Recently, while queuing up for a wholegrain, soft cheese & salad bagel at a well known organic eatery in Bali, I overheard the women in front of me complaining to her friend. Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic materials such as some fertilisers, pest controls and drugs.  In most countries there are strict standards which organic farmers have to meet in order to call their food organic. One of the biggest complaints about organic food is the cost.  So why does organic cost so much more?
The science shows that organic farms are superior to conventional farms for conserving soil quality and preserving the local environment (such as local water systems and animal habitats etc). A recent scientific analysis of organic farming methods looked at 71 studies which compared conventional and organic farms in Europe. They found that the ‘organic’ label was not a guarantee of an environmentally friendly product.
They also found that when environmental impact per product was considered, in many cases greenhouse gas emissions were higher in organic systems and so some conventional products had less of an overall environmental impact than their organic equivalents. As there was a wide variation in farm management practices across organic and conventional farms, researchers suggested that one of the biggest factors in ensuring the farms were environmentally friendly was the management of the farming practise themselves – not whether the farm had organic certification or not.
And they are right, organic produce has been shown to have lower levels of synthetic pesticides than conventional farmed foods.  So by buying organic you will expose yourself to less synthetic pesticide. However, it’s worth knowing that organic farmers still use ‘natural’ pesticides – and natural, does not mean safe! Despite their high cost, if you are an adult making choices for your health there is little nutritional difference between organic and conventionally produced food. The most recent review on this topic by Stanford researchers included 237 studies and found no significant difference in the nutrient content between organic and conventionally produced food (the only nutrient which was significantly higher in organic foods was phosphorous and as very few people have sub-optimal intake of this nutrient, researchers deemed it clinically insignificant).  Again, researchers noted farming methods and location were likely to have more of an effect on the nutritional quality of the foods due to natural variations in the soil and the type and quality of manure used to farm them.
As for taste, despite anecdotal claims of organic produce being tastier, in blind taste tests people have been unable to tell the difference between organic and non -organic produce. A healthy, balanced and varied diet wins my vote every time, (funny that my doctor thinks so to?) There are far too many people on this planet for whom the debate on Organic -V- Conventional is not one they will be taking part in any time soon. Thats a great point Lauren – Organic Certification is expensive for small local farms who often use good sustainable farming practices. Great post Helen – completely agree the focus should be on the balance of the diet overall and upping our fruit and veg intake rather than worrying about the nutrient content of individual foods (although it seems that organic produce doesnt score higher in this respect anyway). I have seen various articles that show the output of the land for organics is similar and at time superior to conventional so I do think propoganda from both sides plays a role in this argument. I am also a fan of protecting our environment and natural resources, shopping local and supporting small independents, even if that means paying a little more.
From a fruit and veg perspective I buy organic as much as possible and honestly find it to be often comparable to the prices in the supermarket. I work in promoting non- chemical products in farming (Freindly fungi and bacteria) but like most agriculturalists I absolutely do not support organic farming.

The Manipulation of crops, known as GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), is a sort of strange Frankenstein method of crossing genes together in order to provide a plant with certain qualities it wouldn’t have otherwise.
This includes resistance to certain diseases, insects, faster ripening, more vitamins, and most common- the ability to resist the pesticides that are poured on them.

Organic food may be crossbred, but this is a far more natural process than a laboratory setting. The more people we have involved in the program and purchasing products with the USDA seal, the greater chance we have to make sure that its integrity is maintained. The American Academy of Pediatrics shares similar concerns and says that pesticide exposure for children must be reduced. I hear all of the time that eating conventional bananas is totally fine, and I couldn’t disagree more. I have visited banana plantations in Central America, and they showed me first-hand how conventional bananas get lathered with chemicals.

From what I hear, a lot of farmers are switching to non-GMO and we are losing a lot of organic farmland as a result. Not eating organic will save you money in the short-run but definitely not in the long-term. Given this reality, it is essential that families who are buying milk are purchasing milk that is organic and hormone-free. Organic foods are a healthier choice because unlike conventional foods, they are free from chemicals and toxic pesticides used in farming. These processed food can weaken your child’s immune system, resulting in more allergies and hyperactivity. Furthermore, organic foods are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, making these products a better option for both you and your family. So, if you are eating any of the above (in most processed, conventional foods), you are almost guaranteed to be eating GMOs.

If you eat five conventionally grown fruits and vegetables from this list each day, you will consume, on average, 10 different pesticides per day. Between 2004 and 2006, the Food and Drug Administration tested 2,243 domestic samples and 4,870 imported samples for pesticide residue, a tiny percentage of the total sold.
