Hydroponics gardening (using water solutions instead of soil) is not new and has been around for centuries and in fact offers many advantages when compared to using soil for growing plants and vegetables.
Hydroponics gardening allows for growing vegetables much faster often much healthier plants are cultivated. Another major benefit of hydroponics gardening is that garden weeds that grow in soil have no place to grow in a hydroponics environment. Welcome to Hydroponics GardenerInstead of using soil (for lots of practical reasons) you can grow plants in a nutrient rich water solution with growing media (such as coconut fiber, rockwool and different types of high-mineral rocks). We bought a quarter acre of North Carolina several years ago and started planning and planting gardens. After losing many of our plants we learned the importance of adding amendments to the soil.
Rocky soil – The seed may germinate, but once the hot season arrives, there is no supporting root structure and the plant withers.
Gardeners often become confused as to whether vegetables should be planted from seed or transplants. However, plants which have been established by sowing seed directly into the soil often have a stronger, deeper root system which consequently grows a healthier, larger, more productive plant than those grown by using transplants.
TIMING and VARIETIAL SELECTION determines the success or failure of directly-seeded crops and transplanted vegetables. First tomato seed planting in front is poor germination compared to the planting a week later (top seedlings) with same seed because of environmental adversities. Unfortunately, there are only a few vegetable seed companies left in the world, and they are eliminating the older, Texas-proven varieties in favor of new, "improved' hybrids which have a significantly higher seed cost.
Success in seeding vegetable crops depends on factors such as (1) planting technique, (2) soil moisture and (3) fertility. Sow the seeds on top of the bed and gently rake them in; a general rule of thumb is to cover the seed approximately 2 to 3 times their widest measurement.
For example, pepper seedlings are easily obstructed in their upward thrust and fail to emerge if planted too deep.
The excess plants must be thinned (removed) or relocated to obtain the optimum distance between mature plants. When the seedlings are about three inches high, space them twice as thick as you ultimately want the mature plants to be.
If the intent is to move or transplant the excess seedlings be sure to lift the seedlings or transplants from beneath with a large spoon or trowel. If you do not have time to pre-irrigate the soil before planting, use a hoe or other suitable tool to open a very shallow furrow or trench on top of the planting bed and slowly add water to the trench. A higher percentage of seed will emerge if the soil surface is not allowed to dry and get hard. Most seeds (with the exception of lettuce!) do not require light to germinate, but seedlings need full, direct light as soon as they emerge. It is VERY important to future growth and ultimate yields that germinating seed IMMEDIATELY have plant-available sources of certain essential nutrient elements.
After seedling emergence and during early development, strong, rapid plant growth can be assured by irrigating with a solution of soluble fertilizer (Miracle Gro, Peters 20-20-20, Hasta-Grow, Rapid Grow).
Flowering annuals require 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) of slow-release fertilizer every 4 to 8 weeks for the life of the plants.
All of this may sound confusing (Why start now when I am still harvesting spring-planted tomatoes?!) and difficult (Most folks have never grown tomatoes and peppers from seed!).
However, if you depend on old, spent plants to produce quality produce in the fall, you are going to be sadly disappointed. Besides, you need to rid the garden of the HUGE insect population which has been reproducing on your plants. With fast-growing, frost susceptible crops such as beans, peas, squash and cucumbers, plant in successions of a week apart so you will have fresh vegetables right up to the first hard frost of late fall.
While clay soil is hard on plants, the salt flats found in some areas of the world prohibit any plant growth. You dream about a lush green lawn, a wonderful flower garden or a productive vegetable garden, but the puzzle has a missing piece: good soil. Don`t be a perfectionist, so let small quantities of scattered grass spread out across the ground.
Bees are also attracted by clovers, consequently these tiny insects will come more often and pollinate your plants.
