Studies in lab mice have shown that when fed an intensive high fat diet their microbes change dramatically and for the worse. A recent study took a group of Africans who ate a traditional local diet high in beans and vegetables and swapped their diet with a group of African Americans who ate a diet high in fat and animal proteins and low dietary fibre. Surprisingly, no one has specifically investigated the effect of junk food on westerners from the perspective of the microbiome. For the sake of science and research for my book The Diet Myth, I have been experimenting with several unusual diets and recorded their effects on my gut microbes. I wasn’t the ideal subject since I was no longer on an average diet, but Tom, who like most students enjoyed his fast food, was.
Tom started in high spirits and many of his fellow students were jealous of his unlimited junk food budget.
I felt good for three days, then slowly went downhill, I became more lethargic, and by a week my friends thought I had gone a strange grey colour.

Aquatic animal effluent (fish waste) accumulates in water as a byproduct of the keeping them in a closed system or tank (recirculating aquaculture system). Aquaponics is an interesting subject for anyone looking to grow their own plants with the benefit of using fish as the nutrient source.
The fish supply nutrients to the plants that are in a grow bed and the plants clean the water of the nutrients and the water then travels back into the fish tank creating a recirculating system. Aquaponics is suitable for a number of fish such as Barramundi, Bass, Jade Perch, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Murray Cod if you are in Australia all of which are great to eat as well.
So we have established that water is recirculated through the system, and you will need to add a small amount of water to compensate for what is lost by evaporation, and transpiration by the vegetables. There have been over 300 different aquaponic plants that have been tested that will be happy in an aquaponic system. Our aquaponic plants absolutely thrived in the aquaponic system with the water from the fish supplying nutrients directly to the roots of the aquaponic plants.
A trial conducted by Dr Nick Savidov in Canada, found that aquaponic growth rates can exceed hydroponic plant growth by up to four times with some vegetables and herbs. Herbs and green leafy vegetables are the most common aquaponic plants grown in an aquaponics system. Then you have your aquaponic herbs like basil, parsley, watercress, coriander, sage, lemongrass, the list goes on. The Silver Perch is also known as Silvers, Silver Bream, Bidyan, Black Bream, Grunter and Murray perch. The Goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish.
Jade Perch is a hardy, omnivorous species, capable of achieving rapid growth rates on relatively inexpensive diets. Tilapia is the most common fish used in Aquaponics systems around the world (except Australia). The cover for the system does not have to be a solid roof – although that is what we did in one of our systems. No, the pumps are not that loud – however you would not want one outside your bedroom window. Well that depends on how big a system you want to build and what you make the system out of.  We are always being asked how big a system do I need to feed a family of four – the answer is how much does a family of four eat! A system made up of 1x 1,000 litre tank and two 600 litre grow beds will need at least 18 metres square (200 square feet).
So, depends whether you are building a Backyard Aquaponics System or a Commerical Aquaponics System or whether you have an area that is the perfect place and whatever can fit in will work. While most people acknowledge bacteria, usually the nitrifying genera, as being necessary to aquaponics systems there is often little acknowledgement of the true importance of many other species of bacteria and almost no methods are deployed for their management.

Positive Bacteria have four main benefits for areas like fish intestine lining and plant root tissue. Good Bacteria repel the Bad – Good bacteria help promote the health of the fish gut or plant root and actively prevent bad bacteria getting a hold again.
The amount will vary depending on the type of fish, the temperature of the water and the type of food you have. Many people have been very successful in building our aquaponic systems for food production and helping and supplying others with systems. Aquaponics is basically a combination of Aquaculture (growing fish) & Hydroponics (growing plants). The effluent rich water becomes high in plant nutrients but is toxic to the aquatic animal. The plants in turn digest the nutrients, reducing or eliminating the waters toxicity for the aquatic animal. The systems rely on the natural relationship between the aquatic animals and the plants to maintain the environment.
