In 1993, it was fodder for the farce The Flirting Scholar with Stephen Chow and Gong Li. Perhaps the most memorable version is The Three Smiles, the number four hit of 1969 and the last huge box office success for the genre of Huangmei Opera that once constituted the most popular trend in Mandarin musicals. In a gender-bendering turn, Shaw Brothers' supreme star, Ivy Ling Po, plays the scholar who does his best to seduce the sprite-like servant, played by "Baby Queen" Li Ching, the youngest star to ever be named Best Actress.
