The Italian Job

Mad Movies!   Stars: Michael Caine, Noel Coward, Maggie Blyne, Benny Hill, Tony Beckly, Raf Vallone.
Director: Peter Collinson
Released: 1969

When the outline for this masterpiece was drawn up it was originally going to be twice as long, with the ending that we see coming halfway through. However when the script was written it was noticed that it would be exceedingly long, and the idea was to split it up and make two movies. However once filming of the first part was complete, it was decided that the way it ended made a very good ending to the story, and so a sequel was never made.

I think they probably made a good choice, as the cliff-hanger ending really is a masterpiece and Caine finishes the film in perfect style with, "Hold on a second Lads, I've got an idea." In fact this film managed to provide some excellent quotes from Cain, including "I only told you to blow the bloody doors off." It also includes some excellent moments from Coward, and a brilliant cameo from Hill ... "She a BIG woman you know, BIG, BIG"

Flying Minis!?!

The stunt work in this film is suburb, especially the mini cooper chase. The camera work during the traffic jam is brilliant and a very tight plot and script make this one of the greatest films around, so why doesn't anybody remember it ? Who knows ?

In summary, excellent direction, acting, plot and throwaway lines to boot. A brilliant film and one you must watch.

Score : 10/10
