Recently, while queuing up for a wholegrain, soft cheese & salad bagel at a well known organic eatery in Bali, I overheard the women in front of me complaining to her friend. Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic materials such as some fertilisers, pest controls and drugs.  In most countries there are strict standards which organic farmers have to meet in order to call their food organic. One of the biggest complaints about organic food is the cost.  So why does organic cost so much more?
The science shows that organic farms are superior to conventional farms for conserving soil quality and preserving the local environment (such as local water systems and animal habitats etc). A recent scientific analysis of organic farming methods looked at 71 studies which compared conventional and organic farms in Europe. They found that the ‘organic’ label was not a guarantee of an environmentally friendly product.
They also found that when environmental impact per product was considered, in many cases greenhouse gas emissions were higher in organic systems and so some conventional products had less of an overall environmental impact than their organic equivalents. As there was a wide variation in farm management practices across organic and conventional farms, researchers suggested that one of the biggest factors in ensuring the farms were environmentally friendly was the management of the farming practise themselves – not whether the farm had organic certification or not.
And they are right, organic produce has been shown to have lower levels of synthetic pesticides than conventional farmed foods.  So by buying organic you will expose yourself to less synthetic pesticide. However, it’s worth knowing that organic farmers still use ‘natural’ pesticides – and natural, does not mean safe! Despite their high cost, if you are an adult making choices for your health there is little nutritional difference between organic and conventionally produced food. The most recent review on this topic by Stanford researchers included 237 studies and found no significant difference in the nutrient content between organic and conventionally produced food (the only nutrient which was significantly higher in organic foods was phosphorous and as very few people have sub-optimal intake of this nutrient, researchers deemed it clinically insignificant).  Again, researchers noted farming methods and location were likely to have more of an effect on the nutritional quality of the foods due to natural variations in the soil and the type and quality of manure used to farm them.
As for taste, despite anecdotal claims of organic produce being tastier, in blind taste tests people have been unable to tell the difference between organic and non -organic produce. A healthy, balanced and varied diet wins my vote every time, (funny that my doctor thinks so to?) There are far too many people on this planet for whom the debate on Organic -V- Conventional is not one they will be taking part in any time soon. Great article Helen, definitely agree people need to concentrate on upping their fruit and veg intake. Thats a great point Lauren – Organic Certification is expensive for small local farms who often use good sustainable farming practices. Great post Helen – completely agree the focus should be on the balance of the diet overall and upping our fruit and veg intake rather than worrying about the nutrient content of individual foods (although it seems that organic produce doesnt score higher in this respect anyway). I have seen various articles that show the output of the land for organics is similar and at time superior to conventional so I do think propoganda from both sides plays a role in this argument. I am also a fan of protecting our environment and natural resources, shopping local and supporting small independents, even if that means paying a little more.
From a fruit and veg perspective I buy organic as much as possible and honestly find it to be often comparable to the prices in the supermarket. I work in promoting non- chemical products in farming (Freindly fungi and bacteria) but like most agriculturalists I absolutely do not support organic farming.
Welcome to my blog Food & Nonsense where I share my thoughts on nutrition related issues, my exercising ups and downs and my never ending quest to eat my way around the world. Ever wonder if you’re doing the right thing by paying higher costs and eating organic food? Pesticides are intense chemicals  sprayed on fruits and vegetables in order to bugs, rodents, weeds, and fungus. Pesticides are linked to increased risk of cancer, neurological defects, birth defects, and impaired fertility. In fact, on average, about 3 million farm hands in modernized economies experience severe poisoning effects each year. The Manipulation of crops, known as GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), is a sort of strange Frankenstein method of crossing genes together in order to provide a plant with certain qualities it wouldn’t have otherwise.
This includes resistance to certain diseases, insects, faster ripening, more vitamins, and most common- the ability to resist the pesticides that are poured on them.
