Young people who move to Philadelphia sometimes ask me how to get better connected in Philadelphia. Attend Young Involved Philadelphia events — The group is a great hub of smart, hungry, young Philadelphians. Join the Philadelphia Sports Network or another recreational sports league — These groups are great at bringing people together around sports, and most cities have something like them. Join your neighborhood civic or block group — Most neighborhoods that are attracting new Philadelphians have active community groups that improving the city and connecting the civic minded.
Find an online community that fits your interest — Whether it be sports or technology or drinking or your part of the city, someone is probably writing and hosting events that will attract people like you. Volunteer — Find a nonprofit, political group or mission group that has value to you. Below is a list of ideas on how to meet people easily and make friends along the way during your travels. Get a set of poi and play: Another great way to make friends is to get a set of poi and play wherever you find the space and energy to do so.
Sing in the streets: This one is tricky as sometimes I find that people will look at you in one of two ways. Smile: Smiling takes absolutely no talent, no skill, and no money to do and almost instantly can make most others smile as well. Help someone: Helping others without expecting something in return is quite possibly one of the best ways to feel good inside and to help another feel good as well.
Do some random acts of kindness: This one is just lovely and is one of my personal favorites. Give free hugs: One of the things I absolutely love to do when I travel to a new city is to find the center square and spend a few hours giving free hugs. It’s very important to remind and counsel your friends about the things they should avoid or refrain from. If you have a friend who knows some good people that you aren’t acquainted with, ask them to invite those people to hang out with the two of you.
Friendships require a lot of tolerance and it boils down to how much you are willing to give and take. Try not to be weird, be happy, smile and try to take interest in what they’re interested in. Get your friends to know your family as well so that there will be more chances to stay in touch with one another.
When having difficulty with a friend, never say anything bad about them to anyone else, because that makes the issue worse.
Not only is this system pragmatic and effective, it is a great way to get some leisure time.
Some of you brave souls will have arrived in Abu Dhabi this year without knowing a single soul in the city. Jennifer Simon How long have you lived in Abu Dhabi?I have lived in Abu Dhabi since 2005, but lived in Dubai five years before that. You help run Art Night at Cafe Arabia – what inspired you to set this up?Art Night started from the romantic notion of the 1960s art scene in New York, where artists used to gather together in cafes to discuss ideas and talk about the latest events and happenings in the city.

If not, find a museum, advocacy group or another institution that has a young friends group or something else. I am writing this list from my own personal experience (as with everything on this site!) and it is just meant to get you thinking creatively on how to enrich your own travel experience. I have visited many countries where the people there have never seen a set of poi in action and it draws a crowd quite quickly. Either they will smile and applaud you for your efforts or they will look at you as if you are on some kind of mind altering chemicals or drunk. I have found that on many occasions simply smiling at someone breaks down the separation that can be felt when wandering in a new place and allows for a more basic and human connection to occur.
Some of my favorites include: a story, poem or travel tale, some tea, something you may have that is unique to the place you have arrived in (like the poi), knowledge that you have, or a helping hand to someone in need. For example, you could offer to assist that elderly person you see with the bags they are lugging around, or you could help a fellow traveler find their destination. Some ideas include offering to buy tea for another, offering your assistance to someone in need, or giving something that you have to someone that could benefit from it’s use even more than you can. I have done this in several cities with my sign (it has free hugs written in 12 languages on it) and it is absolutely amazing every time. There are times when you want to know how to make friends, and you may be reading this because you are shy, unsure of how to approach a person, or maybe you are just not confident because they may not react the way you would like them to. You have more time to do the things you want to do, like take introspective walks, read books, write and other solitary endeavors.
If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. You don’t necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. A common misconception about this is that you have to be really good at playing a particular sport in order to make friends with others on the team, but not all teams are so competitive.
If you have an unfriendly countenance, people are less likely to be receptive to your friendship.

That will give you a better opportunity to talk and get to know each other a little bit better. If you and your friend agree to meet somewhere, don’t be late, and do notstand them up. One of the best things about having a friend is that you have someone to whom you can talk about anything, even secrets that you hide from the rest of the world.
As you befriend more people, you may find that some are easier to get along with than others.
Some people get jealous of their friends if they talk to other people or make other friends.
