I always keep my bread in the freezer since I don’t eat it very often and I know that it will stay fresh while frozen. I don’t eat bread all that often but every once in a while I get on an avocado on toast kick. To satisfy my sweet tooth without going too crazy (AKA running across the street to Krispey Kreme– fat bomb, much?), I decided to make my favorite dessert-like smoothie. To make this smoothie, I used 1 frozen banana + 1 fresh one, a single serve Silk dark chocolate almond milk and a tablespoon of Barney Butter almond butter.
When I buy bananas, I like to buy more than I will likely use for the week and when they are perfectly ripe, I’ll cut up a few and freeze them in individual baggies. I only used one frozen banana because I only had one left in the freezer this morning, but I actually really liked the consistency I ended up with. Another item I like to keep on hand for my chocolate cravings is a pack of single serve chocolate almond milks. 2 bananas provide you with healthy carbs and potassium (great for replenishing your body after a workout!) And contain about 100 calories each, helping to make this a sustaining meal! Chocolate almond milk contains just 120 calories with 2 grams of protein, healthy fats, fiber and is also a great source of calcium.
Almond butter packs in additional protein and healthy fats and 1 tablespoon is just 90 calories. This smoothie in total clocks in at around 400 calories making it a substantial breakfast that kept me full for a few hours. There are many fermented beverages (aside from beer and wine!) that are also rich in probiotics!
A few varieties do have a slightly higher alcohol content than others and it is now regulated where you have to be 21 or older to purchase some of them.
You’ve probably seen a few different commercials touting the benefits consuming probiotics from Activia yogurt ads to the TruBiotics supplements that are endorsed by Erin Andrews. Lifestyle factors such as unhealthy food choices, stress, lack of sleep, antibiotic overuse, and other poor habits can all alter the balance in favor of the bad bacteria.
When the bacteria in your digestive tract is unbalanced with too much of the bad bacteria, your immune system is compromised leaving you more susceptible to getting sick. So overall, you want to do what you can to keep the healthy microflora well supplied and by adding a few (kinda weird?) foods to your diet, you can do just that! While eating raw vegetables are amazing for you, it’s also a great idea to add a few fermented ones into your diet too!

It was such a relaxing trip: we went out to eat, watched the final game of the world cup while drinking Moscow Mules, I watched Grady play drunk-tennis with his friend, and got in an awesome hike!

I met up with a couple of friends who I’ve gotten to know recently through the Bloguettes community (more on that in a sec!) and we had so much fun. These awesome girls set up tons of fun events from happy hours to mini-workshops (I went to 2 this week!) that are so much fun.
And if you’ve abandoned bread in an effort to cut refined carbs from you diet (good for you!), you can now rest easy knowing that you have a perfectly reasonable option. This way, I always have a couple frozen ones on hand to toss into a smoothie or make the ever-popular “frozen ‘nana ‘nice’-cream”. Feel free to use 2 frozen ones or 2 fresh ones with ice (or even just 1 lonely banana by itself) if you prefer!
I buy these in single servings because I don’t really drink them that often and when I would buy a bigger carton I would end up throwing a lot of it away.

You have yourself a sweet, chocolatey breakfast or post-workout drink that tastes like candy but is actually packed with healthy ingredients! Several types of Kombucha can be found in stores as well as other types of probiotic drinks. Even the highest percentage ones still have less than half a percent of alcohol though, so you’d probably have to drink a case of them to get a buzz. I’ve considered giving this a try but I’m SUPER weird about my foods getting contaminated with bacteria or mold. These are a bit lighter and sweeter than the kombucha because they are fermented from coconut water rather than black tea. But what are probiotics and do you really need to be taking pills or downing gross cups of yogurt in order to reap the benefits? When the digestive tract is healthy, it filters out nasty toxins, chemicals, and other unwanted waste. When veggies are fermented, they are left to sit and steep until their sugars and carbs become bacteria-boosting agents. I found it at my local Whole Foods and have been adding it to my meals and even eating it by itself.
There are so many outdoorsy activities there so it’s a perfect place to visit when you can use a little fresh air. I have met some of the sweetest girls through these events and love being surrounded by other positive, creative types. I spread some almond butter on my bread and then top each slice with fruits or other toppings.
Despite the expiration date on most nut milks seeming like they will keep for months, they do not. Looking forward to visiting with his family as well as escaping this Scottsdale heat for a couple days!

I remember one day my Mom stopped in to visit or bring me lunch, and she brought in one of the GT’s Kombucha drinks. I totally realize that is the point of Kombucha but I just don’t think I could trust my own recipe and be brave enough to drink it haha. They also don’t have the same bitter, slightly alcoholic taste that traditional kombucha tends to have so if you’ve tried kombucha and weren’t a fan, this is a great choice! It also absorbs and helps deliver nutrients from food and water to the cells where they are needed.
This time of year, I’m always on the lookout for alternatives to my outdoor workouts and last Wednesday I found a new class that I am totally in love with. It is naturally carbonated and has a slightly bitter flavor but it doesn’t taste bad at all! I opened it and took a sip and I immediately accused her of giving me alcohol while I was at work! Once you open it, it needs to be refrigerated and used up within 10 days, just like dairy milk. This is the culture of bacteria, which is often referred to as the ‘mother’ or SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts).
Although buying single serving sizes might cost a little more, (I think it’s usually around $5 for a 4-pack), it’s worth it to me to not worry about how quickly they will go bad!
7+ years ago, they didn’t regulate the trace alcohol content as closely as they do now, so my Mom had no idea.
I usually pour my Kombucha into a glass because I am weirded out by that part LOL but you can drink it.
I have a really irrational paranoia that I might accidentally poison myself if I try to make it. I think she was a little mortified at first, but we read the fine print of the label and realized it wasn’t going to get me drunk. I swear though, after that first sip, I legitimately thought she had brought me a wine cooler by mistake.