The bacteria in your gut directly creates it’s DNA from the food you eat…so do you really feel comfortable eating something generated in a laboratory? Organic food may be crossbred, but this is a far more natural process than a laboratory setting. The use of pesticides, and nature’s reaction to them, requires that we make increasingly powerful concoctions to harm other things that eat our food, because they adapt. This rampant use of increasingly powerful toxins has killed massive colonies of honey bees, endangering the ability of plants to reproduce via pollen. Furthermore, genetic manipulation (GMO) has created forms of crops that literally cannot reproduce without artificial stimulation; this means that farmers become dependent on biotech companies, making it impossible for farmers to save seeds and replant crops. Matt is the content manager of the Sivana blog, an enthusiastic Yoga teacher, and life voyager. Are you interested in receiving emails including promotions and updates from our store as well? As an organic food blogger and someone who is very passionate about organic, I am going to be biased about organic food, which should not come as a surprise to anyone. Organic food does not allow food to be grown with toxic pesticides, genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), or synthetic growth hormones. There are two primary factors when deciding to buy organic: affordability and accessibility. If I can purchase local and organic, that is absolutely what I try to do (See my post Organic vs.
Without a question, organic farming is much better for the environment than conventional farming. Not only does it practice crop rotation, but organic farming is not poisoning the water supply, damaging the soil quality, or negatively impacting biodiversity because it doesn’t use super-toxic pesticides, chemicals widely used on GMOs. Additionally, the workers are not getting sick from exposure to toxic chemicals sprayed on the crops.
While it is very far from perfect, I believe in supporting the USDA organic program and the companies that go through the time and expense to get USDA certified organic. The more people we have involved in the program and purchasing products with the USDA seal, the greater chance we have to make sure that its integrity is maintained. According to the President’s Cancer Panel report, 41% of Americans will get cancer and 21% of Americans will die from it.
The report also said that “the true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated. The American Academy of Pediatrics shares similar concerns and says that pesticide exposure for children must be reduced. You should be eating as much organic as you can, based on how much you can afford and how much is accessible to you. 1) KIDS  I firmly believe that organic for children is much more important than it is for adults because their bodies are still developing, and pesticides and synthetic grown hormones may cause real harm.
In laboratory tests, we know that rats fed GMO-corn experienced serious liver and kidney damage. Fruits and vegetables where you eat the skin, such as grapes, strawberries and spinach, are the foods that should be purchased organic. Also, do not be fooled into thinking that you can buy a fruit and vegetable wash, even the best one on the market by Vermont Soap Organics, and believe that you can simply wash off pesticides from conventionally-grown produce. I hear all of the time that eating conventional bananas is totally fine, and I couldn’t disagree more. I have visited banana plantations in Central America, and they showed me first-hand how conventional bananas get lathered with chemicals.
6) CLEAN 15  The same people who put out the Dirty Dozen, the Environmental Working Group, also publish the Clean 15, a list of the least sprayed fruits and vegetables. Two, a few items on the Clean 15, such as papaya and sweet corn should definitely be purchased organic. Papaya grown in Hawaii is genetically-modified and Monsanto will be selling its genetically-modified sweet corn at a Wal-Mart near you this summer.
SIDE NOTE: AVOID GENETICALLY-MODIFIED FOODS  On a separate but very related note, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you ever eat genetically-modified foods. Click HERE to read the 65 different health risks for consuming GMOs, including liver damage, kidney damage, organ failure, testicular irregularities and many, many others.
Below is a video a I shot several years ago with Joel Salatin, one of the stars of the movie Food, Inc., on the high cost of organic food. To join this list, enter your email below and I’ll send you my Top 5 Inexpensive Ways to Shop Organic. It’s nice to know that other people out there are as passionate about organics as I am. I think that the more we talk about these things, the more they become part of the general conversation about food, health, ecology and sustainability. Would love to see Whole Foods put an organic foods store in Surprise, Arizona where I live.
Eating seasonally is another great way to get the freshest foods at the most affordable price.
I have local organic vegetables delivered to my door each week; however, I still love going to the local farmers markets.
Bottom line is buy from a local and trusted source when possible, and Think about Sustainability. From what I hear, a lot of farmers are switching to non-GMO and we are losing a lot of organic farmland as a result. Great article … except for one part, the part about buying organic milk … why the heck are you recommending buying milk at all?? These huge organic farms also grow monocrops which deplete the soil and create some environmental issues. I’m a regular person who decided to take his physical and mental health into his own hands. Fruits, vegetables and even meat that's raised using conventional methods are exposed to various chemicals and toxins. Traditional gardening and farming methods often call for toxic chemicals to kills weeds in gardens and in fields.
