When we eat too many carbohydrates and not enough non-starchy veggies, this can contribute to digestive pain and swollen joints the next day.
For those of us trying to watch our waistline and our health while still enjoying the holidays, it takes more than sheer willpower to overcome this pressure to overeat. When we eat sweet and sugary foods, or when we eat too many carbohydrates and not enough non-starchy veggies, this can also contribute to digestive pain and swollen joints the next day. Food toxins and allergens, parasites, bacterial overgrowth, and the daily stress of living can all take their toll on the digestive system. Based on the results of an NIH study, University of Missouri dietitians recommend sticking to a healthy diet and exercise plan year-round, considering that the average one pound holiday weight gain may never come off. Digestive enzymes, like Assist Full Spectrum or Assist Dairy & Protein, can keep food moving along if you find that you have eaten beyond your capacity to digest.
Bring your own dish to a Thanksgiving potluck — healthy alternatives like Body Ecology-friendly roasted turkey, Dijon roasted Brussels sprouts, and roasted garlic mashed cauliflower taste as good (or better) than the real thing.
Even the act of feasting, if done consciously, can deeply nourish the body rather than give you heartburn and gas. Eat only until you are 80 percent full, and remember to eat 80 percent non-starchy vegetables and seaweeds at every meal. Skip dessert and enjoy a naturally sweet fruit like berries, best eaten alone or with a glass of Passion Fruit Biotic, or use zero-calorie Stevia or Lakanto as a healthy sugar substitute. Having digestive enzymes and fermented foods on hand this Thanksgiving will help to soothe your digestion so that you can truly enjoy the time you spend with family and friends. And when you can't beat 'em, join 'em — bring your own nourishing Body Ecology holiday dish to have a healthy feast without sacrificing flavor. Plus, Monk Fruit extract does not elevate blood sugar or insulin, making it a perfect sweetener for maintaining health blood sugar levels and weight management.
If she doesn't respond, I'd say you can go to Whole Foods Market and buy a big bottle of apple cider vinegar and poor it over your vegie salad.
Celiac and the BeastI'm just a gluten-free girl trying to survive in a world full of wheat.
If you know my background, you know that my stomach has had a hard time digesting things for a while now. If you’re still having a hard time understanding what enzymes do, please read their FAQ online.
The digest pills from Enzymedica do not contain egg, dairy, preservatives, salt sucrose, soy, wheat, yeast, nuts, corn, gluten, casein, potato, rice or artificial colors or flavors! Thank you SO much for Enzymedica for being a paid sponsor for #CDAM15 and hooking me up with the only enzymes I use!
Recently I started following the low fodmap diet and realized that foods like cauliflower, beets, and mango cause me trouble.
I really can’t pinpoint it but even though I am faithfully gluten free, it sometimes feels that I am not.
The biggest problems occur when I’m traveling and eating out frequently or staying with family. I have the most trouble eating out when it comes to gluten-I would never knowingly cheat…cross contamination is always a risk at a restaurant! The only time we ever think about our digestive tract is when we are hungry or if we are sick and have a€?tummy troublesa€™. Did you know that on average, salivary glands produce almost 1.5 liters of saliva every day? When you chew something, it turns into a small round slurry mass that is produced to help you swallow.
Once food that is in the condition of a€?bolusa€™ is swallowed, it travels down through the esophagus and into the stomach. When food enters the esophagus, it begins to tighten and then relax in what has been called a a€?wave-likea€™ process. A disorder called a€?Acid Refluxa€™ allows a buildup of the stomach acids that actually push the food and the acids back up into the esophagus. Once the food has entered into the stomach, there are enzymes that are called a€?proteasesa€™ that being the process of breaking down the proteins and getting it ready to send to the small intestines. It doesn’t matter how many times we reapply the sunblock, sometimes you just get burned! Last weekend after a lovely long day at the beach, I came home with one of those brutal blistery burns. For more relief, apply aloe all over your skin after the bath and be sure to drink loads of H2O!
When attempting this challenge, do what feels best to you; the last thing I want is for this to feel like another checklist to get done.
