The natural and man-made heritage of Chile is very diverse, also thanks due to extreme length of the country extending from driest deserts in the north to the most southern historical inhabited lands of the world in Patagonia. The magnificent scenery of Patagonian Andes and fjords with snow-capped volcanos, araucaria and alerce stands, thousands of waterfalls and countless beautiful observation spots. Atacama - the driest desert of the world with the unique landscape of quebradas - deep canyons with oasis, containing unique biological, archaeological and architecture heritage. Chile contains numerous very tall but little known waterfalls - in Patagonia there are countless unmeasured waterfalls which are several hundred metres tall, located in pristine, beautiful setting. Cueva del PacAfico (Pacific Cave) and Porche de la Baleine (Whale Cave) on Madre de Dios Island - Magallanes.
Chile is extremely rich with petroglyphs and, thanks to extremely dry climate in Atacama desert, also with geoglyphs. The Chilean port town of Valparaiso is one of the country's busiest cities and popular tourist attractions - a popular port of call for cruise ships gives it that position.
Valparaiso is also Chile's busiest shipping port, and the waterfront is dominated by the harbor itself, with tankers regularly parked offshore and container ships unloading wares below the Artilleria hill at the southern end of the harbor. Honestly, I never thought that the snowcapped Andes were visible from at the Pacific Ocean. Awesome just wonder how the snow peaks 'float' superbly and filling across the background as they provide the vital focal of interest.
Great view, specially because of the presence of the Andes that seem to be so close to the city!
The peculiar urban network of ValparaAso started to develop after a disastrous earthquake in 1730 - the survivors now moved away from the small, dangerous seaside plains and built their new houses on the hillsides.
The successful economy of Chile attracted numerous immigrants from Europe and the United States. What could not do the arcane powers of nature, was done by the deed of human thousands of kilometres from ValparaAso.
Slower development of ValparaAso continued - but the weak economics left the city centre unchanged for long decades.
ValparaAso has numerous diverse neighborhoods with distinct architecture and planning traditions. Down, in the plains between the hills and the ocean are located quartals with the late 19th century buildings - ornate and rather typical for this period in European cities. Like an enormous amphitheatre above the plains rise steep hills, all densely covered with buildings.
These caves have formed in a pure marble and are bathed in the deep blue water of General Carrera Lake. Beautiful views from so many of these buildings, and framed perfectly by those dramatic mountains! Incredibly steep streets on the hillsides are lined with buildings in gaudy colors and in many places still are working weird technical devices - funiculars with dilapidated vagons.
But - as the Panama Channel was opened in 1914, the fortunes changed and the development of ValparaAso slowed down. ValparaAso was established by Pedro de Valdivia in 1544 and for long time remained a silent village. The city became the main port of the new country and helped to develop independent economy - port of ValparaAso secured trade with United States and other Pacific countries, making Chile less independent from Spain. This time ValparaAso was full with vigour and ambitious rebuilding was started, now modernizing the city. In 1914 there opened the Panama Channel and ValparaAso immediately was thrown from a limelight to the backwater of global economy.
Yes, this is the harsh truth - the value of well preserved historical towns often comes through decades and centuries of misery and powerty. Many houses, streets and also - funiculars - still are here, mostly intact - but also dilapidated. Central features here are Plaza Echaurren and La MatrAz Church, built in 1842 (the first church was built here in 1658).
Elevators of ValparaAso represent simple vagons mounted on a triangular platform with wheels.
Water originates from the base of Ventisquero Colgante glacier and falls more than 350 m high in a single plunge as approximately 30 m wide stream. ConguillAo National Park contains some of most visually impressive and valuable araucaria (Araucaria araucana (Molina) K. Cities were filled with workers from Chile, Peru and Bolivia who mined the largest salpeter deposits of the world in the 1880 - 1930s. Wooden structure unites local and European art traditions and is built without a single nail. The historical architecture with all the funiculars and steep streets was conserved in time like a fly in amber. Unfortunately most of newcomers did not have much luck here and ended up living in favelas - shanty towns. In the region around the city developed agriculture and mining (including the mining of the unique resources of salpetre) and more and more industries were built. Santiago took over the incentive and became the main political and economical centre of Chile.
Some of these neighborhoods developed as ethnic enclaves - thus Cerro Alegre and Cerro ConcepciA?n were constructed mainly by the German and English immigrants.
Some areas are rich with nitrates - easily soluble minerals which in other circumstances are consumed by organisms. Sanctuary consists of two parts - one is round stone platform, another consists of three rectangular stone settings. Central staircase serves as the central axis of town, which consists of densely located, large, colourful buildings. It is located in uninhabited village, which is used only in a case of religious festivities.
Here rich nitrate deposits have been formed from atmospheric nitrogen, possibly by lightning. Especially impressive is the pure stand of the endemic tree-fern Dicksonia externa south from Cerro de los Innocentes. This represents typical desert village of the region, similar villages are Caspana, MamiA±a (TarapacA?), and the remote Toconca where villagers have retained numerous ancient traditions. In the city appeared warehouse districts, banks, diplomatic missions and representatives of foreign companies.
