Establishing a budget and sticking to it is not easy, but it is the best way to be in control of your finances. This household budget worksheet is adapted from David Bach’s book, Smart Women Finish Rich and helps you determine what you spend monthly in the eight most important categories. Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover is a financial lifesaver in our family (highly recommend it for those starting out on their debt free journey). Most people don’t take the time to develop a complete picture of their annual living expenses for retirement.

Last month, I began discussing the basics of budgeting and included a spreadsheet for download that would allow for seeing all one’s bills and expenses in one place. So … I went looking for some guidelines on how much percentage-wise your budget should be split up.
If you add it up for the low end and high end, those percentages equal 82% and 147%, so you pretty much have to adjust as needed for your needs … oh, and Dave also recommends that you over-calculate your grocery budget.
He also noted that it takes awhile to perfect a budget, so if you go over on the first month, don’t be discouraged.
Besides DR’s budget guidelines, I also came across this blog post with several other budget % breakdowns at A Bowl Full of Lemons while searching to see if I could find other budget breakdowns. I’m going to try to be better at budgeting when I finally move away (again) in two weeks and I based my budget on how much it costed me when I used to live in Scotland. Also, I don’t mean to pry, but would you include things like weekend trips on your monthly budget?
Anyhow, thank you so much for these posts, super useful and force me to think of my budget! Its definitely a good idea to overestimate on items you’re unsure about until you have several months to see fluctuations (especially on groceries and fuel costs). I have also found that I am much more motivated to keep up with my spending and saving when I use tools that are bright and colorful rather than dull and boring. So here’s a peek into what I like to call my Money GPS because it tells us where we are headed financially and how to get there. After the divider I have placed our Savings Target page in a page protector to remind me of our current financial goals. Once the receipts are recorded they go into the page protector behind the Savings Target Page. On the right you will see my Monthly Paycheck Planner from the 30 Days to an Organized Life Book. Behind the Monthly Paycheck Planner I have our Monthly Spending Plan (print here) with our target budget amounts as well as our Freedom Account Spreadsheet which I use to keep track of our second checking account which we use to pay bills and save for irregular expenses like car repairs.

My husband has wisely made the correlation between Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps and an effective decluttering method. Just like Dave Ramsey suggests paying off the smallest debt first I’m recommending that you start with the smallest space in your home to declutter first. When we start small we can see the rewards of our work and that feeling of accomplishment is amazing! When I receive a bill in the mail I immediately open it, discard the envelope, write the bill amount in my calendar on the paycheck date before the bill is due and then file the bill here. Every time we spend money we record the amount on a spreadsheet categorized into different spending areas such as groceries, toiletries and household needs, gas for the car, etc. At the end of the month I review our spending and place the receipts in an envelope labeled with the month and year which goes into our annual file for taxes. I know I am completely uninspired by spreadsheets and computer programs so I thought I would share what works for me.
