Editor’s Note: It all started on one rainy evening when I had a dinner date with my friend Liv, a professional makeup artist.
So asked Liv to enlighten us about what ingredients she considers toxic and should be avoid at all costs. Do you know what’s in your skin care or the amazing new makeup product or nail polish you just bought?

Many online shops have already done the hard work for you and you can buy products free of nasties from e.g. According to the American Thoracic Society, using conventional cleaners even once a week may increase the risk of developing adult asthma. Petroleum distillates, found in kitchen and furniture cleaners – can cause damage to the nervous system and lungs.
Triclosan, a synthetic toxic chemical compound added to many anti¬bacterial products and other household care products, may disrupt thyroid hormone function - it has also been linked to allergies and antibiotic resistance. Tests using lab animals have verified that exposure to large doses of triclosan can cause irreparable health damage, but industry representatives say that the levels found in consumer products are much too small to do so… even so, these cleansers seem to be a futile investment because research has shown that, in the home, antibacterial soap is no more effective than the regular stuff in preventing infection.
A new health study has found that e-cigarettes release toxic chemicals similar to those found in traditional tobacco cigarettes. The researchers exposed mice to e-cigarette vapor for two weeks, then exposed them to pneumonia bacteria or flu viruses. Researchers also found that e-cigarette vapor contained free radical toxins similar to those traditional cigarettes, but only at around 1% of the level.
Read on to learn what’s in those synthetic fragrances and the potential health hazards. BUT, while we might not know exactly what chemical concoction each specific fragrance contains, we do know that they all contain LOTS of chemicals that have either been associated with negative health effects OR haven’t been assessed for safety! In 2010, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent lab to analyze 17 popular, name-brand (including many celebrity-endorsed) fragrance products to determine the chemicals they contained. The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. The United States is far behind other industrialized countries when it comes to cosmetic safety. What’s the problem with these chemicals that are lurking in synthetic fragrances and getting into our bodies?

Preliminary research suggests that the synthetic musks (galaxolide and tonalide) are hormone disruptors — basically this means that they interfere with the normal functioning of hormones in the body.
Although some phthalates are being phased out of cosmetics due to consumer pressure (Yay!), diethyl phthalate (DEP) is still used in many products, including fragrances. Not only do many of these chemicals in fragrances disrupt our hormones, but they can also wreak havoc on our skin and lungs — they can cause contact dermatitis (a seriously red and itchy rash) or other allergic reactions like a headache or asthma. Natural Fragrance Alternatives: Avoiding chemical-laden perfumes doesn’t mean we have to forgo beautiful scents. Take a stand for your health! Of course just by choosing products without fragrance you not only help yourself and your family, but you also make a difference with your dollar – manufacturers will listen! I love that Bastyr University where I am attending school has a fragrance-free policy on campus! As a serious gym goer, and health freak in general, I didn’t realize that years of spraying this stuff was really messing with my hormones. I was prescribed an antibiotic for 6 months… and extended it to a year, because as soon as I got off it the acne would eventually come up again.
I'm Stephanie and I'm on a mission to spread awareness about health-harming toxins in our daily lives and easy ways to reduce them. I believe that healthy living doesn't have to be hard and that we can all take simple steps to create healthier lives for ourselves, our families and future generations.
To make it even easier for you, the amazing designer and  friend Valerie, created this infographic. SLS’s are known to be skin, lung, and eye irritants that can slow down the skins healing process. This ultimate result is premature aging and possibly other skin disorders such as contact dermatitis. It can cause eye, nose, throat irritation, asthma, potential effects on the reproductive and neurological systems. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database, fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, headache, dermatitis, hyperpigmentation, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. Also, it appears some sunscreens are not good for you either – check out full list here. I really enjoyed putting this article together and having such an amazing expert as Liv on board helped a lot to make it as informative as possible.
The study, published in the PLOS One journal, tested the effects of e-cigarette vapor on mice and found that the mice suffered mild lung damage and became more susceptible to respiratory infections. The researchers found that “e-cigarette vapor alone produced mild effects on the lungs, including inflammation and protein damage,” according to co-author Dr. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.
To date, the FDA has banned or restricted 11 chemicals for use in cosmetics, while 1,373 chemicals have been banned or restricted from cosmetics sold in the European Union. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), fragrance is the biggest cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis.
National Academy of Sciences identified fragrance ingredients as one of six categories of neurotoxins (chemicals that are toxic to the brain) that should be thoroughly investigated for impacts on human health.
I was quite an avid user of them, including scented moisturizers that you can in those scent gift packs (they often sell cheaper than just the cologne themselves)… it sounded like an awesome deal at the time. It only occurred to me after I investigated every part of my lifestyle to see what the root cause might me.

Wish it would be mandatory that they educate themselves …this is a great place to start!

It is also dangerous when in contact with the eyes. It stops your hair from growing properly by corroding the hair follicles when used in shampoo. Pin it, save it to desktop or your smartphone or, if you’re like me, an old-school print out. I only use 3-free and 5-free polishes (for a couple of years now) and I’ll be definitely using only natural beauty products from now and on. Lo Glow contained the most hormone disrupting chemicals of the fragrances tested, and Chanel, Halle by Halle Berry and American Eagle Seventy-Seven contained the most chemicals not assessed for safety by the government or other industry). If you are looking for a healthier scent option, try essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.
Maybe if they had their blood tested they would think twice about exposing themselves and others! It struck me that we buy all these expensive beauty products in the hope of looking younger, more glowing, blemish free etc but in fact we could be slathering our skin with toxins and cancer-causing chemicals.
We’re consumers and as such, we have the right to know how we can make informed choices that may help us to avoid health issues in the future. Because many beauty products that offer some kind of magical solution to your skin, hair or nail problems may in fact contain toxic ingredients that can cause negative long term effects. Parabens possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer and may cause fertility problems and disrupt the endocrine system. These include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies, and musk ketone, a synthetic fragrance ingredient that concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk. And the FDA does not systematically review the safety of cosmetic and fragrance ingredients. The FDA has still taken no action on a petition submitted to the agency in 1999 requesting that the ingredients in fragrances be listed on labels. But since you’re putting it on your skin, try to find pure organic therapeutic grade essential oils, which are free of synthetic fragrances and other chemicals. SLS has the potential to interact and combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen. Methylparaben applied on the skin reacts with UVB rays in the sun leading to increased skin aging and DNA damage.
The greatest concern is that these chemicals, through their ability to mimic or disrupt natural estrogen, testosterone and thyroid pathways in the body, may impair basic body functions.)  Not to mention that these musks have an environmental impact – they have been found to be toxic to aquatic life in numerous studies and can accumulate in the food chain. And a 2013 study even identified DEP as being associated with insulin resistance and oxidative damage in the elderly.
