This is a small laid-back village which has become increasingly popular with visitors in recent years. Pemuteran is home to the largest artificial Biorock reef project in the world and there is a real spirit of marine conservation effort in this area. Sculpted into fantastic shapes and figures have been placed in the bay and the order ones are now covered in beautiful hard coral. Let us know how many days you want to dive and we'll get back to you with a suggested itinerary or dive plan and online booking information. Gili Trawangan: the little island off the coast of Lombok was high on our must-see list thanks to its scuba diving scene and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a course on coral reef restoration. The day before flying to Bali from Kuala Lumpur, we found out via the dive centre’s website that they had switched the course dates without notifying us. We located Trawangan Dive Centre without any difficulty (after all, the island is tiny), and joined the BioRock Reef Restoration course the following day.
Our course instructor, Delphine of the Gili Eco Trust, spearheaded the BioRock project (among many other things) in the Gilis, and as a result of her work, the islands are home to dozens of artificial reefs.
We were tasked with plucking coral-eating drupella snails from the branching corals, scrubbing purple sponge—the “weed” of the underwater world—off of the structures, and attaching new coral fragments to bare spots with zip ties.
The bulk of the course focused on our ability to correctly identify different types of marine life and environmental features.
During the exams, I squinted at and squirmed over the slides on the screen, scribbling down my best guesses and muttering worriedly to myself. Coral gardening and Reef Check successfully conquered, our class’ next and final task was to build and sink our own BioRock artificial reef. Delphine provided us with 10 pieces of rebar and a few quick demos on how to cut and bend it before setting us free to create and build. A local guy did the welding the next morning; those of us brave enough got to have a go at welding, too. Friday morning, we hoisted our creation onto the bow of the Liana, its pincers resting precariously on the outriggers. The lot of us quickly scattered to look for coral fragments, and over the next hour, we coral gardened our little hearts out on the crab. I got my first taste of Gili T’s ripping currents at Shark Point, and I have to say: all that diving in calm, current-less Utila has spoiled me rotten. Once on the boat, I reflected on my diving experiences so far, and concluded (with a laugh) that learning to dive in the Caribbean has made me soft. It doesn’t matter how hard something is, they find a way to do it, because it’s the right thing to do; working to save and restore the environment always is. The BioRock Reef Restoration course runs a few times each year through Trawangan Dive Centre. There are a number of waterfront resorts and its proximity to Lovina and West Bali National Park together with the extreme natural beauty of the area, has fuelled quite rapid growth in tourism infrastructure in the area. Diver can watch the staff of Karang Lestari at work, maintaining the structures and even make donation and have their name made out of wire and added to a structure along with a baby coral colony. Getting there should have been straightforward—after all, we’d been planning for months; but, as we’ve learned, sometimes things don’t go smoothly despite our very best efforts. Upon dragging our scuba gear up the jetty, we entered a wonderland of bicycles and horse-drawn buggies (tuk-tuks and motorized vehicles aren’t allowed on the island). After a whirlwind introduction to coral gardening, we found ourselves in the water diving on some of Gili T’s fabulous BioRock structures. The electricity reacts with minerals in the salt water, causing them to precipitate and adhere to the metal structure.
Our first look at the structures along the underwater slopes of Gili T was amazing—it was clear the effect that the BioRocks were having on the local marine environment. Armed with gardening gloves, we carefully picked through the rubble and algae on the bottom to find healthy coral pieces that had become detached from the reef. Handily built into the two-week BioRock course, this certification would allow us, in the words of Reef Check, to “work with reef surveying teams using globally standardized scientific protocol to record data on several aspects of a coral reef’s health.” Ooooh. Fish were OK, though there are a few types of snapper and sweetlips that look a lot like each other, and by the end of the course, they all started to blur together in my mind. In the end, I aced the fish and invertebrate exam and passed the substrate one, too… though I cut it a bit close. Our instructor deployed a line, creating the transect, and we broke into teams to tackle different aspects of the reef.
I’ll admit that I passed on it—I was wetsuit-clad and sopping wet when the opportunity presented itself.
Once at our destination a few dozen metres off the shore of Gili T, the crew onboard worked together to slowly lower the giant rebar crab overboard and into our hands. We found branching corals, boulder corals, soft corals… everything was zip-tied to the rebar with care and much enthusiasm. Our dive plan involved getting to the 28-metre bottom as quickly as possible, grabbing onto rocks, and pulling ourselves along so that we could peer over a ridge and look for sharks.
The people living and diving in the Gilis experience pounding currents almost every day—and they take brand new students out into them! I’d like to find a way to work in communications or design, but for an environmental cause.