One thing that stuck out to me—and I can 100% attest to this, as I mentioned in this post—is that tea drinkers tend to have an easier time falling and staying asleep. At the end of the day, both options have loads of benefits if you aren’t over-doing it (like drinking 5+ cups a day) and some downsides.
I personally will be sticking to tea, but will never pass up a cup of Joe during a leisurely weekend brunch! I was clinging onto childhood and college friendships because it was who I was used to spending my time with. You’re not always going to be into the same things as people you once shared all your secrets with. I found that investing my time in fewer, more authentic relationships as opposed to a bunch of somewhat fake acquaintances—even when there was no bad blood—made me feel more at ease. I still sometimes feel bummed when I think of a friend who I’m no longer close with, but I try to remember that we’re both doing what makes us uniquely happy. I challenge you to swap out any toxic-filled products that you use daily for cleaner versions. The post Weekly Wellness Challenge: Toxin Elimination, Bathroom Edition appeared first on because im addicted. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ll kill it one week, then have a period where the only thing I can concentrate on is everything BUT work or my to-do list.
I found the Pomodoro technique through some Internet browsing and have since become obsessed with it!
During the 25-minute focus time you need to turn off distractions—think email, iMessage, phone upside down—and use that time to get stuff done. I’ve been marking off how many sessions I can do in a day and it’s become a little addictive—but in a good way. This technique isn’t only for work stuff either; use it for chores or basically anything you don’t have the drive for but need to complete. My grandmother loved to joke about how silly (read: stupid!) it was that her and her girlfriends would lay out in the sun for hours with reflectors in hand, bodies doused in baby oil. I encourage you to stop for a minute and take inventory of the ingredients in the beauty products in your beauty cabinet.
We live in a world where beauty isn’t heavily regulated which leaves us, the trusted consumers, with faces, bodies, and nails lined with harsh chemicals. Made in France, these lipsticks are made with pomegranate oil and shea butter, and are colored from fruit pigments leaving them super moisturizing. The line is free of parabens, phthalates, and sulfates, and is made of key ingredients such as green tea, rosehip, and grape seed oil.
The post Non-toxic Beauty Products: Lipstick Edition appeared first on because im addicted. When setting intentions, I like to focus on something I’ve not been feeling good about—which I got clarity about with the first challenge (if you missed that one, answer those questions for a day or two first). Keep a notepad on your phone or one written by your bed (my preference), and set your intentions. If you’re comfortable sharing, please comment with your intention(s), or let me know how you’re doing with this!
I’m sure you’ve noticed the shift here—and on my social accounts for that matter—as a lot of the content has been heavily wellness-related.
Each Monday, I’ll propose a new challenge for the week, all targeted at—you guessed it!—wellness.
There will be helpful resources—checklists, questions, etc.—included when relevant because I want to make it a seamless transition to incorporating a life well lived. So with that being said, we’re going to start this up RIGHT NOW because there’s no time like the present! What I’d love from you this first week is to truly be aware and mindful of how you’re living your days, and where you struggle to feel good. If you’re reading my blog you probably know that I’m constantly trying to add healthy and clean habits into my life.

For that reason, I’ve made carrying a durable bottle with me a must since half the struggle of getting enough h2O is the access. Keeping a bottle with me at all times has been life-changing in terms of water consumption, and I’m noticing a change in my skin and how I feel. Social media started out great for me; it provided inspiration, communication, and was a fun way to pass time.
I’ll think about a potential post or photo more than focusing on who I’m with or what I’m doing. I was iPhone-snapping during an unreal sunset recently, and when I finally looked up beyond my screen, the sun was set. While I love to see what my friends are doing or to share my most beautiful acai bowls, social media pressures shouldn’t be hijacking my mind.
So how can we get back to the point where social media is simply a second thought or pleasure and not an obligation or obsession? It feels like just yesterday when I sat down on a chilly December day to write down my 2016 goals, and now as we’re in the blazing heat of July, half of the year is behind us. As we enter into the second half of the year (July 1st is technically the 182nd day), I like to spend some time revisiting the goals I set back in December. The food is then sent to the proventriculus where it mixes with enzymes that begin the digestive process. The gizzard is a specialized part of the digestive tract that is constructed of thick muscular walls where food is ground up. The ground up food and digestive juices then move to the small intestine where they are absorbed.
