There have been number of initiatives launched by the previous governments with little or no success in terms of financial inclusion.
But it seems, new PM Narendra Modi’s ambitious “Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana” initiative may change all that. Jan Dhan Yojana is a brain child of Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself – PMO has sent 7.25 Lakh emails to bank officers informing them about the scheme.
Here are some of  Narendra Modi’s Tweets in last few days that points to the amount of importance PM is giving to Jan Dhan Yojana. On the first day of launch of Jan Dhan Yojana, over 1 Crore new bank accounts are expected to be opened – and these are not just empty numbers, the plan has already been mobilized.
Under this scheme, bank account holders will be given 1 Lakh accident cover, Rupay Debit cards and Kisan Credit Cards (for farmers). Financial inclusion of farmers and under-privileged citizens will also mean that loans from informal financing channels (moneylenders) will be diminished. Jan Dhan Yojana definitely looks promising and is sure to go a long way in bringing the much needed financial inclusion in India.
The primary aim of the Jan Dhan Yojana is to bring poor financially excluded people into the banking system by providing them bank accounts and debit cards. Every individual who opens a bank account becomes eligible to receive an accident insurance cover of up-to Rs 1 Lakh for his entire family. Once the bank account has been active for 6 months and has been linked to account holders Aadhar identity , they would become eligible for an overdraft of up to Rs 2,500 , which would further be enhanced by the bank to Rs 5000 over time.
The Jan Dhan Yojana also seeks to provide incentives to business and banking correspondents who serve as link for the last mile between savings account holders and the bank by fixing a minimum monthly remuneration of Rs 5000. The long term vision of the Jan Dhan Yojana is to lay the foundation of a cashless economy and is complementary to the Digital India Scheme.
The Jan Dhan Yojana is expected to be launched formally on the 28th August 2014, when the finer details are expected to made public at a function to be presided by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers in New Delhi.
Thank you for this well written article about Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna, I hope the citizens of India are benefited by this new scheme of the prime minister .
I think first of all information made available to Union Government how many people do not have bank accounts. It is a good scheme for indians to know the banking.and in future it helps to save something for themselves. Yes , if you have an aadhar unique id it will be convenient for you to avail the over-draft facility after 6 months. Can u please tell me wether opening account under jan dhan yojana is chargable or not as BANK OF BARODA is charging amount of Rs.100 per account getting opened under this scheme. I am not sure if it is supposed to be free or chargeable , the final decision rests with the bank, IF Bank of baroda is charging money then you can try other banks like Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Corporation Bank, State Bank of India, Karnataka Bank or Bank of India for opening your acccount.
Indian Banks are business oriented… What is the interest rate on our money kept in the banks?
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a nationwide scheme launched by Indian government in August 2014. The scheme will ensure financial access to everyone who was not able to get benefits of many other finance related government schemes. According to the data issued by finance ministry, till September 2014 around 40 million (4 crores) bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana since the scheme launched. However there was another financial scheme (Swabhimaan) launched earlier in which the target of opening the bank accounts was for villages only. Under the Jan Dhan Yojna anyone who is India citizen above age of 10 years and does not have a bank account, can open the account with zero balance. The account holders under the jan dhan yojana will be given a RuPay debit card which can be used at all ATMs for cash withdrawal and at most of the retail outlets for making transaction for purchases.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana or more popularly known as PMJDY scheme is planning on revolutionizing the traditional banking system in India by providing the banking opportunity and insurance coverage to all including the poor. The purpose of this scheme will definitely benefit the overall economy of the country and the scheme provides some lucrative benefits which should certainly be availed and considered.
Under the PMJDY scheme the account holders will be given worth Rs.30000 insurance coverage if they comply with certain specification of the scheme which includes opening an account by January 26, 2015 and having an accidental insurance coverage of over Rs.
The account holder can take loan benefit of up to Rs.5000 from the bank after six months from opening the account.
Though the technology of using smart phones to conduct our bank transactions is not novel anymore but the PMJDY scheme will allow its account holders to avail the same facilities of checking balance and transferring funds through a normal cell phone which is more affordable to the general economy. Hence PM Jan Dhan Yojana is indeed a prosperous venture and we certainly hope the Prime Minister and the mass economy are both benefited through this new venture. Then my wife went to ALHABAD Bank, where again bank manager who is smart lady told my wife that go to modi and ask him to open the account but its not possible to open the account without id proof. Then my wife called on toll free helpline no for JAN DHAN ACCOUNT 18002331000 to cross check the same that its possible to open account without id proof or not. Please guide sir, how to open the account because government is telling that bank account can be open without id proof but after some time need to submit the necessary id proof when anyone can get it but banks are not helping to open the same account. I have approached Bank of India – Kamothe Branch for opening account for my dad under PMJDY. After form submission, my dad who is over 70 year of age visited branch five times on date and time as informed by the said Branch. Employee within this branch should show courtesy and basic professionalism to all customer irrespective of bank balance or scheme under which they are open.