Some farm animals are given antibiotics, wormers and other medicines routinely to help ward off disease. Organic gardening and farming calls for natural methods of raising animals, getting rid of weeds, and keeping harmful insects away.
Research suggests that eating organic foods does indeed lower the level of certain chemicals in your body. For example, in 2006 researchers measured the amount of organophosphorus pesticide exposure in nearly two dozen school children while these kids ate a conventional diet.
If you're trying to eat clean and maintain a healthy lifestyle, then obviously you want to reduce or eliminate your exposure to toxins and other chemicals whenever possible.
However, here's a question you need to ask yourself: When do the health issues warrant the extra cost and effort of buying or even growing organic food?
If your marketplace is like a lot of marketplaces I see, then the organic food tends to be considerably more expensive than the traditionally grown food.
Now if you're not having any of obvious training or health issues - and if extra time and cost are factors you need to consider - then I suggest that you compromise by switching to a partly organic diet. If you're like most bodybuilders and fitness buffs, you probably eat a lot of eggs (especially egg whites). These thin skins (like on apples) don't offer the fruit much protection from pesticides. Same goes for vegetables like peppers, whose outer layer doesn't do enough to protect the insides from pesticides.
If lettuce or other leafy greens develop a pesticide problem, many traditional gardeners dump some of the most toxic pesticides on these greens to get rid of the pests. Here's another staple food (often in the form of oatmeal) for bodybuilders and other fitness enthusiasts. Belinda is an international fitness model, sports and health writer, personal trainer and author of the Get Lean Program. Given all the research about pesticide dangers and diseases it has been attributed to such as Parkinson’s it  still amazes me that foods grown with chemicals still make up the vast majority of foods consumed. Just this week 3 new studies came out that looked at the effect of pesticides on children IQ while they were in utero.
Prenatal exposure to pesticides in the womb were associated with lower IQ scores at 7 years old in California farm workers. Measuring umbilical cord blood researches showed clear correlation between the amount of a common agricultural pesticide and a lower IQ score at 7 years of age. New York City children exposed to organophosphates in the womb negatively impacted cognitive development and reasoning up to 9 years of age. In addition also released this week was a study that concluded Russian boys exposed to dioxins pre-puberty showed a delay in puberty and testicular maturation. Can someone please give me an answer as to why one would want to eat non-organic food during pregnancy?   (The only people I can think that can would be ones in poverty and relying on subsidies for food.)  You get what you pay for and  the evidence that organic food is superior is clear. We offer many individualized treatment modalities: Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Pancha Karma , Psychosomatic Energetics , Functional Nutrition and Chinese Herbal Medicine to treat a wide range of chronic and acute conditions. The notion of modern organic farming began in the 1960s and 1970s, spurred by an increase in public awareness of the hazards of farm production and the use of synthetic chemicals, according to Brian Baker of the Organic Materials Review Institute.
Organic foods, those produced with little or no exposure to synthetic substances, have become a popular alternative to conventional produce, grain, meat and dairy products. Organic food producers employ practices that promote environmental conservation and reduce pollution. To receive a USDA organic certification, meat producers must first submit to the USDA their plan for organic production.
Organic food production methods are more expensive for farmers, and the cost is passed on to the consumer, according to the Mayo Clinic. The primary difference between organic and nonorganic meat is the conditions under which the animal is raised.

Under the premise of organic beef production, all livestock require provisions that adequately meet their health and behavioral needs. An animal raised for organic beef purposes must be born to a mother fed an exclusive organic diet at the very latest during her third trimester, if not before, according to Idaho Land and Livestock.
Chicks destined for organic labeling must be raised according to National Organic Program standards from the time they are two-days-old, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University released a study that compared the protein content, among other things, of organic, free-range and conventional broiler chickens. In the same study, released by Iowa State University, the levels of various fat types were measured and compared between organic, free-range and conventional broiler chickens. According to the FDA, there is new evidence that the antibiotics in poultry are causing antibiotic-resistant infections in an increased number of consumers. USDA accredited agents certify and annually inspect all farms that raise livestock with the intent of selling their products as organic. Producers bring pigs in their last third of gestation to their certified organic farms and raise the offspring for the production of organic pork. In order to be classified as organic, fruits and vegetables must be grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Organic vegetables are grown, handled and processed differently from traditionally grown fruits and vegetables. Pesticides sprayed on conventionally grown fruits and vegetables leave residues behind, which we ingest. Conventional agriculture employs pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilizers to significantly increase its yields. Farmers tend to use pesticides to save their leafy vegetable crops from various bugs and insects.