There are two different types of grit sold in the feed store and it's important to buy the right type. Naturally, we use the BriteTap chicken waterer since it provides a constant source of drinking water free from contamination by dirt and droppings. In this article will cover the top 5 things you need to do to successfully introduce new chicks to your existing flock. What Are Probiotics  Probiotics are foods or dietary supplements that contain live bacteria. Do yourself a favor this Thanksgiving: Keep Assist Full Spectrum digestive enzymes on hand and practice Body Ecology principles so you can enjoy your meal without overindulging. Most of us see Thanksgiving as a time to loosen our belts and eat as much as we can — it is a holiday, after all. When this happens, oftentimes food doesn’t move quickly enough through the intestines, and it ferments. This foundational Body Ecology principle encourages you to only eat until you are 80 percent full to support your body's natural digestive process. Food combining can be your best friend at a crowded Thanksgiving feast with plenty of options.
When eating sweets, choose something naturally sweet, like berries, and eat these alone or with a glass of probiotic, like Body Ecology Passion Fruit Biotic.
It can be a time of family and togetherness to eat mindfully and focus on what you are truly thankful for.
If food doesn't move quickly enough through the intestines, it will ferment and feed pathogenic bacteria to cause gas, constipation, or even diarrhea. Unlike most fruits, whose sweetness comes from fructose, Monk Fruit’s sweetness comes from natural mogrosides that are 300 times sweeter than sugar. Exercise counteracts the effects of short-term overfeeding and reduced physical activity independent of energy imbalance in healthy young men. With gastroparesis, food tends to sit in my stomach when my vagus nerve is lazy and decides not to churn and digest food easily. From Enzymedica, “A powerful enzyme product may be helpful for individuals with digestive complaints.
They will send one lucky winner a some amazing enzymes that will help ease your digestive distress! The actual physical part of breaking down the larger pieces of food into smaller pieces when we chew is called a€?mechanical digestiona€™. While the first job is to moisten the food so that it helps in the mechanical digestion and swallowing, it also contains enzymes that kick start the chemical digestion of those foods that contain starches.
It is part of the pharynx and automatically closes when you swallow so that food doesna€™t go down your windpipe (trachea).
The official name for the process is call a€?peristalsisa€™ (pear-eh-stal-sis) and this pushes the food down the small tube.
The saliva that is present, called a€?amylasesa€™, breaks down the carbohydrates and a chemical called a€?lipasesa€™ breaks down the fats that you have consumed. It is stretchy and, if a part of the stomach is removed, it will slowly grow and stretch itself back to almost a normal condition.
The purpose of this is to kill bacteria and, working with proteases enzymes, it helps to digest the food. A stomach ulcer occurs when there is part of the mucus missing and the hydrochloric acid begins to eat away at the stomach.
This is called borborygmi and are caused by the peristalsis or wave-like muscle contractions at the walls of the small intestines and the stomach. I moped around, so upset with myself for letting this happen, and searched for relief everywhere I could: aloe, cool compresses, Vitamin E, milk, you name it, I did it. Special thanks to those who left additional ideas for product swaps—I’m definitely going to swoop some of those up! That way, I’m promoting circulation, detoxing, and stepping into the water with exfoliated skin and open pores.
Make this time whatever you need it to be—I simply challenge you to take advantage of this daily, mundane task! Pretty sure it stemmed from a serious coffee overload that left me feeling anxious and blah all day.
Most of the studies back up those claims when people are drinking 2-4 cups a day and not more, FYI.
And while these topics are well documented in advice columns and we know that Sex & the City and a #revengebody help mend, the conversation surrounding breaking up with friends is fairly muted. I was hanging out with friends who were into different things than me just because it was comfortable. Most importantly, I had to realize that just like relationships with love interests, friends fall out of love too—and that’s OK! We all evolve, and it’s important to touch base with yourself and make sure you’re spending time in relationships that feel natural and leave you feeling happy.