We decided to head to northern Bali for a while, visit Ubud, return to Denpasar to extend our visas, and then hit up Gili T in early November for the rescheduled course. I marveled at the island’s physical characteristics and amenities; the entire coast was white sand beach, and the main drag was composed of restaurants, cafes, dive shops, and bungalows—many of them positioned strategically on said white sand beach. Doing anything underwater is always a bit more difficult than doing it on land, and I quickly discovered that there’s a fine art to zip-tying a coral fragment to a structure without breaking it. There was an exam for each category, with anywhere from 50 to 100 slides for us to correctly identify, and we had to get 75% or better on each exam to pass. Armed with our slates and pencils, Chris and I drifted with the current down the 100 metre transect, recording our sightings of key indicator fishes. Chris put a few last touches on the eyes, inserting handcrafted pupils with the hope that they’d float and bob hilariously in the current. Even though our BCDs were completely full, the weight of the rebar immediately dragged us right down to the bottom (which, thankfully, was only at about five or six metres). By the time we were finished, our crab was covered, and a few fish were already checking out the structure. Indeed, there was really no way to swim against the pounding current, and those that tried quickly burned through all of their air. Can you imagine doing your Open Water course in current so strong that you can’t swim against it, and you have to hold on to something just to keep from being blown away to Bali? I think of all the work that Delphine and the Gili Eco Trust have done for the area (and I’m sure I don’t even know the half of it). It has got the wheels turning inside of my mind, and I’m wondering how I might make better use of my existing skills (and develop new ones) to benefit the environmental causes that I care about. Close to one of the best Diving spot in Bali, The unspoiled Menjangan Island is just short boat ride away. Our Resort is nearby Menjangan Island and located in the front of Pemuteran Biorock Local Reef restoration project. As I said the Bali National Park, which incorporates Menjangan Island (did you know Menjangan means deer?)is part mangrove, large part savanna and jungle. Well, extending our visas took much longer than anticipated—so long, in fact, that we missed the first three days of the course that was to be one of the big highlights of our travels. You could pop into any one of them and instantly claim a table, lounge chair, or bean bag overlooking the crystal clear blue waters of the Lombok Strait. Transplanted coral fragments zip-tied to the structure soon adhere to the limestone and begin to grow at an accelerated rate.
After all, I’d always wanted to be a biologist (until my eyes glazed over during the pre-requisite physics class and I somehow ended up in visual communication design, new media, and communications instead. Later that day, we transcribed the data to the final Reef Check reports; it was a neat feeling to know that in some small way, we were giving back to our beautiful oceans.
They are huge, playful, and hilarious-looking, what with their buck teeth, humped foreheads, and beady little eyes.
My mask vibrated against my face, threatening to blow off every time I turned my head sideways; I bit down on my reg as hard as possible to keep it from popping out. The reef restoration, the animal clinics, the garbage disposal initiatives… no doubt they’ve come up against some crazy obstacles in their attempts to protect and restore the local environment; I heard stories about entire BioRocks disappearing right out of the water, electrical connections cut, and pieces of the anodes lifted by thieves to sell for scrap.
When I’m not busy immersing myself in the underwater world, I also enjoy running, yoga, and anything outdoorsy.

Only 10 minutes walk to the white sand beach and 20 minutes by walking to the main beach of Pemuteran. Any reproduction of this intellectual property without our permission will be punishable by plank walking, keel hauling, yardarm hanging and pain, lots of pain, GARR! As long as the power is maintained, the corals will continue to flourish and provide shelter for fish and other reef creatures.
Oops!) I figured we’d probably watch a few videos and do a knowledge review or two (PADI-style), and that would be it—we’d be off surveying reefs in no time. We did two more full surveys (at Sunset Reef and Han’s Reef) over the remainder of the course, switching duties and honing our invertebrate and substrate ID skills.
It felt awesome to think that over the next few months, the corals would grow and continue to attract fish and reef creatures—and even serve as a tourist attraction for divers checking out the BioRock structures.
We peered over the ridge for only a few minutes before the instructor signaled us to abort.
But the people here just take it in stride, deal with it, and have an awesome time diving anyhow. But they’ve done it anyhow—always pushing forward, working tirelessly, and ultimately making a difference so big that their projects have gained international recognition and accolades. Most local hotels will make any arrangements you need for activities related to the national park.
The temple is set on the flat land with stone bank as a back drop and the blue ocean just in front. The food here is unbeatable, the prices are right, but since it is a little out of town, the tables are empty.
The mountains themselves catch most of the weather as it comes from the south and thus stay greener longer. This fast-growing phenomenon is in contrast to other types of artificial reefs made of concrete, rubber tires, or other materials—coral doesn’t adhere to man-made materials easily, and if it does, it generally won’t last long. We marveled at our creation, and got all giddy when a few tourists passing by stopped to take photos of it. There are the group of monkeys that live in the surrounding hill forest and are usually standing around the temple in the daytime. This is especially a better option for those who want to enjoy a seaside table, but don't aren't staying at one of the guesthouses with reserved tables at the two well-known seaside restaurants in town. Pleasantly decorated with Balinese touches, spacious rooms in Tiara Homestay are air-conditioned or fan-cooled.

The beautiful beach with black sand and calm seawater is one of the fascinations to visitor to come to this temple. Each room opens out to the private terrace where guests can relax while enjoying views of hill Beratan.
We reviewed slide after slide, and went on several dives to look at the differences up close. I checked my gauge, sighed in relief that I still had well over half a tank left, and readied myself in case I had to be a donor. It wouldn’t even qualify as a dive yet, according to PADI standards (a dive has to be 20 minutes or more, to five metres or deeper). And more importantly, holy crap, when did my eyes start going so badly that I couldn’t see PowerPoint slides from the back of the room?