The advertisement released in Hindi, shows animated people carrying their money and depositing it in their newly opened bank accounts and at the end of the TV Commercial , the people join hands for wealth creation and transform into the logo of the financial inclusion mission. RK Swamy BBDO , one of India’s top 10 advertising agency has won the launch communication mandate for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.
Advertisements for PM Jan Dhan Yojana are expected to be telecast on different communication mediums across the country such as TV, Radio, Newspapers ,Out of Home Media, Social Media and the Internet. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day for all Bank Officials all around the country as they organize camps for opening savings accounts in different parts of the country.
Various banks have planned to mark the launch of this scheme by organizing enrollment camps in rural and urban areas all round the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written an email to all bank officers, referring to his Independence Day announcement of the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana – the National Mission on Financial Inclusion, with the objective of covering all households in the country in the banking network, and having a bank account for each household. Describing the task as ‘gigantic’, the Prime Minister said, “We need to enroll over 7 crore households and open their accounts. Modi has urged bank officers to “put your shoulder to the wheel and try your level best to ensure that no one is left without a bank account. As a first step, under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, every account holder gets a RuPay debit card with a Rs 1,00,000 accident cover.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will be launched on 28 August, 2014 across the nation simultaneously.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the flagship financial inclusion scheme of the NDA Government, is nearing completion of Phase I. The PMJDY was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014 to provide financial empowerment to the poor masses by providing them access to formal banking system. As of December 26, 2014, the number of accounts opened under the Jan Dhan Yojana was estimated at about 10.09 crore. A number of States and Union Territories such as Chandigarh, Goa, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry and Tripura have reported opening at least one bank account in each of the targeted households for the scheme.
On the one hand, opening of 10.09 crore bank accounts within a span of about four months was a great success.
The promise of a bank account, a free debit card with ATM access, insurance coverage – the NDA Government did aim high with the launch of the PMJDY.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India, the card acceptance infrastructure in India is far from robust. Inmates of the Tihar Jail in Delhi are now set to get their own bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan yojna (PMJDY) is a nationwide scheme flow-way related to financial sector placed into orbit by Indian polity in August 2014. However, there was another financial step by step strategy (Swabhimaan) launched once in which the direct of point of departure the thrift (savings) accounts was for villages only. Under the Jan Dhan Yojna all who are India inhabitants above debility of 10 years and does not have a account and loan association account, those are let stand out of the bag the account mutually zero balance can be avail to them. At bottom conclusion, it has been revealed such Jan Dhan Yojna will entirely change the each side of the banking media along with financial services provided across the entire banks. As you know the Jan Dhan Yojana, declared by Prime Minister Sh.Narendra Modi on the Independence Day, was given a thumbs up by many people in the district who designated themselves with various banks on the first day of its execution (amal) in the district today. Pardhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will starts in the bump of scheme Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA). Fifty thousands peoples will found employment directly due to recruitment of business correspondence to opening accounts.
Now the 85.20% houses has opened the account out of twenty crore houses survey in Jan Dhan Yojna Scheme. While the situation is improving, still millions are households in India still do not have any financial inclusion.
The ambitious plan includes offering every household with a basic bank account apart from benefits like debit cards, kisan credit card and free insurance. In his email he pointed out that Jan Dhan Yojana lies at the core of their development philosophy of Sab Ka Sath Sab Ka Vikas. Policy makers have come up with various schemes and initiatives but with little success till date. Bank officers across India are actually visiting slums and villages to meet people to sign-up for Bank accounts. He found all the bank officers jaded and tired – upon asking, they said that they have been visiting places for last few days to get people to sign-up for bank accounts under Jan Dhan Yojana.
With every family having a bank account, the Government aims at paying benefits under various Government schemes directly into the bank accounts.
These moneylenders often charge very high interest rates, which keeps borrower under the financial burden for long.