No longer did I have the guilt when I bailed on people I didn’t want to hang with, or the weight of having to reach out just to stay in touch.
I’m hoping that as I continue to mature, I’m able to feel even more confident in leaving friendships that aren’t right anymore. Take an hour this week to go through all of your products in the medicine cabinet and shower. Lucky for you, I’ve done LOTS of testing, and most of this stuff is available online. I actually use this specific planner which isn’t necessary, but it’s nice to have especially for us Type A’s.
Do your products have ingredients such as petrolatum, phenoxyethanol, polyacrylamide, parabans, dioxane, benzophenone, coal tar, ethanolamine compounds, homosalate, and more from this list? Set an alarm if you need help remembering (I personally do it daily in the shower), and put aside a few minutes to think about what to focus on for that time period. Like I said before, there’s not always a clear outcome with an intention, and it’s not always a change you can notice for a while. Remember, setting them is a time when you can decide how you want to feel or react or think or channel your energy to work toward an intention.
It’s OK that it’s not the 1st of the month either, this does NOT need to be based on a strict timetable. It’s the weekend and typically a happy day, but the thought of Monday starts lingering by late afternoon.
Depending on the condition of my hair that week, I’ll use a deep conditioner if I’ve used a lot of heat, or a clarifying shampoo if I’ve gone heavy on the dry shampoo and need to remove build-up. Sundays tend to have the most downtime, so I take advantage of the extra minutes and focus on my skin. I like to save this for last since it’s not exactly pampering, but I enjoy doing it to get my brain in check for what’s to come. Think everything from workin’ on that fitness, to detoxing from certain food groups, to essential oils. The comment section can also be utilized as a community to share how you’re doing with the challenge and to check in on others’ experiences. We’ll start with something that will help you get in the mindset to really dive into the challenges to come.

I’d LOVE to hear any answers to the questions, and I want these challenges to feel communal. I’ve been loving the bottles from bobble because they limit the waste of plastic and are something that I can use for years. The stainless steel keeps my water cold for up to 24 hours, and it provides the excuse of water breaks during my workouts…often. It literally nags at me until I find myself speed-scrolling through Instagram, then Snapchat, then Facebook, all while brushing my teeth and trying to accomplish a calm start to my day. I waste my limited downtime trying to either get through a feed of hundreds of people—many of them strangers—or get likes from those following me—also some strangers.
It’s never more important than witnessing a sunset or putting my phone away to enjoy time with people I love—even when I’m at the most adorable coffee shop Instagram has ever seen.
Commercial crumbles and pellets are already ground up finely enough that grit isn't required. Crumble and pellets are already ground fine enough that chicken's don't need grit to digest them.
In this article we've been discussing the insoluble type (not digested and of no nutritional value). Even free-ranging birds who eat a diet of seeds, insects and vegetable matter will not get enough water from their diet alone to properly digest their food.
This may be the reason that Thanksgiving ranks as America's second favorite holiday, right after Christmas. When researchers weighed in on how overeating on a holiday can affect the body, the consensus was clear: Overindulging through the holiday season can contribute to weight gain and compromise health. Drinking a probiotic or eating fermented foods, both rich in beneficial bacteria, can naturally curb a craving for sweets.
You may find that these simple moments of gratitude actually take away your desire to eat more than you can handle during family festivities. Overeating sugary foods and carbohydrates can cause digestive problems and contribute to swollen joints. Now, we know from celiac research that there is no enzyme on the market that breaks down gluten to be safe for celiac disease – so this is NOT what this is for. Also, note that Enzymedica makes other products as well – like multi-vitamins and probiotics that also contain their superior enzymes.
The enzymes that our bodies use to break the food down to even tinier pieces and then into molecules is called a€?chemical digestiona€™. You’re in there daily and it’s how you start or end each day—the ideal time to reset and get a little wellness in. Starting (or ending) my day like that leaves me in such a peaceful mindset with a healthy dose of wellness. After that, I found myself reaching for breakfast tea instead of my usual espresso in the a.m. If you need the extra alertness in the morning, coffee probably suits you better, but if you’re naturally a morning person and would rather fall asleep faster, take the tea. And though it can be overwhelming, we can limit the amount we allow in our homes and on our bodies as much as possible. As my focus started to linger more and more, I started looking for ways to be effective even during my productivity slumps. If the answer is yes, those are all really, really bad, and you may want to spend time researching then cleansing your cabinet. And the sad part is, even though we know these products—especially some of our most favorite luxury goods—are bad, many of us (again, myself included) continue using them because we want to look beautiful, and the clean lines aren’t quite there yet. I definitely found myself not always taking time to decompress, so I’m going to keep working at that.