A person who doesn’t want to be your friend would probably not end up being a good friend anyway.
Mingle with lots of groups so if a friend turns on you, you can fall back on your other friends.
When you have something interesting that people can learn from you, they tend to stick around and ask you questions.
It is quite likely that I would not have been able to pull off everything I’ve done if these people were simply business contacts.

Making yourself a new set of friends completely from scratch can be tricky, but luckily there are all sorts of groups that are designed to help you do just that. We’ve caught up with members of some of the most active networking groups to find out what they’re all about.
You’ve landed a new job! (Maybe you even used a Loft Resume, which got your foot in the door?) There are many joys that come with a new job especially if you’ve experienced a time of unemployment. Feel free to add your comments or suggestions on other ways that might help you to make friends while traveling! But for me, the simple act of singing (whether you are good at it or not) feels good and ultimately attracts others who are open to joining you or simply being entertained. With this said however, I must caution travelers (especially solo females) that in some countries (mostly Muslim countries from my experience) that smiling at men might be taken as more than just a friendly gesture and more of an invitation for something more… well, I think you know. There are so many ways to share what makes you unique on this planet with others so do look for opportunities to share this with the world!
I had an interesting experience in a train station in Munich Germany that has stayed with me since that time. This last one reminds me of when I was in Izmir Turkey sitting outside of Ege Park Mall having a coffee with a new friend I had made. Ok there was that one time in Taksim Square in Istanbul Turkey (see a video clip here)  (the full article is here) where I was approached by the police several times and finally threatened with jail time if I did not stop offering free hugs which was sad because this was the second place (the first being in Germany) where the people started taking the sign and hugging others in the street as well. In fact, some of the most rewarding friendships are between two people who don’t have much in common at all, but if you like a specific topic, try searching for just a location. As long as you enjoy the sport and support your teammates, joining a local team with a laid-back attitude could be a great way to make new friends. By working together you build bonds with people, and you might meet others who have a passion for changing things the way you do (a common cause). By the same token, you don’t have to be involved with an organization to be social, and any time you talk to someone, you have a chance at making a lasting friend. This is especially important if you meet someone who you aren’t otherwise likely to meet again. They’re the ones who are happy to be around you when things are going well, but are nowhere to be found when you really need them. While you always give people the benefit of the doubt, sometimes you realize that certain friendships are unhealthy, such as if a person is obsessively needy or controlling towards you, constantly critical, or introducing dangers or threats into your life.
If yes, then great, a little humor always keeps conversation light and happy, and people love to be around someone who makes them laugh. You do need to be positive and friendly, however, so that people feel good and appreciated when they’re around you. This is usually the case when you know a lot about something popularly known yet complex, something controversial, or something that could just spark a big debate. Rather, I was able to get a helping hand because everyone who has extended one has been a friend. Between studies, work, extra curriculars and sports, an average university student has little in the way of spare time to kick back with friends.
Meet people in class, at parties, at the bar, while studying at the library or while waiting for the elevator. The text and other material on these blogs are the opinion of the specific author and are not statements of advice, opinion, or information of McGill. We also have guest speakers, which include artists talking about their recent exhibitions, or owners of venues that provide a service to artists such as supplies or studio space. This book holds many nuggets of wisdom and advice, but here are some of the best tips summarized for your convenience: Become genuinely interested in other people.
It was after at least 50 different children approached me in about 4 different countries that I thought it might be a good idea to get another set to share. So as always, trust your instinct and check your environment before deciding on how friendly you will choose to be with the locals. I was wandering through the station looking for the platform for my train when I noticed a blind man standing in one spot searching the ground with his cane in a circle – around and around he turned slowly moving his cane across the ground.
A young boy who was carrying supplies to do shoe polishing approached my friend speaking in Turkish. Remember, friends seldom come knocking on your door while you sit at home playing computer games.
You can talk to anybody: the clerk at the video store, the person sitting next to you on the bus, or the person in front of you in the lunch line.
It’s understandable to want more of a good thing, but try to err on the side of less. Part of being a friend is being prepared to make sacrifices of your time and energy in order to help out your friends. You don’t want to be the guy or girl that always has a better story than anyone else or that changes the subject abruptly instead of continuing the flow of conversation. While you don’t want a pool or a video game console to be the only reason people come over, it will give you an opportunity to socialize with people and for them to get to know you better.