In the longer run the Govt can now think of giving subsidies as cashbacksto respective accounts. 5 to 6 % and what is the interest rate on loans that we take from these banks 19 to 24% …. PM for starting this Jan Dhan Yojna, by the help of this Central Government will be able to impart all the schemes directly in each citizen’s account.
In this scheme financial inclusion of every individual who does not have a bank account is to be achieved. But in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna the entire individuals irrespective of their area (rural or urban) can get a bank account without depositing any amount if they fulfill other eligibility criteria. Account can be opened in any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitr) outlet, specially designed for the purpose of opening the accounts under this scheme. It is an initiative taken by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who started this ambitious project to help the poor become more financially confident through this venture and allowing every citizen the right to have their own bank account and insurance coverage which was previously impossible for most of the population under poverty. Here is listed some important benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY) scheme which would certainly inspire the country to a more prosperous future for all.
Though the amount might seem insignificant for many but we have to realize the scheme is directed mostly towards people below the poverty line and who are struggling desperately to sustain their everyday living. Agar aapka account allahabad bank main already hai to aap koi koi taklif nahi hogi yeh account khulwane main. I have been confused by bank officials , in this situation what I have to do please e-mail me. The ad agency was selected by committee consisting of members from the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance and several PSU banks. Opening a Bank Khata has never been easier , citizens who do not have a bank account should use this opportunity to open their first savings account.
A separate financial literacy campaign will also be conducted as part of PMJDY to educate the new enrollments about the benefits of savings and credit. He is passionate about microfinance, financial inclusion and social entrepreneurship in India. As we move rapidly forward in this knowledge era with modern banking and financial systems, it is untenable that a large majority of our population is deprived of basic banking facilities. The Prime Minister will launch it formally in Delhi, with parallel functions at the state level which will be attended by various Union Ministers, and also at district and sub-district levels. The scheme endeavours to include all the citizens hitherto excluded from the mainstream banking system and provide them bank accounts, debit cards, and accident insurance coverage.  Additional life insurance is being provided to those signing up for savings accounts under this scheme before the Republic Day of 2015.
According to official reports banks had issued over 7.28 crore RuPay debit cards by December 22. Following the tremendous success of the scheme, the Government of India is also eyeing an entry into the Guinness World Records.
But on the other, there is disappointment to find that 75 percent of these accounts have no balance.
One of the major concerns that have come up now, however, is the lack of infrastructure to translate these dreams into reality.
The country is in need of about 3 lakh ATMs to support all the RuPay cards issued under the scheme while there are only about 1.8 lakh ATMs countrywide at present. About 4,500 inmates of the jail, including under-trial inmates and convicts, are set to get their wages earned for work in the jail projects deposited in these newly-opened accounts. In this scheme across the counter inclusion of every desolate who does not have a bank account will be forthcoming achieved. But in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna the unbenficiery individuals irrespective of their trend (rural or urban) civilians will earn a financial benefits and loan association assets and liability without depositing any dim only if they fulfill other eligibility criteria. Account can be happened upon in any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitr) diner, particularly designed for the final cause of outset the accounts under this scheme.
More beneficiaries are target as rural civilians where they almost do not have any access to any financial services, whether they are eligible or not!

Life Insurance Company is giving offer of opening account  about Rs.30,000 free insurance with one lakh Accident Insurance. However, Jan Dhan Yojana already seems to be on the way to success because of the way it is being implemented. This will ensure that any form of corruption is wiped out when it comes to disbursing benefits under subsidy bill. However, they will have something called a “Small Account” that can opened by submitting self-attested photograph and either a signature or thumb print in the presence of an official of the bank.
Also a health insurance cover of 30k and personal accident insurance of 1 lakh will be a boon to the bpl community. In order for you to see this page as it is meant to appear, we ask that you please re-enable your Javascript! This scheme is very beneficial for the rural population where banking services and other financial institution are rarely available.
The scheme also provides facility of accidental insurance cover up to rupees one lac without any charge for the account holder. The loan benefit can be a scintilla of hope for those people who could utilize the loan amount and invest it in a more profitable outcome, particularly in farming or other agricultural prospect. If the officials say so you should tell them to give you the report 8n written having information that their targets are fulfilled.
Hardly anyone will benefit because of the rider with the scheme that card has to be swiped at the ATM at least once in 45 days which rules out 80 % of the account holders as they do not have balance in the account. Those who open their account within the first 100 days of the launch of this campaign stand to gain additional benefits such as enhanced insurance cover. There is an urgency to this exercise as all other development activities are hindered by this single disability. I sometimes wonder whether we have made matters so complicated that the poor and the marginalized are those who are trapped in a perpetual cycle of exclusion and deprivation. The contentious matter of life insurance has also been discussed extensively and dealt with by the Government. Add to this the high charge for a cap on the number of free ATM transactions and a low interchange fee restricting banks from servicing other banks’ card holders, and the system seems to be far from ideal.
