Probiotic supplements, or foods that naturally contain or have been supplemented with probiotics, such as yogurt, can actually contain a variety of bacteria strains, and the strain you take impacts what part of the body or medical issue is helped. Lactobacilli, which occurs naturally in yogurt and other foods, and bifidobacteria are the most common strains of probiotics, but even among those two there are numerous different species to take into account as well. For instance, diarrhea in children associated with rotovirus is sometimes treated with Lactobacillus GG, according to WebMD. Prebiotics and probiotics are food ingredients that benefit children and infants with a healthy digestive system, while lowering the risks of fever, diarrhea and tissue death. Prebiotics are referred to fibers or non-digestible carbohydrates that are food ingredients for the good bacteria to help them thrive.
On the other hand, probiotics are nutritional supplements that contain mostly bacteria or live organisms that give a positive impact to health, especially the digestive system. Many food manufacturers add synbiotics to their nutritional products to help enhance the health of children and newborns.
Prebiotics and probiotics have been proven to have both indirect and direct effects on children’s health as according to the studies done among children and infants from the developing countries with those who suffer from diarrhea and malnutrition. In August 2009, a study published in the journal Pediatrics showed the example of indirect positive effects of both probiotics and prebiotics among the children. Synbiotic consumption has been shown to effectively lower the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (a medical emergency among premature babies whose tissues in the colon or intestine undergo necrotizing [or tissue death] on the cause of inflammation and infection) among premature infants. Other benefits of synbiotics include reducing the risk of atopic dermatitis, or chronic skin inflammation (or eczema). It is important to take note that the effectiveness of both prebiotics and probiotics are greatly dependent upon other factors, including type of bacteria and the dosage taken.
It’s like a yogurt smoothie that taste’s a little sweet but still tart and has twice the live active cultures as my favorite yogurt! Probiotics are fermented foods that resupply the good bacteria in your digestive tract.  Prebiotics are the foods that feed the good bacteria.
The army has to have a supply of energy to stay strong and keep defending, right?  That fuel comes from the prebiotic foods. If we eat that way for too long we end up with more bad bacteria than good bacteria and we leave ourselves easy target for colds, flu and other illness and infection. The general guideline is to eat less sugar and processed foods and more whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Look at the ingredients and notice how many foods have sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners. Besides all the obvious benefits to weight and diabetes regular physical activity also helps your immune system. Often, when probiotic research makes the headlines, the result was studied for only one or two strains of a specific probiotic. But when treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, providers may add Lactobacillus rhamnosus to the L. Until recently, it was just something I heard was good for me, knew that many people I look up to for health advice took them, but had not looked into much myself.
After a little research, it looks like yogurt or kefir that has been frozen, as in the yogurt-covered blueberries above, will still hold on to the healthy probiotics and provide you with the same benefits.
Other similar probiotic sources: Kimchi, which is also from cabbage, Miso and Tempeh from soybeans. This article will explain how synbiotics (prebiotics and probiotics) benefits the overall health of your newborns and children.
Very good question and before I go any further with this topic, let’s get the terminology right.

That means probiotics are good live organisms that benefit the health of digestive system by maintaining the population of good bacteria living in the gut. Synbiotics are actually probiotics and prebiotics that work synergistically to help boost the immune system. Another research showed that probiotics can aid in reducing the duration of diarrhea attacks while preventing the recurrence of diarrhea.
In this study, 326 children aged 3-5 were provided either with a combination of bifidobacterium animalis and lactobacillus acidophilus (or called a placebo), or lactobacillus acidophilus over a course of 6 months. This might be due to that they do not migrate to other parts of the body and they themselves are active in the gut. It is always advisable to consult a doctor prior to giving synbiotics (prebiotics and probiotics) for your child’s daily consumption. I know that doesn’t sound so pleasant but just go back to the picture in your mind of an army of good soldiers protecting you! The challenging part, as with all supplements, is to find a good quality probiotic, which often is kept refrigerated in the pharmacy.
I had a vague understanding that they promote digestive health and give you a bit more defense against illness.
It’s a little crazy to see all the live cultures settling at the bottom, but the taste is worth it.
However, even if I had tried the product, I am not an expert and would hope you would make your own informed decision or consult a doctor. Besides these two, dietary fibers like fruits and vegetables are also categorized as prebiotics. Bacteria is said to be started to proliferate in the gut after birth and this process continues for the rest of one’s life. Just remember that antibiotic medications kill the good guys too so after a round of antibiotics  you need to resupply with good probiotic foods or supplements. Probiotics are often called a€?gooda€™ or a€?helpfula€™ bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy,” says WebMD. According to LiveStrong, 1 to 2 billion CFUs is adequate for maintenance of good bacteria in the body, while doses of 10 billion or more may be necessary for taking on a problem like diarrhea. In the case of Probiotics, I can only tell you what I have learned from my brief research (which began before being approached by Quality Blue and ProbioSlim), and my trying the product would only give extra information about how my body personally reacted to it. Since these bacteria help prevent and fight against infections and pathogens, they are particularly important in maintaining the overall health.
Everyone is different, so consult the professionals in your life and make an informed decision about your own body and what goes into it.
