Buying all our produce and fresh foods from the supermarket is quite unnatural, and it has been a rather quick transition in the past few decades.
This practice represents our past, and it may be that it represents our future as well, in a world with ever-growing population. Ask your local gardening supplier what vegetables thrive in your area; it is better to start with less fussy vegetables, until you get the hang of things. After having chosen your plot and plants, the next step to how to start a vegetable garden is planning the site, and thinking where everything should grow.
Depending on the vegetable, you will be planting as early as February, or as late as August.
Gardening gloves – As much as we like getting our hands dirty, we don’t like getting them that dirty.
There are three common types of gardens, all of which have their own pros and cons: traditional (in-ground), container, and raised beds.
An in-ground garden often provides you with limitless options for what you can grow, while utilizing the natural ecosystem of nutrients, bacteria, and insects already present to help your plants grow.
For those that can’t plant a traditional in-ground garden, whether because of poor soil or no soil at all (apartment or city dwellers), container gardening is a fantastic alternative! Simple tests are available from any garden center to check the quality of your soil, including its pH.
Beyond that, the entire permaculture of insects, bacteria, and microbes do better in well-drained soil. If you are digging a garden on fallow land (or your garden needs a serious makeover), then you should prepare your plot in autumn by digging 6-8 inches into the soil, removing visible rocks, and working in as much organic matter as you can before you start to plant the next spring. Deciding which fruits and vegetables to grow will depend on what appeals to your diet, which plants will fit within the size of your garden, and which plants are appropriate for your hardiness zone. For the cost of a packet of seeds (usually a few dollars) your garden will more than pay for itself with the amount of edibles it will produce—not to mention be superior in nutrient content, freshness and taste to! You can grow all plants from seeds, but many “starts” or seedlings are available from your local nursery—tiny tomato, pepper, onion, broccoli, and melon plants, started in a nursery greenhouse, are usually ready to plant directly into the soil. After your seeds or seedlings are in the soil, you can use additional compost as mulch to improve water retention, help control weeds, and keep the roots cool in hot weather. Unfortunately, Mother Nature isn’t always reliable enough to provide sufficient rainfall for a garden. Besides how cost effective having a home garden is, this is the other big reason for why I am such an advocate for growing you own vegetables. For me especially, there are so many physical and emotional benefits that I reap from gardening.
Using the non-gardening season to plan will not only help you find useful information, but you can find out whether or not particular plants are worth your time, since some varieties require more maintenance than others. Choose a location in an area that will not blot the landscape after growing season has faded. If you have decided on implementing beds, try a strip of area about 4 feet wide by 8 feet long.
With whatever design you have chosen, try to group crops according to their rate of maturity.
You’ll want to check on your garden frequently, making sure that it has sufficient water and no weeds or other problems.
Starting a vegetable garden is not that difficult or demanding as long as the proper care and maintenance is provided. Why let your gardening season end, with a little creativity there are many vegetables that can continue growing right through winter.  I find this fun as wells of a rewarding challenge bringing in some great produce from my garden all year round. Now that found the vegetables you want to grow now is a good time to check those hardy temperatures of the vegetables you have chosen compared to your average winter temperatures.  If your average low for the day is going to fall at or below that limit you may want to consider skipping that one or invest in a little protection.
Though your plants may grow well in the low temperatures germination can be incredibly slow at lower temperatures even for cold weather plants.  For this reason you should start your vegetables indoors and bring them outdoors with some minimal hardening off.

The best place for a vegetable garden is a spot that gets direct sunlight all day throughout most of the growing season.  The north side of a house or the north side of tall evergreen trees will get less light than the south side of the house and is usually not the best placement. If you have a partially shaded site, you might try: lettuces, kale, broccoli, cabbage, peas.
A silty-clay soil will feel like a very fine powder and will hold alot of moisture making it sticky when wet. A soil high in organic matter is desirable and will be a rich colour, hold moisture well but not be overly wet or sticky, and it will have a deep earthy smell. If you live in Arizona, where its hot and dry, you’re not likely to find much useful information in a book about gardening in England, where its rainy and cool.  Join a local gardening group or find a local forum online and learn from experienced gardeners what plants grow in your conditions and which don’t.