It is recommended to rotate plantings from year to year so that the vegetable garden soil gets the opportunity to regenerate its depleted nutrients. Mulch adds organic material to the garden soil, prevents erosion, excessive evaporation and inhibits weed growth. Spread the autumn leaves as mulch over the garden soil, because it will protect the soil from eroding during winter. Do not use black walnut leaves this way because they contain dangerous elements that will poison the soil. The best materials for composting are horse, cow, goat, sheep and poultry manure, fallen leaves, pulled weeds, vegetable peelings, egg shells, grass clippings and leftover food scraps. The recipe I am sharing today is the ONLY recipe that I have ever used and I have been very successful with my gardens!
All the essential nutrients are in the soil recipe and you most likely will never need to feed your plants or fertilize them because all the nutrients are right in the soil.
So yes, I will say up front that there are a few extra steps in creating the perfect soil, but it is worth the effort!
In addition to this book, I also learned so much from The Art of Gardening: Building Your Soil.

I strongly believe that a quality soil recipe makes all the difference in a garden.  Lets figure out how much soil you will need for your garden beds.
Remember, compost, peat moss and vermiculite (the 3 components of this recipe) are measured in cubic feet or cubic yards, so you will be given both of those numbers with the calculations. In my example (shown below), I am calculating a 4’x4? (or 48?x48?) raised bed that is 6? deep. As you can see in the picture above, for my 4’x4? bed that is 6? deep, I will need 8 cubic feet of soil. So lets use my example above to show you how this works. I needed 8 cubic feet of soil as shown in the soil calculator above.
Now follow the 3 easy steps below and you now know how to make garden soil for raised beds!
Now that you have all the ingredients, follow these 3 easy steps and you will know how to make garden soil for raised beds!
So as I mentioned above, I buy my compost in bulk and use it throughout the season. If you bought your compost in bulk and are unable to measure it by cubic feet or cubic yards, you can measure your formula this way.
Remember, compost is very heavy and weighs differently in volume, so this is why the formula is different. I just used a large green bucket and filled it up 3 times with compost, poured it into my raised bed, and then added 1 large green bucket of peat moss and 1 large green bucket of vermiculite. Here is what my 4’x4? square foot gardening bed looks like when it is done and ready to go!

Soil amendment can be as simple as mixing in leaf litter or it can be as complicated as running drainage pipes.
In most cases, the need for amending soil arises from having poor, compacted soil or nutrient deficient soil.
Dense, hard soil may be the result of construction or simply little ones running across it constantly in play. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches for most plants and up to 2 feet for trees and larger specimens. Garden soil preparation with these items works best if they are dug into the soil to a depth of 6 to 12 inches.
Acid and alkaline soils can be amended with lime to sweeten the soil and sulfur to increase the acidity.
The reason is that the hydroponic nutrients can more easily access the plant’s roots when they’re in water solution with growing media. Most destructive organism (weeds and almost all fungus) need soil in order to grow and flourish. If you have a soil garden and want to grow vegetables you must first assess the type of soil in your garden and use fertilizers to prepare and enrich the soil to make sure that you can successfully grow vegetables. All you need is prepare your water solution of water with the required nutrients for your herbs, plants and vegetables. We began backyard composting to produce our own organic black gold which increased our gardening success. I believe it is the most important part of gardening, along with water and sunlight, of course.
NicholsNotes is now offering a pre-publication copy of Appropriate God's Promises to our subscribers. Transplants insure a reliable plant population and, usually in the spring, produce earlier than crops planted from seed. Reliable production has been made possible by new hybrid varieties of vegetables which are earlier producers of larger yields.
Because most vegetable seeds are relatively small, they do not have sufficient emergence strength to push through deep soil. It is comprised of the following minerals: plagioclase, biotite and interstitial quartz and hornblende. Even if chemical fertilizers are a good short term solution, they become harmful in long term. This way, compacted soil is loosen, while water absorption and drainage are significantly improved. Legumes are the only plants able to capture nitrogen from the air and convert it into a benefit for other plants.
