Researchers at Oregon State University have recently conducted a study1 suggesting that high fat, high sugar diets reduce our mental and emotional ability to ‘adapt and adjust to changing situations’.
When considering the reasons why a high fat, high sugar diet could lead to reduced cognitive abilities, the scientists discovered a surprising link.
This research supports earlier studies, such as one performed by the ‘Gail and Gerald Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology and Stress’ that linked supplemental probiotics to better cognitive test results and an improved ability to cope with stress. The science behind how our gut microflora affects our mood and cognitive function is still in its infancy, but it is now understood that our gut bacteria release compounds that act similarly to neurotransmitters, and these have an impact on our brain and emotions. Healthcare professionals may be interested to hear that two of the strains of bacteria in our ‘For every day’ product have been shown to reduce anxiety and improve our ability to cope when under stress. Additionally, you can read more about how our gut bacteria affects our mood in general, by reading my earlier blog post on ‘Psychobiotics’ .
So, it seems that there is yet another good reason to look after our gut flora by limiting sugar and fat and taking a high-quality, well researched probiotic supplement. When antibiotics enter the system they naturally destroy some of the body's good bacteria as well as the bad, and this disruption is thought to be the reason for side effects such as diarrhoea or thrush. Doctors used to advise waiting for your antibiotics course to finish before starting a course of probiotics.
Our supplement For those on antibiotics contains two high quality strains of natural bacteria, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52. Take one capsule daily with breakfast*, until antibiotics course is finished, and preferably for one week after. Continue taking until pack is completed and add a second pack if the antibiotic treatment lasts more than one week. The extensive research behind OptiBac Probiotics 'For those on antibiotics' sets it apart from many live cultures supplements on the market today, and makes this supplement a suitable choice for anyone who wishes to take natural bacteria during their course of antibiotics.
Healthcare practitioners can read more about the clinical research on this product when taken alongside antibiotics, or more about our clinical trials across the range.
If you are taking a different probiotic from our range, it is best to wait 1 to 2 hours after your antibiotics before taking the probiotic supplement. However as a general idea, other companies tend to recommend waiting 1 or 2 hours after taking antibiotics before taking your probiotics.
Take probiotics with your antibiotics instead of waiting to finish your course of antibiotics.
If taking 'For those on antibiotics', take it with breakfast, whether or not this coincides with your antibiotics. If taking a different probiotic or live cultures supplement, simply wait 1 or 2 hours after your antibiotics before taking probiotics. If you have already finished a course of antibiotics before being recommended a probiotic, better late than never; by all means take the probiotic now! A revolutionary new way of delivering chemotherapy, 1,000 times stronger than normal, offers hope to women battling ovarian cancer.
A trial of the new technique, known as intraperitoneal chemotherapy, has just been launched across the UK from Barts and The London School of Medicine. Hitting the tumour harder could also reduce its ability to become resistant to chemotherapy drugs, a common problem with ovarian cancer.
The PETROC study, a joint UKCanadian trial, will recruit 150 women newly diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer.
Dr Gallagher said: 'Earlier studies indicate that when given directly the platinum-based drug is about 10 times more concentrated and the paclitaxel is about 1,000 times higher than when given intravenously. During the treatment, a small catheter is inserted into the abdomen during surgery or under local anaesthetic.
Each course of chemotherapy takes around six hours - slightly longer than conventional treatment.
Dr Gallagher hopes this new trial will identify the patients most likely to benefit and resolve any worries about catheters causing pain. Ovarian cancer has been called the 'silent killer', as it is often so advanced by the time it is diagnosed that two out of three women will not survive. Symptoms, which include pelvic and abdominal pain, bloating and difficulty eating, can be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Professor Iain McNeish, a specialist at Barts and The London Hospital, often sees patients who were initially told they had a gastric rather than gynaecological problem.

He does not blame doctors, as most GPs will only ever see three or four cases of ovarian cancer.
But he said: 'For IBS to appear for the first time in a woman in her 50s, or older, is very rare. In most cases, it won't be a tumour, but if it is ovarian cancer, early diagnosis is the key, says Professor McNeish.

