There are many types of kibble available on the market ranging from low-quality to high-quality.  If choosing kibble, select the highest quality food allowed by your budget. Most brands offer the raw food in either a patty for medium to large dogs or medallions for smaller dogs.
Ive made more trips than I can count to the pet store with people just to show them how to read dog food labels, which was after I gave my speech on how incorporating as much whole food as possible would provide huge benefits to their dogs health. It’s a subject that can never be talked about too much as there are new dog owners born everyday!
Kimberly, The Fur Mom recently posted..How to Avoid Getting Your Head Bitten Off By the Dog Owner!!
I agree that risks exist (some of which can be controlled) when feeding raw, and I wonder whether the benefits outweigh the risks or if there even is a benefit to eating raw.
Does the answer lie in the argument that dogs are pure carnivores, and should have a diet in line with their ancestor, the wolf? Enter this article(1) in the journal Nature where many more genes were found in dogs than wolves that are involved with starch metabolism. In my years as a behaviorist I have come across a lot of cases where they were either sick, lethargic , have excessive levels of energy, being unruly or even destructive.
We all know and recognize that as people if we feel a lot better in ourselves, more satisfied and healthy when we have eaten good fulfilling healthy meals than if we have a diet of unhealthier food, yes it fulfils our need to eat but that is about it, we generally just feel full and bloated. Their food is totally 100% natural, there are no additives or artificial coloring in it, no added wheat, just prime human grade quality meat, not the left overs or offal from low quality animal grade meat.
If you want to look at giving your dog a more natural and healthy diet, please take a look at their product range.

Try to imagine being your dog, how would you feel about eating dry dog food day in and day out. The above list is just a sample of the more than 29 additives available to make dry dog foods and canned commercial pet food palatable enough for your dog to eat. Open that sack of dry foul smelling kibble and ask yourself if it smells good and nutritious? While your dog may well woof it down having been fooled by the scientists, is that any reason to continue feeding your dog junk nutrition-less pet food?
The sludge stuck in your dog’s teeth from pieces of kibble sits there causing plaque build up until eventually calculus is formed, leading eventually to gingivitis and onto periodontal disease and a very grumpy unhappy dog that cannot tell you just how miserable she feels each day.
In time this poisonous cycle will lead to immune system breakdown and devastating consequences for your dog. Second, open up your dog’s mouth and have a good look at her teeth.  Are they nice and shiny white with salmon pink gums? Hopefully now your starting to understand the results of feeding dry dog food to your best friend. Historically dogs are predators and have thrived eating raw meat and bones for millions of years, it’s their biological diet and contains all the naturally occurring ingredients your dog would need for optimum health. The modern day culture of feeding convenience food from cans and packets changes nothing when it comes to your dog’s biology. You might think the comparison is skewed somewhat but in reality the fries may well be better nutrition than dry dog food. Raw dog food diets, either the ones you make up yourself at home or the pre-made commercial ones you buy at the pet store or online are like the Cesar salad. The truth is dogs have no real need for carbohydrates; their liver derives its energy from the proteins in meat and bone.
Human grade ingredients mean you get food you can trust instead of pieces and parts of rendered dead animals that often do not include any actual meat at all. If we re-visit the dog breath test, a dog fed naturally will have sweet breath and white teeth with pink gums.  This is the test of diet, of health and of how well your dog will live going forward. I have had several dogs and a few cats, and I have seen how the Raw Diet is way better than the commercial crap diet (no pun intended). Animals fed raw meat and bones ARE 78-100% healthier, all health issues (even genetic ones) become significantly reduced to non-existent! I read that pet food manufacturing companies that sell pet foods which are distributed and sold in cans, rely on the sterility of the can to protect them from spoilage in deterioration of the ingredients. Hi Jerry, great question, the canned food may well be safer to feed as the bagged kibble gives rise to afflatoxins and degrades over the month as the bag empties. I like the part about imagining you are your dog and eating what they eat everyday, I have to admit I would lose a lot of weight that way because I couldn’t stomach eating the same thing everyday like they do. I’m sure pet lovers find it sickening how the commercial pet foods industry rakes in billions of dollars annually. Georgia, thank you for taking a moment to see things from your dogs perspective, you made my day with your comment : ). And to think vets recommend a well known brand of dry food they say has the science behind it and it’s complete & balanced?!