A system can be as small as to have one on your kitchen bench using goldfish and growing herbs. Therefore Aquaponics uses only about 10% of the water required for traditional gardening or fish farming. No chemicals are added or for that matter can be added to the vegetable part of the system as that would cause your fish to die. Compared with Aquaculture, Aquaponics systems do not have a build-up of wastes in the system that causes the water to become toxic due to the nitrites. We have found that the aquaponic plants grow and produce faster in the system than in a traditional garden. The advantage of aquaponics is that, during warm weather the plants get as much water as they need.
We have had great success with the obvious salad varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, shallots, celery, capsicum, chilli, snow peas and red salad onions. What you want out of your system, your climate and available supplies are probably the factors you would need to consider first. It depends on what is available to you, what is legal for you to keep in your location and what will live in your temperature range. There is a little more husbandry in as if you put fingerlings in with more mature barramundi they will think they are dinner. They are illegal in Australia due to their ability to overtake and dominate local waterways. While it is possible to engineer them on sloping ground it adds a degree of complexity and we recommend that you avoid sloping ground as much as possible. You should not rely on running extension cords for long distances across your yard – it is dangerous and prone to failure.
The system should be covered adequately to prevent water from heavy rain flooding it if you are doing a flood and drain system. Yes, you do have to run the system all night long in order to make sure that ammonia does not build up and oxygen levels in the water does not drop. White will block out a small percentage of the light and helps with the aid of the roll up curtain sides keeping the environmnet cooler.
Media based which is the most common design used in backyard systems uses either gravel or clay pebbles. The media used is water and rafts made from styrofoam or a floating board with holes for pots to allow the plants to sit in where the roots are always immersed in the water. This is where the plants are in pots and a small amount of water is trickled through the base of the channel where the roots access the water.
This is obviously  much more energy efficient, and fits in easily with the environmental advantages. Use of a filtration system, adding water additives to neutralise the water or exposing the water to air and sunlight for a few days will all do the trick. For us humans we just put on warmer clothes but for our Barramundi and Jade Perch the cold weather can kill them off. It is designed to not let the temperature drop below 20 degrees so as to keep the fish and the plants happy.
Much is written about this and many people define aquaponics as the “combination of fish and plants”.
Aquaponicists will often talk about nitrifying bacteria and while there are several genera of bacteria that will oxidise Ammonia to Nitrite and Nitrite to Nitrate the most common genus mentioned is Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter respectively. They can aid in breakdown of organic material that may get on the surface as well as actively assisting tissue health. Many positive bacteria do not only prevent bad bacteria taking hold but actively antagonize bad bacteria so they are removed from the environment.
Many positive bacteria are major contributors to break down of nutrients that can be readily absorbed by they tissue. If you can not do that or you get a very high reading of Ammonia or Nitrite then we suggest you release about one-third of your water and top up your system up again.
The general rule in warm weather with commercial fish food is about 3% of their body weight when they are small fingerlings and about 1% of their body weight once they are no longer fingerlings.

So long as you do not overstock with fish and keep monitoring your system for pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. Nitrate is not as toxic to fish and the plants can use it to produce protien and nucleic acids.
Basically there are Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) that convert Ammonia into Nitrite in the presence of oxygen for energy.

My son Tom, a final year student of genetics at the University of Aberystwyth suggested an additional crucial experiment: to track the microbes as they changed from an average western diet to an intensive fast food diet for over a week. I felt really unwell, but definitely had no addictive withdrawal symptoms and when I finally finished, I rushed (uncharacteristically) to the shops to get some salad and fruit. Water is only added to replace water loss from absorption by the plants or evaporation into the air. The grow bed can be filled with gravel (flood and drain), clay pebbles or water (continuous flow). Aquaponics is the future of home gardening and commercial fresh food production for any country. Garden pests can be kept to a minimum by housing the system in a green house or by using non toxic methods. Aquaponics utilises this waste, with the bacteria in the grow beds converting the nitrites into nitrates, which the plants then consume as their main nutrient source. Basically the aquaponics plant list is too long to write and is dependent on your location. Climate is another important factor as is whether your aquaponic system is open to the elements or in a green house.
Aquaponic Vegetables like, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, beans, egg plant and all the choys for stir fries. You can use goldfish if you do not want to have edible fish, or outside of Australia Tilipia or catfish. In our continuous flow system it has no cover and the rain does a great job in filling up the tank. A 1,000 litre (264 US Gallons) tank in your aquaponics system will support between 50 and 80 fish.
