MEN IN BLACK - if you don't know what I'm talking about then you MUST have had your head stuck in the sand for at least 6 months. The hype has been huge with music, posters and TV trailers bombarding us for as long as I can remember. Jurassic Park's sequel shuddered to a halt when it came against the Men In Black juggernaut. That's right, this is the movie designed to empty your pockets with cross-branded merchandise. Kids are supposed to beg their parents to take them to watch it. So I went with my parents (I couldn't help myself). Firstly let me advise you, if you are over fifty then you will not enjoy this movie. There is virtually no plot, plenty of violence, yucky slime and stupid jokes that are just "silly". Which is probably why kids will unfortunately enjoy it. I would describe the film as 'light and fluffy'. It is undoubtedly fun to watch and the effects do actually help the movie but aren't the main reason for watching (as opposed to in Lost World where the special effects ARE the movie). It won't stretch your brain, it won't drain you emotionally. No it is just plain simple fun and if that's what you want - great! I'd say it lives up to the hype. Its not a great masterpiece but it does the trick. If you do want some serious brain food then look elsewhere, otherwise you've found the right place - but we won't let you remember....(you'll get it when you've seen it). |