Celery has no protective skin, which makes it almost impossible to wash off chemicals used on conventional crops. Domestic cherries contain a particularly high level of pesticide residue compared with imported cherries. Conventionally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs are treated with pesticides and herbicides to kill and repel pests such as insects, rodents and fungi that affect farmer’s crops and profitability.
PCP is a herbicide used to treat cotton, as a pesticide to prevent fungi from rotting and insects from eating wood. Chlorophenoxy is a herbicide that, according to the Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health, is toxic and can cause vomiting, confusion, renal failure and irregular heartbeat. Dalapon is a selective herbicide that kills grasses and weeds and leaves farmer’s crops intact. Endosulfan kills insects that attack plants such as coffee and tea, as well as grains, vegetables and fruits. The endocrine system is a messaging system that uses hormones and the bloodstream to convey responses throughout the body. Many studies of pesticides and herbicides have been performed on the workers and handlers of these chemicals, such as farmers and their families.
According to the Global Healing Center, several studies have shown that pesticides alter the immune system in animals and make them more susceptible to disease.
The diversity of pesticides and the way that each person metabolizes them may shed light on their diverse actions and detrimental effects in the body. It’s not difficult to realize that if you apply a product intended to kill, there can be risks if it is misused or if humans come in contact with it. The most significant harmful effects come from fertilizer that is designed to kill or prevent weeds. The need to live and adopt a healthier lifestyle has resulted in consumers shifting to organic foods.
Farmers have been known to use a combination of pesticides and chemicals to boost productivity in their farms. Most people opt for organic food because of the health benefits associated with these foods. In fact, in the UK you can expect to pay up to 3 times more for certified organic produce with similar figures been reported in the US and Australia. In the UK this means that in order to certify and label your food as organic, over 95% of the ingredients must be organically produced in line with European Union standards.
They proposed that we look beyond the organic vs conventional farming debate, away from absolutes and towards an amalgamation of farming practices which would protect the environment and produce high farm yields. If I have questions I can ask the farmer right there as opposed to calling up the 1-800 number on the label. I totally get what you mean – I am the same when I am shopping at home and had intended to include a section on animal welfare in this post but I ran out of time – I might have to do a part 2! There are discount places outside of where I live which often have great bargains but if we look at accessibility without a car people where I live would not be able to access them and therefore are forced to shop at the big 2. The comparison though should not be between organic and conventional farming, but between conventional and best-practice farming. But I definitely would buy a non organic local item over a non local organic one because of the environment. He strives to inspire conscious living and conscious dialogue- not only for others but for himself. One of the report’s key recommendations is to eat food that has been grown without the use of pesticides. It stated that “epidemiologic evidence demonstrates associations between early life exposure to pesticides and pediatric cancers, decreased cognitive function, and behavioral problems. What he says at the end of the video is his best point – it is all about our priorities and the choices that we make in life. 98% of my post on facebook are regarding organic food but the other random 2% I post get more attention than anything else and it drives me crazy. I would also like them to stock the whole line of Vivpaura superfoods and also the Ojio brand of organic chocolate bars made with other organic superfoods and herbs.
Non-GMO means no GMOs but it sill allows for heavy pesticide use, which is incredibly problematic. Although eating organic can cost more MONEY, NOT eating organic will cost you more in health issues.Thank you for all the information on eating organic.
Not eating organic will save you money in the short-run but definitely not in the long-term. Given this reality, it is essential that families who are buying milk are purchasing milk that is organic and hormone-free. I am all for supporting the local economy but far too often people equate local with organic, and the two are just not the same.
If you're curious about what eating organic can do for your body and health then read on and see!
