Gyöngyössy Imre Oscar-díjra jelölt filmje a második világháború drámai és fájdalmas időszakáról szól. A zsidó Jób, feleségével, Rózával, egy kis magyar faluban él. Hét gyermeküket a felnőttkor elérése előtt eltemették, ezért a család utód nélkül maradt. 1943-ban örökbe fogadják a katolikus neveltetésű Lackót. Jób úgy akar tekinteni a fiúra, mint a saját gyermekére. A férfi elkezdi tanítani Lackót az élet bölcsességére és a zsidó vallásra. A házaspár nagyon örül, mert a gyermek fogékonynak bizonyul az új hit felvállalására. Egy nap azonban Jóbot és Rózát koncentrációs táborba hurcolják. Vajon mi fog történni a magányos Lackóval?