Having lived in Alberta for decades, I never had an opportunity to grow cucumber, pumpkins, or squash.
When you find out the length of your growing season (number of days between frosts) choose vegetable varieties that will mature in that time period, e.g. Do mix the soil until it is crumbly but not powdery and fine.  Don’t overwork the soil – its good for some pea-sized to marble-sized and even a few golf-ball-sized clumps to be present. Don’t work the soil when its wet.  Its okay to turn it while it’s a little moist but working wet soil will ruin the texture and interfere with drainage. Do dig weeds out by the roots.  Once you pull them, bang them a little to release the soil, then toss the weed on your compost pile or just leave it in the spaces where you will be walking.
Do place mulch between the rows to hold in moisture, to prevent compaction of the soil when you walk on it, and to keep weed seeds from sprouting.  Mulch can be grass clippings (only use chemical free grass in your veggie garden), straw, leaves, dead weeds, bark chips, or other plant material. Dense soil, like clay, is often too thick for roots to grow properly and doesn’t drain well.
If your soil is too thick and does not drain well or does not hold moisture well, the answer is compost, compost, compost. Next comes planting them to ensure they’ll get adequate sunshine and water as they grow. It is also a good idea to try and grow the vegetables which are rarer or more expensive in your area, so you have your own batch at home. You should begin by drawing your ideas on paper, so you can figure out better which veggie requires more space, which would do better with more sun than others, where the climbing plants should sit, and so on.
The soil has to be shoveled at least 30 centimeters deep, and all the roots and stones and debris cleared from it.
Be careful not to plant the seeds to close to each other, but not too far in between either, or you waste space.
Speaking from experience, it is worth the investment to buy high-quality items, as broken or insufficient tools are not only frustrating but cost you more money and time in the long run. Your containers can vary in shape, size and material to suit your gardening needs (and personality). Materials used to create raised beds include cinder blocks, bricks, untreated wood and even rocks.
When a garden is rich in these resources, the soil itself will provide nutrients for the plants to grow, which means that artificial fertilizers are often unnecessary. You can sow plants that need less sun in early spring or late summer when the sun is less vibrant, too.
If you notice a plant’s leaves, fruit, or buds start to brown or droop, increase the water supply. This is actually something that I just recently got really into this past summer but I have learned so much in such a short time. Of course, it tends to be mostly dormant at that time, as our schedule is plant in October, harvest in July. To determine how many square yards you’ll need you can call a local supplier and tell them the dimensions of your garden. So if you are new to gardening art, begin with a small garden, which you can expand any time. Each batch of rows, blocks or raised beds should ideally have one square meter, but you can adapt these measurements to your own particular space and its shape.

If you suspect it is not fertile, have it tested, and then you will know what sort of nutrients to add. Beyond terra cotta and clay pots, almost anything can work as a gardening container: plastic bins, untreated wood barrels, galvanized metal buckets, a hanging planter, a planter box on a windowsill—even a recycled yogurt container or an old boot!
A raised bed can be anywhere from 6 inches off the ground to the height of a standard table, and generally, these beds are about 3-4 feet wide with a depth of at least 16 inches. If a label reads “direct sow,” you can sow the seeds directly into the soil, while others need to be started indoors. When choosing what to put where, remember to place taller plants on the north side of your plot to prevent shadows from forming and inhibiting the growth of shorter plants.
Oddly enough if a plant is water logged, oxygen is unable to circulate to its roots and the plant will show signs of stress similar to dehydration.
There will be successes and failures, but half the fun of gardening is learning as you grow! My vegetable garden is such a relaxing thing for me and my daughter to do together and it gives me an extra excuse to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, even on hot summer days when I would rather not leave my air conditioned house. Growing your own vegetables can not only save you money at the grocery store, but it can even become a source of income for you.