While the directions on most weed killers suggest that users not apply the herbicide for so many days or weeks before harvesting the fruit or vegetable, some residue may remain on the edible item. While the amount of pesticide (or herbicide) on one piece of fruit or one vegetable is unlikely to harm you, the concern is that these toxins build up in the body over time. Some of these medications and toxins may be present in the meat when the animal is slaughtered. And while organic farmers and gardeners do on occasion use pesticides to kill harmful pests, these pesticides aren't synthetic. The researchers then measured the pesticide levels in these children after switching them to an organic diet. After all, fewer toxins means the body functions better for health, fitness, and general well-being. And if you live in a small community, you may have to drive some distance just to find organic foods. This means making a list of the foods you eat the most and buying those particular foods from organic sources. And that means switching to organic eggs should help you reduce the levels of hormones and antibiotics you ingest. If the Holstein was injected with antibiotics for a mastitis infection, that chemical may have seeped into your milk. However, it's also an individual decision where you need to take into account the extra cost and effort required to get these items into your home. A recent study showed that the new class of pesticides called pyrethroid (supposedly safer) negatively affects neurological development of toddlers at 3 years. Lawmakers began to regulate the use of synthetic chemicals, and consumers started to demand food produced using traditional farming methods.
Organic farmers avoid the use of most pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetic engineering, ionizing radiation and sewage sludge, according to the U.S. To qualify their livestock or poultry as organic, farmers must refrain from using animal byproducts as feed. Organic living conditions include shelter, plenty of room to exercise and roam fresh water, fresh air and bright-green pastures.
They are provided with clean drinking water and enough food for flocks to eat simultaneously without competition, according to USDA regulations.
An analysis of the various types of raw chicken breast showed that the organic sample contained only slightly more protein than the free-range chicken.
The study analyzed samples of raw chicken breast and discovered that the fat content varied greatly among the different samples. For example, fluoroquinolone is an antibiotic that is commonly given to chickens and turkeys if a single bird in the flock is diagnosed with E. According to the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, in 2008 the leading state with 32 certified organic hog farms was Wisconsin. Farmers who grow organic fruits and vegetables adhere to strict government standards set by the U.S. Unlike conventional farming, organic farming uses no chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers. Many years of pesticide exposure leads to the accumulation of pesticides in our bodies, which causes headaches and puts strain on our immune system, according to Helpguide.org. Conventional growers around the world use so many chemicals that herbicides and pesticides are commonly found in rainwater. After a high-powered wash, these fruits and vegetables still tested positive for between 47 and 67 different chemicals. In some cases, this is because the fruit or vegetable in question has a thick skin or husk protecting the edible portion from chemical exposure. The Environmental Protection Agency sets limits on tolerable levels of pesticide residue on produce. Spinach may contain as many as 48 different pesticides, making it one of the most contaminated green leafy vegetables. Alternative root vegetables that do not need to be bought organic include radishes and onions because they have tough skins.
The laboratory tests for the Dirty Dozen found that strawberries contained 59 pesticide chemical types.
Instead of peeling apples, opt for purchasing the organic variety to avoid the 42 pesticide chemicals found in non-organic apples. Purchase organic cherries to avoid the chemicals and benefit from their qualities, such as vitamin C and fiber. Buying organic pears is particularly important for pregnant and breastfeeding women, because pesticides interfere with normal growth and development. The USDA pasteurization laws require nut growers and processors to steam-heat raw almonds to pasteurize them.
Studies at Cornell University indicate chronic toxicity in rats from long term, small doses of phosmet.
It is toxic for human consumption and can enter the body through skin contact, causing irritation and in severe cases death. Food and Drug Administration released a report on pesticides and found that acephate was detectable and found in food sold for human consumption, according to the website True Health. It is highly toxic for humans when ingested or absorbed through the skin, and can cause liver problems, reduced growth rates and seizures. Petroleum, as a fat-soluble substance, has long-term effects in the body because it remains in fat-laden tissues, like the brain and adipose cells, for a long period of time. However, a 2010 Organic Consumers Association article by Dan Sharpley notes that a specialized type of cancer known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia is assumed to be directly linked to pesticide exposure in a normal, non-agriculture setting.
Exposure to these pesticides has also been linked to behavior and learning problems in children. According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, signs of an affected nervous system include excess salivation, stomach pain, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea.
Pesticides have been found to reduce the numbers of white blood cells and disease-fighting lymphocytes, making their bodies unable to kill bacteria and viruses. According to the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs, 12 of the most popular pesticides in the United States have ingredients known to cause cancer.