To combat the Sunday blues or scaries as some people call them, I’ve started using Sundays as basically a self-care and prep day.
I note any tasks I have to get done and also try to schedule in my workouts…and happy hours. To match the passion and lifestyle behind the updated BIA attitude, there will be new series I’m super duper excited about: the weekly Wellness Challenge! I want this challenge to be something that kick-starts your week in a way that has lasting positive results. Consuming enough water is a serious commitment and one that I’ve previously fallen short on. I wanted one to carry around the house and city, but also one for my gym bag, so I chose two: bobble Infuse and bobble Insulate. I’ve been experimenting with recipes to infuse which is a breeze because you literally add the ingredients to the bottle and bounce.
By planning a set “break time” for social media, I’ll have something to look forward to but also structure.
I also use this time to write new goals, or as I like to call them mid-year resolutions, as SO much has happened over the last six months. If you didn’t write anything out, jot down what you want to focus on for the second half of the year. They need grit because chicken's don't have teeth and are not able to chew their food to aid digestion.
Too small and the grit will pass through the chickens digestive system without doing its job. The gluten enzyme is used for those that have non-celiac gluten intolerance or have trouble with gluten – NOT for celiacs to go out and cheat.
The main purpose is the break down the food that we eat into tiny pieces so that the body can absorb the nutrients. It sounds louder when your stomach is empty because there isna€™t any food to muffle the sounds. I definitely noticed a drop in alertness, as drinking my normal 2 cups of tea wasn’t providing the same rush of (welcomed!) java energy.
Even though I was going through so much personal change and figuring out who I wanted to be in life, my circle of friends didn’t evolve.
You can play with any time variables you’d like, but I’ve been using the 25-5 method: 25 minutes of zoning in, 5 minutes of whatever you want (breaks are supposed to be free of technology). I also organize it with my computer, planner, etc., so that it’s one less thing to worry about come Monday.
I’m pumped about the content I have coming and hope you find the challenges inspiring, approachable, and most importantly, really good feeling! For example, if a lot of people are having trouble finding ways to decompress, I’ll be sure to work that into a challenge. Right now I’m into blueberries + lemon to refresh, watermelon + lime + lemon to detox, and strawberry or apricots for a dose of fiber.
The bottle was ideal for tea in the winter too since it kept it warm for up to 12 hours, throughout my morning routine.
Some of these goals are lofty, some are minutia, some are about business, and many are personal, but no matter the size or regard, no goal is a bad goal. This little practice can be started at any moment with any date range, so don’t feel like you have to stick to a certain date to start improving your life.
The gizzard squeezes against the food particles and rubs them against each other and any grit contained in the gizzard. You can also apply this rule to Thanksgiving dinner — fill 80 percent of your plate with non-starchy veggies and seaweeds and the remaining 20 percent with an animal protein, Body Ecology grain-like seeds, or starchy vegetables.
Now that we have that cleared up, I always recommend for celiacs to take a spectrum of enzymes just in case they are exposed to gluten – we know that is inevitable if you step foot outside your home. And when I did decide to move on from certain friendships, how was I supposed to handle that type of breakup?
If you stick with it, I promise this habit will bring you one step closer to wherever it is that you want to be in life. Sometimes, these same gases can even contribute to either bouts of constipation or diarrhea.
Thera-blend is an exclusive process that combines multiple strains of enzymes that work in various pH levels. Last, I put on moisturizing body wash and lightly massage my face with cleanser if I have dirty skin. Dairy tends to give me more gastrointestinal distress than anything else, and I take several Digest pills after I sneak some dairy-full icing on a cupcake.