By growing organic, you choose not to use all the harmful pesticides that grocery store produce is covered in. Now that I have my daughter, I want to find things we can enjoy together and I want to make sure she gets outside and enjoys fresh air. There have been plenty of times where I end up throwing a good portion of the vegetables I buy in the garbage because they went bad before we had a chance to eat them.  Having my own vegetable garden right in my back yard has completely solved this problem for me.
Besides the fact that organic gardening has a larger variety to choose from, heirloom vegetables taste so much better than any gmo vegetables that you will get at the grocery store. Placing the garden near a fence or trellis can also offer you the opportunity for growing vine crops as well, while taking up less space. Normally there are just a few green leaves sprouted above ground through the worst of winter.
They’ll deliver, dump it on your driveway, and you get to use your wheelbarrowing skills to move it. In addition, if it is a small garden, avoid plants that occupy space, like corn, pumpkins and so on. When the soil is ready for planting, read the instructions on each seed package and see what special requirements each has.
Finally, we advise you to rotate crops every year and avoid planting vegetables in the same spot; otherwise, they become prone to diseases, and the soil loses its fertility as well. You can find most of these items in home improvement stores, gardening supply stores (or nurseries) and online retailers.
Every container is different; some lose moisture quickly and others retain heat, so research before you buy.
Either way, the packet of seeds or starter plant will include directions about the spacing, watering, and thinning practices that are most suitable for that particular fruit or vegetable. Green leaves and stems that turn yellow or lighten in color could also be a sign of overwatering.
There have been many different things I’ve discovered about organic gardening but I have collected just my favorite reasons why it is important to start your own vegetable garden.
Why not set up a vegetable stand at the end of your driveway and make a few extra bucks, on top of what you’re saving, with the vegetables you cannot consume yourself?
Because you are the one growing and harvesting all the produce, you greatly reduce the risk of your vegetables contracting salmonella and E. Whenever I need any sort of vegetable, I just go out back to my vegetable garden and pick of what is necessary for that day.

The lush moist climate prevents extreme temperature variations during the summer, the soil is more acidic than in Alberta, and the growing season is about a month longer – I’m in heaven. Compost means any biodegradable material (leaves, barks, pine needles) from which you can obtain a paste that is mixed with the soil. Make sure the container has adequate drainage and the appropriate depth to sustain the roots of your plants. Carrots, cabbage, and other deep-rooted vegetables do especially well in raised beds because you avoid compacted dirt that could be full of obstructions to their deep roots. To confirm the problem, reason that waterlogged plants do not respond positively to more water. Research has shown that sunlight can improve sleeping habits, promote a stronger immune system and also decrease the chances of depression, which is something I’ve also struggled with in the past. Besides always being fresh and not wasting food that has gone bad, vegetables eaten when picked ripe taste a heck of a lot better than grocery store produce. Tomatoes and peppers must be grown from the seed stage in pots, in the house, with about 8 weeks before transplanting them outside. A container garden is ideal for using store bought organic potting soil, which is aerated, nutrient rich, and weed-free. Some water-rich fruits and vegetables, such as melons and cucumber thrive when they receive more water, while others, such as tomatoes, hate getting their feet wet too long. Having a very young daughter at home, it is very important for me to control how her food is grown because I can’t risk her getting sick.
Besides all those great benefits that all stem from gardening, having a vegetable garden encourages your whole family to eat healthier, having all this delicious fresh produce right in your backyard. Produce from the grocery store has been picked half ripe, which drastically effects the flavor. The improvement of the quality of the ground is done only after several seasons of treatment. Always water plants at soil level in the morning, as evening watering can make them more susceptible to disease and mildew.
Not every plant is suitable for container gardening and not every container matches up well with every plant. Remember that deep-rooted plants (carrots, for example) require a deep pot (at least 10-12 inches).
Be diligent about watering and weeding your precious new garden and chances are, it will flourish before your eyes!
Ideal candidates for container gardens are leaf and head lettuces, spinach, green beans, peppers (require staking) onions, radishes, tomatoes (require staking), squash, carrots, garlic, and herbs.