Organic foods are a healthier choice because unlike conventional foods, they are free from chemicals and toxic pesticides used in farming. These processed food can weaken your child’s immune system, resulting in more allergies and hyperactivity. Furthermore, organic foods are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, making these products a better option for both you and your family. Organic fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients that help cleanse and detoxify your body. We can double production while reducing chemicals and environmental impacts substantially, this blog shows how organic farming crowds out intelligent debate about better and more sustainable agriculture. That, just in it’s simplicity, is a powerful argument for going as organic as possible.

So, if you are eating any of the above (in most processed, conventional foods), you are almost guaranteed to be eating GMOs.
I learned that recently when I was retiring from the board at my church–so many people said they had changed their way of doing things since I started beating the sustainability drum. We have encountered resistance from family (BIG resistance), but hold firm to our principles for health and the planet. Along this same line, I believe based on facts that I researched that we can feed the entire population with organically and biodynamically grown foods. Beyond the infancy age that is from our mothers, and certainly not milk from other species.
It’s my experience that it costs about 10-15% more but the added expense is well worth it. It seems the local versus organic debate is a personal one often based on the primary motivating interests of health or economy. For example, organic gardeners often introduce pyrethrin to kill pests, which is the residue from a special type of chrysanthemum plant.
If so, switch to an organic diet for six weeks and see if it makes a difference to your overall well being. If you have health issues, you can try switching to an organic diet and monitor the results.
And a couple of months ago a study showed that certain pesticides are anti-androgenic and may delay or inhibit a boys development during puberty. Some states and organizations began to create their own standards for organic food production in the 1970s. You can identify organic foods by the USDA Organic Seal that appears on, or on a sign near, certified products. Organic farmers do not use waxes, preservatives or unnatural means of producing large, attractive produce.
Conventionally raised animals are often fed the rendered remains of horses, pigs, chicken and cattle. The Organic Trade Association also says that all organic livestock require feed that is 100% organic. Livestock can neither consume a plastic pellet diet, nor feed on formulas that contain manure or urea. So, livestock raised for organic purposes must receive a diet that adheres to their natural tendencies. However, the organic chicken sample contained over 1 percent more protein than the chicken that was raised by conventional methods. The levels of saturated fat, also known as bad fat, were lowest in the organic chicken and similar between the free-range and conventional chicken samples. These farms follow an organic production system that documents and monitors all practices of the farm, including the origin and use of all substances and management practices that prevent the mixing of organic and non-organic materials and products. The diets of organically raised pigs are also free of antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified grains, animal by-products, chemically extracted feed, drugs or synthetic amino acids. The United States Department of Agriculture reported in 2010 that the demand for organic products has increased every year since 1998. Organic farming limits pollution, conserves water, reduces soil erosion and increases soil fertility. The Environmental Protection Agency notes that 90 percent of fungicides, 30 percent of insecticides and 60 percent of herbicides are carcinogenic. If you eat five conventionally grown fruits and vegetables from this list each day, you will consume, on average, 10 different pesticides per day. Between 2004 and 2006, the Food and Drug Administration tested 2,243 domestic samples and 4,870 imported samples for pesticide residue, a tiny percentage of the total sold.
Although the nutmeat or seed is protected by a shell or fruit, unless they are raised organically they are treated with synthetic chemicals just as other non-organic crops. If you want raw organic almonds, you can still buy unpasteurized almonds in person, directly from the grower. It is highly toxic to humans and animals, and washes into waterways where it harms aquatic life.
A two-year mouse study showed increased liver tumors and carcinoma, and the pesticide is considered a category C carcinogen. Food grown using them contains a trace of their chemicals that can get into your bloodstream, such as the case with Pentachlorophenol or PCP, according to the University of California Davis Environmental Toxicology Department. Herbicides are believed to present a bigger threat because they are highly concentrated in the water supply, due to runoff from agricultural use. Dalapon in toxic to humans and can cause burns if it comes in direct contact with the skin.
Acephate is used to control aphids and insects that invade vegetables such as potatoes and beets, as well as fruit. It comes as an emulsifiable concentrate, ultra-low volume (ULV) liquid, wettable powder and smoke tablets. The action of these chemicals has been described as able to mimic the effects of human estrogen or testosterone; additionally, they are disruptive to the synthesis and breakdown of both estrogen and testosterone. Children are noted by the Pesticide Action Network to be at a higher risk for brain development and functional issues associated with pesticides, due to a higher consumption by children of such chemicals. They add that pesticides are not directly causative and that genetic susceptibility also plays a role.