The explanation is that different plants have different nutritional needs, so they consume specific soil nutrients that must be regain afterwards. It is also an option for covering the ground in shady areas, especially under trees and shrubs, where grass doesn`t usually grow. Practically, this means that instead of turning the soil over to a depth of one spade, you turn it to a depth of two spades. There are compost tumblers that can transform yard and kitchen wastes into good dirt in just a few weeks. Sure you could do this, but you don’t have the necessary ingredients in the soil to nourish your plants, retain moisture and to allow for proper drainage. The number below that (cubic yards) is usually beneficial for filling larger beds and for buying soil for bulk delivery. Compost can be very dense and by adding peat moss, you lighten up the density which helps the root systems of the plants to grow more evenly throughout the soil. Now this is very serious, yes and every now and then the story pops up again, like it is new and just happened.

You might want to wear a mask because the vermiculite and peat moss can be dusty, and it is best to wear a mask. The soil will settle about 1-2 inches below where you originally piled the soil in so be sure to add a little extra to compensate for settling. If you are able, it is best to follow the recipe by cubic feet or cubic yards, but if you can not, then follow this method. I am moving into my first house in a couple weeks and plan on doing a big garden in the backyard.
Unless you drew the lucky card and have a garden full of black gold, you will need to know how to improve soil.
Organic matter is the best soil amendment because it breaks down naturally to release nutrients for plant uptake. This requires lots of space and relatively not cost effective to grow different vegetables throughout the year. It’s very easy to read the instructions on the packaging and get your own hydroponics garden up and running. The #3 is perfect for plants, but I mix it with my homemade compost to make it even richer. Jesus shared a parable about the importance of the soil and three of the Gospel writers recorded it for us (see Matthew 13, Mark 4, or Luke 8). Digging deeper into the parable, we realize the soil Jesus points to is a picture of our heart condition when it comes to receiving His Word. This free e-book catalogs 170+ Bible promises, and your copy is waiting along with a subscription to our blog posts. If two-thirds to three-quarters have germinated, plant the seed slightly thicker than recommended. Instead, organic materials are the most appropriate method to improve the structure and the fertility of the soil even if the results are not immediate. Don`t use lawn aerator shoes as they actually compact the soil due to the small size of the spikes. Straw is great mulch for vegetable gardens and it must be dug under after the harvest so that it can decompose during winter and enrich the soil for spring. Aeration and drainage are improved, particularly when combined with the raised bed technique of bed preparation. When done right, composting doesn`t smell and generates the best dirt for you to dig into your garden. Improving your garden soil is probably the most important step in grwoing a bgeautiful garden. In addition to this, I rarely have any problems with pest or any diseases harming the plants. This was a very serious situation indeed, but as a result vermiculite is screened for asbestos and is monitored on every level and also has a asbestos free stamp on the bags.
Improving garden soil is an ongoing process as the plants leach nutrients, leaving the soil inadequate for their needs. Compact or hard soils are actually great for starting a lawn, as long as you add a little sandy topsoil if starting from seed. If you have very deep, hard areas, you may have to rent equipment to dig it up and loosen it. Once the soil is loose, you may need to add several inches of compost or fine bark to keep it loose and workable. Cover crops provide “green manure” to work into soil in spring for an extra shot of nitrogen and increased soil percolation. When you add fertilizer and water to the soil, it takes time before the roots are able to absorb them. When I share a plant with fellow gardeners, they love the pot of dirt almost as much as the plant itself. This is best done by putting the towel in a sealed jar or plastic container and placing it in an area of the house with little temperature fluctuation.
Other legumes you can grow in your garden for nitrogen-fixing benefits are beans, peas and lupin flowers.
During the digging process, ad compost, rotted manure, leaf mold or other organic components that can enrich the garden soil. Called humus, final compost aerates clay soils, improves water retention in sandy ones while enhancing soil structure and fertility. If you can not find vermiculite, you can use perlite, but I prefer vermiculite…it is a much better product to work with. Whether your soil is nutrient deficient, compacted, heavy clay or any other issue, here’s a little soil amendment info to get you started. Plants like fruits and vegetables, however, need loose, nutrient rich soil with plenty of organic amendments added every year.
Do not use rocks, pebbles, bricks, pavement or other heavy materials because they compact the ground and do not provide organic materials. Compost is expensive by the bag, so if you are filling a large bed, or even a smaller bed, it is wise to buy it from a local source. There is no rule on the best soil for gardens, but there are some basic guidelines and some easy fixes.