Once the ATM infrastructure is in place, the card usage will increase,” said the MD and CEO of the NCPI, Hota. Inmates with Aadhar cards will be first in line to get their bank accounts due to the administrative ease and the rest will be up next depending on the identity documents provided by the jail authorities.
This scheme is absolutely beneficial for the rural family where financial affair services and other financial institution are barely available & accessible.
The scheme by the same token provides insurance outlet of accidental level secrecy  of economic security guaranteed by government cover likely rupees one lac without charging a single dim to the account holders .
This scheme will make a huge relief to those civilians and can access the financial services within their rural district area itself along with grace access to other cities & states! There were many laws brought by UPA govt, under that banks were required to open bank accounts of poor people at 0 balance.
The Finance Ministry is worried that this trend will not only damage the image of the scheme but also keep its benefits out of the reach of the account holders.
The NPCI was the developer of the domestic card payment system, RuPay as an Indian alternative to global systems such as MasterCard and Visa. The account holders under the Jan Dhan yojna will be subjected & eligibly receive a RuPay debit ovation which can be used at every ATMs for medium of transaction withdrawal and at virtually for any purchase transaction. These accounts will be valid for 12 months and can be further extended after submission of valid ID and address proof documents.
So she first went to STATE BANK, where cleark informed that no can open account without id proof, on other hand I read in news paper that any one can open account into this yojana even if one don’t have id proof.
The so called 12.5 Crore accounts numbers are highly debatable as very few (I guesstimate at less than 10 %) of these accounts are first time accounts.
The LIC has been asked to settle claims within 15 days from the date of receipt of claim, if otherwise in order,” said an official statement. Since the launch of the scheme, the Government of India has added a few conditions for availing the benefits of the scheme. According to the word issued by subsidize ministry, as far as September 2014 far and wide 40 million (4 crores) thrift accounts have been spotted under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan yojna being the step by step diagram launched as per the latest financial survey. He or she can submit the id proof after getting require id proof but bank cleark talk rudly when my wife told her about the same. With extreme pressure exerted by Fin MIn on to Public Sector Banks and RRBs (favourite whipping boys of Fin Min since UPA days) the bank staff ended up opening multiple and garbage accounts in the name of all and sundry. The ambitious financial inclusion scheme was announced by the Prime Minister in his maiden Independence Day speech on August 15. The insurance, for one, can only be claimed if the debit card has been swiped at least once in the past month and a half.
Bank officials will meet inmates in person within the jail premises to manage opening the accounts. My wife met with Bank Manager, he also tolked rudly and told if government is telling you to open without id proof then go with government and open the account. One of the reasons why so few of them have been seeded with Aadhaar which is a unique identifier.
Modi to gain advantages just before the Assembly election so, they are accused of cheating. The scheme, pushed by the government in a mission mode, seeks to provide two accounts to 7.5 crore identified households by August 2018. This also means that the Tihar inmates will be eligible for all the benefits of the scheme such as accident insurance coverage. The main features of the scheme include Rs 5,000 overdraft facility for Aadhar-linked accounts, RuPay Debit Card with inbuilt Rs 1 lakh accident insurance cover and minimum monthly renumeration of Rs 5,000 to business correspondents who will provide the last link between the account holders and the bank. The earlier scheme had no focus on households and no emphasis was given on urban financial inclusion, according to some experts. Besides, they maintained that there was a cumbersome Know Your Customer formality, restricting account opening.
Other deficiencies cited included lack of credit disbursement and 47 per cent of business correspondents being untraceable, resulting in inactive accounts. The new scheme has tried to address all the possible deficiencies and its monitoring would be done at state and district levels.
The 'mission mode' approach has been envisaged with the Finance Minister as head of the mission.
The mission will have five different levels for overseeing the implementation of the programme -- three with the Centre and two with state governments.
The programme assumes importance as 42 per cent of the population is still out of the formal banking system, and has to depend on money lenders for meeting their credit needs. The present banking network of the country comprises of a bank branch network of 1,15,082 and an ATM network of 1,60,055. The second phase will start from 2015 till 2018, covering aspects such as micro insurance and pension schemes like 'Swavlamban'.
