Even Harebrained Schemes promised a bit too much during the Kickstarter for Shadowrun Returns.
The inability to deliver on every promise is what led to the creation of the Shadowrun Returns expansion Shadowrun: Dragonfall. One thing that tends to surprise backers is that even veteran developers have issues with Kickstarter.
Despite two Shadowrun Kickstarter drives above $1 million, Gitelman doesn't see those titles as delivering on the full promise of Kickstarter. When Shadowrun Returns hit $1 million, it put a second city on the table, which eventually became Shadowrun: Dragonfall.
My greatest sin is that I own Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall, but have yet to play them.
While I'm a little concerned at the increasing skepticism for Kickstarter projects (even if it's completely understandable), I'm glad that developers who deliver what they promise can go back to Kickstarter and continue to do well. Who would have thought that transparency, honesty and valuing your audience trust can lead you that far, eh?

I’ve been having some fun lately creating logo emblems in an abstract design style based on the house sigils from Game of Thrones. The designs I’ve been creating are these abstract takes on the various house sigils from Game of Thrones. It’s easy enough to draw the opposite half of the head manually by cross referencing the number of grid lines between each point, but otherwise the path can be copied, pasted, reflected and joined to the original on more complex illustrations. The key to achieving the geometric look is to intersect corner points to split the shape up into lots of segments. In the case of this stag illustration, the triangular shape created from extending the paths from the ears gives a nice point to anchor an additional shape to represent the stag’s muzzle. The antler is quite a complex shape that will be difficult to replicate manually on the other side of the stag’s head, so select the path and go to Object > Transform > Reflect.
There comes a point where were we need to break from the grid in order to add the finer details. Giving key facial features like the eyes, nose and ears a black fill will make the face more recognisable.
On this particular illustration the antlers seem quite disconnected from the head, so the Scissors tool is used to cut the head outline where it intersects the antler.
Select the entire illustration and bump up the stroke weight to 2pt to give it more presence.
What would really ground the illustration is a slightly thicker outline, but there isn’t one continuous path to select. Press CMD+Alt+2 to Unlock All, then increase the stroke weight of the outline shape to 3pt and select the option to align this stroke to the outside. Adjust the Limit value in the Stroke palette until all the square corners are given nice long spikes.

That question led me to this conversation with Harebrained Schemes co-founder Mitch Gitelman about the developer's success on Kickstarter. Kickstarter only gives you money if you make it over your funding goal, which tends to drive developers to promise almost anything and everything to reach that mark.
Gitelman admits that when the money's coming in hot and pushing you towards higher stretch goals, there's a tendency to keep making up new ones. The $1 million stretch goal for Returns was an additional city and a backer poll chose Berlin as the location.
The studio is transparent, letting fans into the development process, but there's still aspects that remain behind closed doors. In addition to the tendency for scope creep mentioned above, the stated funding goal on many Kickstarters isn't enough to develop the original vision. Golem Arcana was the studio's second Kickstarter project, offering fans a tablet-enhanced board game with physical miniatures.
He's also pretty happy that "all the good guys aren't necessarily white and pretty." It makes the game stand out in a crowd.
Gitelman says the studio won't be returning to Kickstarter for further additions to the game. Many developers will Kickstart a game and then put the alpha and beta versions on Steam Early Access. Shadowrun: Hong Kong's million dollar stretch goal is an additional mini-campaign in Hong Kong, but I'm curious as to what comes next. I backed Shadowrun: Hong Kong on the strength of the underrated original campaign and the even-better Dragonfall. They did very well with their Kickstarter for Planetary Annihilation, but now that the game's released, it's been poorly-supported and widely considered to be disappointing.
Among all the recent scandals surrounding kickstarter, it’s nice to read about a tale of success and more importantly, a case study of HOW that studio succeeded. This particular style where a subject is simplified and replicated with just straight lines results in cool stylized graphics which make fantastic logo designs.
Each one is created using only straight lines to create a stylised polygonal appearance which provides consistency throughout the series despite each sigil featuring a completely different animal. We need to make use of the built in grid tool to give our illustrations a consistent structure. Not only does this add to the cool look of the final illustration, it also helps you visualise where details can be added to make the graphic look more like the subject it’s meant to be representing.
It can be tricky working within the confines of the grid, but it will ultimately provide the structure and consistency that’s needed to achieve the abstract geometric style.
The difference in line weight really adds to the design and helps the eye distinguish between the inner details and the main features that make the drawing recognisable. Developer Niantic has said that this feature is coming, so hopefully we don’t have to wait long. It would also make us more invested in how well are friends are doing in their adventures, since they could capture a Pokemon we might want to make an offer for. It helps if the characters of the web show have very different personalities and goals – this can create drama which will help shape each show.
You can have past episodes and featured episodes of your videos – just like a real web show. Free blogging platforms may have plugins and widgets for you to add all kinds of fun stuff – such as polls and quizzes.

According to Gitelman, being able to say "No" to your backers is important and doing so increases your credibility. This can find smaller developers on a grueling pace if they decide to stick to their promises.


When it came time to add Berlin, the team realized that getting Berlin in-game on schedule was going to be impossible. Golem Arcana just barely crossed its funding goal of $500,000, but Gitelman lights up when he talks about the game. Despite this, Golem Arcana required far more work from the studio during its funding drive. They've released a number of additional expansions, featuring physical and digital-only characters. Valve's service gives fervent fans a chance to guide the development of their favorite titles, but it usually comes at a premium. Shadowrun Returns' city poll put "more Seattle" as the next locale after Hong Kong, but Gitelman doesn't know if that's where Shadowrun is going in the immediate future.
Yeah, Harebrained had to sacrifice profits to deliver these things to a high standard, but now they've established a good reputation and are reaping the rewards.

Kickstarter drives over-promise, over-estimate, get delayed, and get cancelled all of the time.
The studio followed that a year later with Golem Arcana, a tablet-enhanced miniatures board game.
It's a unique idea that wouldn't exist without Kickstarter, one that thrives now that it's a reality. Have props around that suit the theme of the show – some bright, cool things and maybe even some weird, zany things!