Some of the most interesting people you meet may have a large knowledge base when it comes to things like politics, certain religions, or unusual topics like astrology and divination. You will most surely make friends, some of whom are liable to be beneficial as contacts in the future. Once he handed it to me and I began to play, I was very surprised at how many people began to smile as I passed them strumming this 4 string baby guitar. Then I found myself in Douz Tunisia where a friend introduced me to a tailor who made me 15 sets of new poi to share with the children and to sell in the market. I watched for a couple of minutes as he was passed by at least 30 people before I decided to approach him and offer assistance. When I asked what the boy was saying, my friend explained that he was asking for money to buy a backpack for school. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, BlendAbout and Google+ are great way to meet new people and learn more about the people you meet.
If you show that you remembered things from your past conversation(s) with the person, not only will you look intelligent but he or she will see that you were paying attention and are willing to be a true friend. Just offer your contact info to whoever seems to be potentially a good friend, and eventually somebody will get in touch.
If you are not sure about the pace of your new friendship, check in with your friend and ask directly. If a friend needs help with an unpleasant chore, or if he or she just needs a shoulder to cry on, be there. If your friends make a joke, laugh with them. This way they will understand a bit more about you too, which could potentially spark their interest. Just recently, while advertising for a public lecture I’ve organized I was able to call in a few favours with various friends and acquaintances of mine. Although there’s much that could be discussed in regards to starting a new position, one topic that shouldn’t be over looked is making friends in your new work place. More specifically, be prepared to answer every inquiry with a smile and a question in return.
There’s no worse way to start a job with a new company than to learn why the current employees are not happy with said company. Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
So I decided to post up on a street corner and make up some songs to accompany the beautiful sound this instrument makes. This was such a fun experience and social experiment as for those who do not know, Douz is not really the place for dancing in the streets especially for women but I did not let that stop me from sharing this super fun game with the local and visiting people. I thought about it for a moment and decided that I would give this boy the small backpack that I used for day trips. A church, Masjid (mosque), temple or other house of worship is a great place to start since you have at least have a religious faith in common. Cherish those friends you make who are a positive influence in your life, and do your best to be a positive influence in theirs. The various peers I’ve been chatting up in conference for the past several years have all turned out to be quite ambitious themselves, standing as executives for several organizations and student associations. Writers, photographers, designers and filmmakers have all rocked up to Cafe Arabia, which is inspiring.
Perhaps making friends comes naturally to you and you’re used to being the most liked person in the office. Even if someone brings up a sensitive subject, keep the conversation light and remember that everyone’s favorite subject is really him or herself. It was not too long before people began to approach me and listen to the silly songs I was making up impromptu. Also, I find that playing Poi is a great way to exercise and calm the mind as well which is an added bonus to making friends and playing with people. I took him by the arm and led him to the platform for his train where we spent the next 40 minutes talking about his travel experiences. I asked the boy if this would be ok (with my friends help) and the smile on his face and in his eyes were a definite yes. Only a short few messages later, I was able to recruit several chums to help me the spread the word of our coming event.
Its very informal and welcoming to all, and is also a nice way to mix with different nationalities and learn about new cultures. Even so, it’s never a bad idea to be reminded of a couple of good habits and best practices for your first day in a new environment.
Use lunches and break times to learn the names and interests of your fellow coworkers and develop a sincere interest in other people. So then I decided to start making up songs about my immediate surroundings which made it all more fun and interactive and inclusive.
Meeting this man changed me forever as I realized how much trust and faith he had to have in others to help him get around- and boy did he get around! After I gave him the backpack, I saw him three more times before I left Izmir and each time we saw each other his eyes and face lit up so brightly it melted my heart every time. This will help you avoid an awkward situation and will easily help you win some new office buddies. Remember, when it comes to making new friends, it’s important to be a better listener than talker. But I did not let these things stop me from having a great time and making new friends along the way! This was an experience that I will not soon forget and that has kept me inspired on my own journey. If you don’t like befriending workmates in this way, then we suggest having a graceful answer or alternative.
Linked In or Google Plus accounts can come in handy for these types of situations and are also great ways of networking.
