I had an experience recently where a team of people were working together. Everything went ok, everybody sort of picked the area they would take charge in (as I recommended last week!) and off we went.
What was interesting was not only the creativity that came out of people suggesting, arguing and generally discussing but we had difficulties trying to go somewhere. I don't mean physically, I mean knowing where we were heading.
I didn't want to set down a fixed plan as that would have stifled the creativity. What we needed was a shared vision. If I'd said to everyone "Right, lets try and fill everyone who sees the fruits of our project with excitement. Excitement for what we're trying to do." Then everyone, if they'd believed in that vision, would have tried to achieve that.
A common vision in selling units, making the world a better place or counting beans for the whole team can make a world of a difference! But you've got to make them believe in your vision and that's the hard bit!