The most pesticides are found on celery, peaches, berries, apples, peppers, greens, grapes and potatoes. According to the GHC, they also affect the development of the spleen and thymus and spleen, two immune organs. Outside of their major effects on the endocrine system and their role in inducing neurological issues and childhood cancers, the site lists other non-specific effects of ingestion as eye, liver, kidney or spleen problems. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pesticides require regulation due to possible human health effects including skin irritation, disorders of the nervous system and possible carcinogenic properties. When you as a consumer stops ingesting food filled with chemicals, your immunity strengthens and you will have a  healthier body. I also prefer to buy produce local (organic or not) because it’s local, more sustainable, and often organic.
I try to buy organic eggs, dairy products and meat as it makes me feel more at ease that the organic standards are generally higher. However, the cost of all 3 of the afore mentioned is expensive and so I totally understand why people would chose cheapest option every time. None the less I will keep liking and reposting until my thumbs fall off, maybe them people will start to pay attention, lol. This is a good article for most people to read, but seriously flawed due to that one statement.
Otherwise, you can find a balance between good health and a happy bank account by switching to organic only on those foods you eat the most.
The farm crisis of the 1980s led some farmers to transition to organic practices, and in the late 1980s there was an increasing demand for organic products. Organic farmers who raise livestock feed the animal’s organic food, do not give them antibiotics or growth hormones and allow them to have access to the outdoors. This means that some organic produce may look less attractive than conventional produce, and it might also spoil faster. Animals that die of disease are sometimes ground into feed, spreading diseases to animals that eat this cheap protein source. The cooked chicken breast analysis yielded that the organic sample contained almost a quarter of a percent more protein than the free-range chicken breast, and more than 1.5 percent more protein than the conventional chicken breast. The levels of polyunsaturated fat, the good fat, were considerably higher in the organic chicken sample than the other two chickens. Most synthetic products are prohibited, except for some vaccinations, medications, vitamins and mineral supplements. Natural fertilizers such as manure and compost encourage the growth of organic vegetables, while techniques including mulching, tilling, hand weeding and crop rotation control weeds.
Unborn babies and children have underdeveloped immune systems and increased sensitivity to the effects of pesticides.
The list includes celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, domestic blueberries, nectarines, sweet bell peppers, spinach, kale, collard greens, cherries, potatoes, imported grapes and lettuce.
The list includes onions, avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, mango, sweet peas, asparagus, kiwi, cabbage, eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potatoes and sweet onions. They reported illegal pesticides in 2 percent of domestic samples and 6 percent of imported samples.
Endosulfan is a hazard to farm workers as well as people who live near farms where it is used.
The prevalent exposure of the world’s populations to these substances has caused concern over their potential health consequences. According to the University of California Davis Environmental Toxicology Department, exposure to acephate can cause heart block, central nervous system impairment, heartburn, chest tightness, pulmonary edema and death because of respiratory failure. The major endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries and testes. It has been found that animals and humans exposed to these chemicals in the womb are at a high risk of developing deformed reproductive anatomies, defects or alterations in sexual behavior, sperm counts, metabolism and brain development. The article notes that, when comparing food and air consumption on a pound to pound basis in children versus adults, children are more greatly exposed to environmental pesticides and herbicides.
They additionally describe anemia, cardiovascular, stomach and intestinal problems as related to pesticide exposure.
Both website are dedicated to educating and informing people with articles on powerful and concealed information from around the world.
Free-trade organic free-range wouldn’t even my thoughts if it ever meant my children going without a decent meal. It made me get all teary and full of gratitude to hear that what I had been saying had actually helped people make positive changes in their lives. Organic farmers rely on natural fertilizers, beneficial insects and birds, crop rotation, rotational grazing and other natural methods of reducing pests and promoting the health of plants and animals. If a product contains the phrase “Made with Organic Ingredients,” it is made with at least 70 percent organic ingredients, according to the USDA. Producers that sell less than $5,000 per year in products may be exempt from certification but may not use the USDA organic labeling on their products, according to the USDA National Organic Program. In fact, organically-raised cattle eat grass from the day they are born up until the time of slaughter.
