Three ex-minor league baseball players are suing Major League Baseball, commissioner Bud Selig and their former teams in U.S.
The lawsuit portrays minor league players as members of the working poor, and that’s backed up by data. The three players suing baseball also stress that minor league salaries have effectively declined in recent decades. Baseball gets away with paying minor leaguers so little in part because the sport is exempt from antitrust law. For every Clayton Kershaw, the Cy Young Award winner who just inked a $215-million extension with the Dodgers, there are countless minor league relievers who were called upon to save his arm whenever he hit his pitch count in Class A ball, not to mention all the hitters against whom he sharpened his craft. Plenty of those guys will never sniff big-league play or the $500,000 minimum salary that comes with it, and yet they’re necessary to help great prospects become great players succeeding for great teams.
And though, as McCann details, the potential fallout from the lawsuit could prove dangerous to the sport, it doesn’t seem fair of the league or the MLBPA to force minor leaguers to accept an antiquated salary structure that is not in any way commensurate with the way the money throughout the game has increased in the past few decades.

Minor leaguers make a trade-off: They knowingly accept low wages, often passing up college scholarships in the process, for the opportunity to someday earn a fortune. The ex-MLB pitcher says he smoked with the future president at Boston’s Museum of Science.
According to the complaint, while big league salaries have risen by more than 2,000 percent since 1976, minor league salaries have increased by just 75 percent during that time. Plus, as McCann’s post points out, many higher-round draft picks command big signing bonuses that make up for their low salaries.
But most of them never do, and it seems short-sighted on behalf of the sport and the union to not figure out a way to help them earn at least a reasonable living wage.
As a point of comparison, fast food workers typically earn between $15,000 and $18,000 a year, or about two or three times what minor league players make. When taking into account inflation, minor leaguers actually earn less than they did in 1976.

And even assuming the numbers presented in the case are accurate, plenty of people will have little sympathy for anyone paid even a pittance to play a game professionally. Some minor leaguers, particularly those with families, hold other jobs during the offseason and occasionally during the season. While the minimum salary in Major League Baseball is $500,000, many minor league players earn less than the federal poverty level, which is $11,490 for a single person and $23,550 for a family of four….
