With swelling cities and diminishing agricultural lands, using technology to improve cultivation methods is the only way to maintain balance.
The idea has suddenly taken off and real estate developers are using this as an opportunity.
In the past they were used as bomb shelters and now, seventy years later, we can say that London’s subterranean tunnels may go back to playing a role that, even though not as crucial as before, is at least useful. Growing Underground has been experimented for a year and a half, in a small part of a tunnel, and during this period the two entrepreneurs have demonstrated how well the project works, even to those most sceptical.
Special LED lamps are used to replace sunlight and the plants are grown using the hydroponic method. The next goal is to expand the project and make the best possible use of the 10,000 mq available. Until recently the trend in urban farming was to find space on roofs and balconies, but now new frontiers are opening up in the use, where possible, of underground tunnels too.Now we really have to say that everywhere is good for growing things!

Conventional farming and agro-methods are now being challenged by some really great contemporary ideas backed by cutting-edge technology. Well known names like Asahi Kasei Homes and Obayashi are trying to commercialize the business and introduce their own agro-yield. Japan has been testing indoor hydroponic farming using LED lights, yes LED lights to grow lettuce inside factories.
The method can also be used inside homes, where there is lack of sunlight, and it looks great as a part of home-decor. Finally, even though the underground environment isn’t favourable for pests and diseases that usually attack plants, the installation of systems to purify the environment, such as special air filters, will allow crops to be grown without the use of pesticides. Tamagawa University and Nishimatsu Construction together have been working on this project since last October and started experimental operation using LED lights and liquid fertilizer.

Though there are some barriers to entry, it takes 40 days to grow lettuce which is more than usual and the equipment needed costs quite a lot. But, the technology is still in its nascent stage and bigger names like Panasonic are taking interest in it. The resulting yield known as ‘Super Lettuce’ contained 2.6 times more antioxidants than usual and it was completely pesticides free.