Laboratory mice were put through a host of tests such as different mazes and puzzles, to test their mental capabilities whilst following different diets with varying levels of fat and sugar. The mice in the high fat, high sugar diet group were found to have significantly altered gut bacteria as compared to the other dietary groups. Nutritional Therapist, Joanna wrote a fascinating blog post about the research behind this finding, which you can read here.
A healthy gut flora could lift our mood and enhance cognitive function, making you happier and more intelligent!
Many people, when prescribed antibiotics, choose to supplement their natural bacteria with a probiotic.
The theory here is that antibiotics (which by nature kill bacteria) destroy your probiotics as well, so taking them together could be futile.
Furthermore these two strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, have been tested and shown in-vitro to survive stomach acidity and bile salts. If you are taking a probiotic from a different supplier, perhaps a yoghurt or another supplement containing live cultures of natural bacteria, it is best to ask your supplier about timings. After 1 or 2 hours, the antibiotics will have passed through the body, and at this stage it is safe to take a probiotic without worrying about the natural bacteria being destroyed. Please note that packs of 'For those on antibiotics' purchased in the near future from retailers may still have the old recommended use (advising consumers to wait 30 minutes between antibiotics and probiotics). The anti-cancer drugs are put directly into the abdomen, via a catheter, instead of being injected into the bloodstream using an intravenous drip.
It is unusual for it to spread to other parts of the body - in that way, it's different from many other cancers. Because more cancer cells are destroyed in each dose of chemotherapy, there are fewer left with the opportunity to evolve and develop ways of surviving the treatment.
It will compare the effect of identical doses of two conventional chemotherapy drugs - paclitaxel plus either carboplatin or cisplatin, which are both forms of platinum - when given directly into the abdomen or intravenously. Just 4 per cent of women are confident they could spot the signs of the disease, according to a poll carried out last week.

After four weeks, the mice following the high fat, high sugar diet (or the 'junk food' diet) performed significantly worse in all the tests, therefore linking this type of unhealthy diet to lowered brain function. However at OptiBac Probiotics we advise taking a course of probiotics during your antibiotics course, as well as afterwards.
It is still generally recommended to take probiotics every day during your course of antibiotics; this way you can replenish your friendly bacteria on a daily basis, before your digestive system is upset by a longstanding microbial imbalance.

Rest assured this is exactly the same product, and it can safely be taken at breakfast time - whether or not this is at the same time as antibiotics. But Dr Chris Gallagher, who heads the study in the UK, is confident this advance will show an increase in survival of around 20 per cent.

Nisha Patel, a Pharmacist and mum of two girls explains it all…***There are two things I love about being a pharmacist. The thing I enjoy about working with the public is everyone is different and interesting in their own way. I enjoy connecting with people and helping them feel better, whether it’s through helping treat them or just having a little chat and working out what could be the cause of the issue.
As everyone is different, people can suffer from different symptoms and the cause of their issue could vary.
Doing Story Time With Your Kids…When You Can’t Be There How To Turn Old Joggers Into Shorts, Without Measuring or Sewing! Co-owning a natural health website and working in a community hospital on Sundays, I see a varying range of conditions. Many of them, including ones that can be treated over the counter like constipation, IBS, colds and flus and skin conditions like eczema, working out the cause of the issue can take time. Of course there are quick fixes available to provide temporary relief but working out why these issues are happening and treating the route cause is more important. One thing that has really come to light in the past decade is how important certain teeny tiny microbes are in the functioning of the human body. Interestingly, according to the national institute of health, it was found that nearly everyone routinely carries pathogens (disease causing microorganisms). Researchers are trying to figure out why some pathogens turn nasty and under what conditions. It may surprise many to learn that there is approximately 500 to 1000 species of bacteria which live in the human gut alone and there is understood to be a least 10 times as many bacteria as human cells in the body.
I could go on with the crazy bacteria facts like bacteria make up 3lbs of our weight which is the same as our brain, but I’ll stop now. This is probably due to the fact that in the case of vaginal birth, what newborns swallow as they pass through the mother’s birth canal will become their first dose of healthy intestinal microflora. This is nature’s way to arm their babies, providing them with a foundation of healthy bacteria for their future health. These include the following;DietHaving a healthy diet by eating lots of fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty of water. Some of this food can act as prebiotics (bacteria food), which allow bacteria to thrive and grow. Miso, sauerkraut, kefir, Kombucha, Tempeh, Miso soup, Kimchi and yogurt are sources of good bacteria.EnvironmentAn interesting study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that children who grow up on traditional farms are 30%-50% less likely than other children to develop asthma.
This was thought to be because of all the different bacteria and fungi in household dust e.g. They are available in yogurts or food supplements and are also known as “good” or “friendly bacteria”. Also, if you’re put on a course of antibiotics it can deplete the good bacteria and take a while for the gut to restore the fine balance of good bacteria, hence probiotics can speed this process up. Different strains of bacteria are thought to have different effects on the body so it’s important to choose a probiotic that is specific for you and your symptoms. I have compiled a list of my favorite probiotics which are available in our natural health shop. These probiotics are well researched with many of them having undergone clinical trials not only to show efficacy but that they reach the gut alive. Having said all this, no supplement can compensate living a healthy lifestyle so look after yourself and your universe of good bacteria.Nisha is a mum of two girls and a Pharmacist.
