I'm editor of a 120 page annual magazine (for a year!) and my issue finally appeared the other day.

Its the first magazine I've edited which has gone to a proper printer. There were 2,000 copies printed which is pretty big compared to previous magazines I've done. We estimate up to 7,000 people actually read it. Oh boy, the pressure was on.

I ripped open one of the boxes with delight. I had carefully planned the cover and thought it was going to be a memorable part of my contribution. Its going to memorable alright: Memorably bad. The printer has taken certain liberties with the cover turning it into a bright blue and gold nightmare, to my utter disbelief. Opening it up relieves the pain, I laid the whole thing out on PageMaker 6 (win95), but I must say that its sub-A4 size did make it a bit hard going at first. The computer revolution has helped publishing immensely, but it didn't prevent the ridiculously late nights I had (accompanied by cups of coffee so large it was just silly).

Then the readers started reading it. Oh God, I wish I'd been in a hole or climbing Everest with my teeth. My answering machine is absolutely riddled with abusive comments. Walking around was accompanied by nightmarish assaults on my performance as an editor.

Its not that the magazine was bad (as many attested later) its just that it was different and humans don't take to change as well as they would like to believe. Some of the comments were fair points, and yes the numbering mistakes were my fault, but calm down guys!

I still hate that cover, though. To think it was to have been my masterpiece.
