Basically, the tight junctions of your gut (intestinal) lining separate and create “holes” that allow food particles and toxins to pass easily through. Those food particles and toxins then pass into your bloodstream which can wreak total havoc on your body causing food intolerances, sugar cravings, weight gain, diarrhea, constipation, hormonal imbalances and even autoimmune disease. The truth is that in our antibiotic-obsessed world, where GMOs and chronic stress run rampant, leaky gut is not an uncommon issue. A 2013 study in Denmark demonstrated that people with low bacterial diversity suffered significantly more weight gain over 9 years, and had diminished insulin sensitivity plus high levels of inflammation compared to those who had high bacterial gut diversity. Studies in mice have shown that simply transplanting different bacteria can affect fat accumulation as much as 57% over 14 days! The gut is often called the “second brain.” Think about it – when you feel nervous, you may get “butterflies” in your stomach.
Probiotic supplementation has also been linked to a reduction in acne, yeast infections, UTIs, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (including arthritis, colitis and Crohn’s Disease), decreased risk of intestinal cancers, leaky gut syndrome, allergies…the list goes on and on. The first thing I tell all my patients to do when trying to heal their gut is to eliminate grains, sugar, and dairy from their diet.
It’s also important to address other lifestyle factors that can contribute to leaky gut, such as stress, lack of sleep and overtraining. Sometimes, extra supplements like L-glutamine, zinc, probiotics, digestive enzymes or even herbal antimicrobials in the case of a severe case of gut dysbiosis (gut flora imbalance), can be really helpful too, but gut healing always starts with real food.
