In Milwaukee and nationally, universities are cutting costs on parking structures by promoting buses, bikes and car-sharing.
104 colleges and universities around the United States provide free or reduced-price transit service to students.
American colleges and universities are leaders in reducing driving and promoting sustainable transportation.
Here are some of the smart ways universities have been able to reduce solo car travel, according to a new report by the U.S. Among the most common and effective strategies colleges employ to reduce driving to campus is providing free or reduced transit fares. After the University of Missouri at Kansas City adopted a U-Pass program in 2011, transit use by students climbed 9 percent. In Milwaukee, UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University and Milwaukee Area Technical College all currently participate in the U-Pass network. Car-share services have also become an indispensable amenity for students and staff at universities across the country. From providing free bike maintenance, to providing free bikes altogether, colleges are getting creative about promoting cycling.
UW-Milwaukee offers a variety of resources for bicyclists, including bicycle lockers and racks, air filling stations, a fix-it station, and shower facilities.
The University of Colorado-Boulder is another school that’s helping itself by helping people bike. For those who must drive, colleges are pulling out all the stops to encourage carpool trips. An irked driver seeking vengeance on cops who issued him a $137 expired inspection ticket tried to pay the fine in $1 bills folded up into tiny origami pigs a€” inside a donut box. The Houston man posted video of the hilarious exchange on YouTube, under the username Bacon Moose, where ita€™s been viewed more than 200,000 times. The man, who declined to provide his name, told the Daily News he tucked a cell phone with a video camera into his shirt pocket before arriving at the City of Jersey Village Municipal Court to pay the ticket.
Video shows the man sliding two Dunkin Donuts boxes filled with 137 origami pigs under the window, to the teller. Bacon Moose continues to protest, saying that he would have paid by credit card but therea€™s a 5% charge, and that the origami bills are no different than crumpled cash he would pull from his pocket. The teller eventually calls in a police officer, who asks the man to step aside and unfold the bills. When the desk clerk complained, Bacon Moose says his origami collars are no different than crumpled cash he might have pulled from his pocket. Bacon Moose documented the process on a website, where he said it took about six hours to make 137 origami pigs. To explain to you my love of planners, notebooks, journals and all things paper would be impossible, so suffice it to say that I have at least 20 of those types of things in my home right now. There’s a chilling pattern of drastically reduced access to Corps of Engineer parks, eliminating students from federal student programs and other ways to make sequester cuts hurts. Scott MacFarlane from WSB-TV found out this unreasonable assessment of resources pre-dates the sequester debate.
Channel 2’s Scott MacFarlane has learned the transit system is facing higher hurdles getting help from the feds.
The transit system reported 10 percent surges each year in nonviolent crime by young people riding the system. MARTA asked the federal government for $982,450 to help hire five additional police officers in 2011, but received nothing. MARTA said it has nevertheless made progress since reducing youth crimes, in part, by installing new surveillance cameras on its buses. Similar cameras will soon be installed on MARTA subway trains thanks to a separate pot of federal grant money.
Former police chief Jim Bueermann from California represents police agencies nationwide and said departments will suffer because of it. Which means MARTA police, like so many other agencies, will have to keep a close eye not just on the trains and buses, but on their budget too. Why does anyone believe that MARTA should be self-sustaining if roads don’t have to be self-sustaining?
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill supports free transit for everyone in the region. Now other universities in the Kansas City region are looking to replicate that success, PIRG reports. As a result, transit use by students more than doubled between 1997 and 2011, from 21 to 53 percent. They have spillover effects that also help promote transit beyond campus boundaries, by providing a steady source of revenue to transit operators and getting young people in the habit of taking the bus.
UW-Milwaukee now has nine vehicles located on campus sites including Sandburg, RiverView, and Kenilworth Square and offers discounted memberships for university housing residents.
PIRG reports that about 130 colleges and universities around the country use the ride-share platform Zimride to match students for carpooling.
According to UWM’s website, 2,700 UWM students, faculty, and staff members are sharing rides through the service. The university has played a key role in Boulder in helping fund bike infrastructure, covering some construction costs for dozens of pedestrian and bicycle underpasses that allow people to avoid mixing with traffic on busy thoroughfares.

The University of California-Davis offers a range of incentives to carpoolers under a program called goClub. The university reports that in four years, carpooling rates increased between 25 percent among non-academic staff and 30 percent among professors.
While these things won’t make you rich they can help make your wallet a little thicker and can even be earmarked for a certain financial goal. In fact, I earn around $25-$30 worth of gift cards each and every month with almost no effort. We can debate all day long if MARTA ought to exist if they can’t be self-sustaining, but MARTA security is a different debate. The Department of Justice is again chopping the money it gives local police agencies, MARTA included. The University of California, Irvine launched a bike-share system in 2009, long before any major city in California had done so. Universities typically fund the program with fees collected from students or with revenue from parking permit sales. One of those schools, Cornell, found that during a six-month period the service had facilitated 4,000 one-time rides, taking an estimated 2,000 cars off the road.
In good weather, nearly a quarter of students bike to campus — an increase of more than 50 percent since 2006. In 2012, about 60 percent of trips made by CU-Boulder students were by bike or foot, up from 51 percent in 1990. It’s been a long time coming, but some colleges are beginning to recognize the value of online education as a strategy for reducing car commuting. There are also other things you can do to earn SB, like referring friends, playing games, using coupons, and completing special offers. Enterprise has a campus-based car-share service as well, which operates at 82 schools nationwide. In May of 2013 ZipCar began expanding service throughout the city, following the lead of these universities.
Carpoolers also get special reserved spaces at premium locations and a complimentary ride home in emergency situations.
Madison Area Technical College uses video conferencing to connect professors to many campuses, reducing the need to commute to a central campus. When the new year rolls around and it’s time to set goals, make lists, and plan I am a goner. And for me, the hand written style has been more practical than staying current and compatible with electronic device trends.
When I am not being a mom or a wife I love to bake, I love to sew, I love to read and I don't like to sit still.
Stanford University estimates its efforts to reduce solo car commuting have saved the school from sinking $100 million into the construction and maintenance of parking facilities.
At MIT, an early leader in campus car-share, 5,500 students and 300 staff members have Zipcar memberships.
In 2010, the school estimated that it helped 3,240 students avoid commuting to campus weekly. Welcome to Crazy Little Projects where I show off my latest crazy projects and show you how you can do them too.