Fiona I would love to thank the owners of Totally Raw Natural Dog food for the quality of their dog food. Roxie We are almost one month into our new lives as owners of a rat terrier puppy, and so it is time for us to thank you (again!) for all the advice and guidance you so patiently provided during our weeks of preparation.
Scout Reemah was adopted from the Colchester SPCA at 4 months of age, she will be 4 in October. NOTE: In an effort to simplify the raw dog food recipe I have incorporated the use of supplements. 18 hardboiled eggs including the shells-cooled (the egg shells supply digestible calcium to your dog. 1 tube of LickOchops omega fatty acid supplement (This supplies important omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in a 1 to 4 ratio, this is good!
Dinovite daily dog supplement (This supplies a host of vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, zinc and live direct fed microbials. This raw dog food recipe can be halved or doubled to accommodate the size of your dog or for multi-dog households.
Mix well and completely with your hands or with a large, strong spoon until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. I personally prefer the freezer containers because they are easy to fill, thaw and serve the raw dog food.
I have several questions and don’t see where I can post so I just hit reply to a post.
We are just starting the Zero Carb -Dinovite with Supromega, beginning with the 24 hour fast this evening. I think me and the commenter was confused cuz you did not list the Dinovite in any part of mixing instructions… I am considering adopting an Australian Cattle dog and I hope to be using this recipe for him! Hi Ed, I have been reading your correspondence for some time now and have taken the plunge and changed our dog to a homemade diet based on your recipe. In fact we are going to use human multivites and minerals as the pet ones are so very expensive here in Malaysia in comparison. Hi Ed, I have just discovered your website while looking up info for our new chihuahua puppy.
I read one of your responses where you mentioned adding chicken bones; I was always told not to give dogs chicken bones. The sheer number of options in the pet stores was overwhelming!  Should I choose kibble, canned food, freeze-dried or frozen raw?  I had no idea, so I threw myself into the world of dog food nutrition. Low-quality kibble uses cheaper ingredients, dangerous preservatives, and includes more grains and fillers. Some raw foods tend to be bloodier than others when thawed which I just couldn’t handle.
I get a bit of kibble, canned, and raw food, plus some extra stuff like yogurt and salmon oil. At this point, I can find no objective evidence that supports the health benefits of feeding a raw diet, although I have heard anecdotes ranging from a shiny hair coat to no more allergies. So perhaps the dogs that we have today evolved from the wolves that scavenged on our garbage (waste or bi-products of agriculture) and not from wolves that became domesticated hunting partners. I think one of the hardest things about stances and discussions is to base our points on scientific evidence versus what we “believe” or want to be true. They have over 500 outlets in the Netherlands where you can get it, so availability is not a problem.
And you want your pal to have the opportunity to live a long healthy life and that’s a worthy goal, one I share. Palatability enhancers are another ingredient used simply to make the food industry waste used as pet food more palatable to your dog. Dog saliva doesn’t break down food stuck in the teeth, only once in the stomach does the digestion process begin.
He needs raw dog food but gets dry dog food which is a little like comparing a Cesar salad to a serving of fries. The point being that your dog really needs fresh whole food like we need to get the healthy results.
They give your dog the proper nourishment your dog needs without having to resort to palatability enhancers, E-numbers, sugar and all the other exotic ingredients made from parts of animals I’d rather not think about. So cutting out the grain that bulks out dry dog food is a good thing for your dog’s long term health. But pet foods that are sold dry in bags rely on chemical preservatives to prevent spoilage.
The air in the part filled bag makes the oils in the dry food rancid and one of the causes of cancers in dogs and cats. In exchange for our dollars, we trust the companies to provide our pets with quality nutrition. Your right, our trust has been misplaced and the best option is for dog owners to take back control of their dogs diet in line with how we control our kids diet and let common sense prevail. At first it would be great, but boy would you soon get sick of them, let alone eating them every day for a lifetime!!! Products available include pork heart, backstrap, beef lung, chicken feet, duck feet, beef trachea, beef liver and beef tripe. I love the fact they work with the breed and age of your dog, as well as any health issues you are facing with your Canine family member. Without the supplements the raw dog food recipe would need an additional 10 to 20 ingredients.

Feeding this  raw dog food recipe without the supplements will result in multiple nutritional deficiency diseases. If your dog is losing a little weight eating the raw dog food and this is not desired, increase the amount you are feeding.
I recently read an article which based alot of the raw homemade dog food on lentils or beans, while including veggies cooked and also meats and bones.
In the recipie it says to add a full tube of lick o chops, and does not mention the powder.
I’ve been looking for a good raw dog food recipe and this looks really easy and economical.
Make sure to read the ingredient list on the bag.  Meat should be among the first 3 ingredients, not corn or other fillers. I heard that this can be cleared up by raw food, so I’m gonna ask my vettie if this is an option.
On the other hand, there is evidence to support concerns about raw diets with respect to nutritional adequacy, pathogen contamination, fecal shedding and environmental contamination. In the final analysis the best raw dog food is always going to be streets ahead of dry dog food and not just because of the drugs used to fortify and preserve that sack of fast food.
Unfortunately, our current agricultural practices yield foods with a fraction of the nutrient content of wild counterparts. However, all these recipes require the addition of the nutritional supplements or they will be deficient. We live in Malaysia and a problem we have is not being able to obtain Dinovite and Lickochops locally.
Thanks for taking the time to share your recipes, I’m looking forward to you posting the intermediate and advanced recipes.
If the dog is very old, no teeth or some other severe health problem then I would cook the bones until they dissolve in a soup stock then serve. This diet lacks many vitamins (Vitamin E, B’s, A and K to name a few) and minerals (calcium). For your convenience click here if you would like to view information on Dinovite liquid dog supplement. Plus, I have seen intestinal illness and chipped tooth enamel from eating bone (although I can not say what kind of bones these were).
It even lines up with Kannon’s view towards sustainability in that less energy is used in processing the food and as long as the animal is wild game (vs.
In short, adjust the serving size of raw dog food depending on your dogs age, weight and activity level. The supplements add digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals, beta carotene directed microbials and omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Dinovite Liquid dog supplement contains a highly absorbable form of zinc called zinc methionine that has a very high absorption rate. Some people decide which foods to feed to their pets based on previous experience with pets, some base their decision on what friends feed to their pets, some stick to what the breeder has recommended, and some go by what their veterinarian advises.
Average size is 8” WilliesTotally Raw’s Willies are from free-range grass-fed cattle. This is an important step, ignoring this step greatly increases your dog’s chance of having digestive upset. The direct fed microbials in Dinovite can help support proper digestion and this can help with bad breath. How do you keep it fresh outside of getting a motel with a kitchen and mixing some midweek? When we reach our destination, usually family, we just put the tupperware in the refrigerator.
The finished food looks like uncooked meat loaf so most people aren’t grossed out by it. Before we switched her to home cooked food she was on a fish based kibble diet and developed skin problems.