With the commercial systems an electric winch would be recommended which can even be connected to an automatic controller to adjust the curtains based on the internal temperature. Ensuring your fish tank is lower than your grow beds in your design will ensure that only one pump is required and that is in the fish tank.
Keeping the temperature at the right level for your type of fish is important to avoid losses. Hence, getting the tanks to have stable water temperature and not to drop into the deadly temperature range has been our focus over the last few weeks. The fact is that there is a third, and equally important, group whose management is often completely ignored: bacteria! If you have tested it and the Ammonia and Nitrite are not too high then stop feeding the fish for a couple of days. Garlic spray can be used as a repellent and to kill caterpillars if you do not want to use Bt. A teaspoon of Chelated Iron mixed in a bucket of water and added slowly into your grow beds should do the trick. We have had systems with pH levels just over 8 when they started and they all went down over time. This, along with low incomes and a misguided preference for expensive exotic foods, has contributed significantly to health problems. Until recently we have viewed them as harmful – but those (like salmonella) are a tiny minority and most are essential for us.
Tests of both groups showed very different microbiomes, the populations of microbes in their guts.
The amount of useful compounds in soy depends on the type of plant and degree of processing.
Flaxseed contains soluble fiber and alpha-linoleic acids which are useful compounds in a phytoestrogen source.
These are useful if you are not eating large amounts of the food sources of phytoestrogens.
An Aquaponics system is made up of a tank containing the fish, and one or more grow beds for vegetable production.
The fish water feeds the plants of which there is a huge range to choose from to plant such as  tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and green leafy vegetables, the water then returns to the fish tank preferably by gravity.
If it is an above ground plant that grows well in your area and does not mind getting its roots wet then you should give it a go. Plants in an aquaponic system are continuously being watered constantly through the continuous flow or flood and drain system. That will support between 1,200 (317 US Gallons) and 1,800 litres (475 US Gallons) of grow beds taken that the grow beds are about 300 millimeter (12 inches) deep. If you are in a high insect area you may need to consider an air lock system to bugs at bay. Gravel is used in the flood and drain system where the grow beds are flooded and drained periodically allowing water to circulate through the system on a regular basis. The water can then be pumped from the fish tank into the grow beds and then the use of gravity to allow the water to flow back into the fish tank.  Remember it is a recirculating system so it makes sense to make it simple and easy. Testing the water is the perfect way to understand and see how your system is performing.  Testing for ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are the most important one. Then Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) convert Nitrite to Nitrate in the presence of oxygen for engergy. Loss of diversity is a universal signal of ill health in the guts of obese and diabetic people and triggers a range of immunity problems in lab mice.
The water that is returned to the fish tank is clean and ready for use by the fish, and so the cycle continues.
It will accommodate between 2,400 litres (634 US Gallons) and 3,600 litres (950 US Gallons) of grow beds. For ph the optimal range is between 7 and 7.5 for fish, plants and bacteria in an aquaponics system.
After either of the above review how much you are feeding your fish as you are probably overfeeding them. The most common mentioned NOB is Nitrobacter however some modern studies suggest that Nitrospira is perhaps a more important NOB. He would collect poo samples before, during and after his diet and send them to three different labs to check consistency. Check what is available at what time of the year to make sure you can get supplies when required.
A system made up of 1x 2,000 litre tank and four 600 litre grow beds will need at least 32 square metres (338 square feet).
For bigger and commercial systems air diffusers are used to create bubbles thereby creating oxygen.
Tilapia are easy to breed, taste good, grows fast to about 300g in 8 months in hot areas, can withstand poor water conditions but require warm water.
Try to keep good records as this gives you an indication on how your system has been working.
As the Nitrite levels increase the Nitrite-oxidizing-bacteria (NOB) will begin to multiply in the system and the Nitrate level will start to increase. NOB are equally slow growing bacteria and it will typically take a week and half to two weeks before the Nitrite level will peak and then start to decrease. Nitrite levels should continue to drop over the next few weeks until it remains at a low level.
