When I look back at when I was first learning about raw cat food, my biggest concern was a meat grinder. There is one camp that believes grinders should not be used (such as the folks at Raw Fed Cats). I’ve shared in previous posts that Cornelius would refuse to eat any chunks of muscle meat. At the end of week 2 of the new kitten introduction,  I was a bit concerned about Cornelius’s rough play with our small kitten. The idea of preparing specialized food for cats came later than for dogs (see dog biscuits and dog food).
Normally in the country no care is taken of a cat's food, and he is left to live, it is said, from his hunting, but when he is hungry, he hunts the pantry's provisions far more than the mouse; because he does not pursue them and never watches them by need, but by instinct and attraction.
He goes on to say that it is all the more unreasonable to expect a cat to live from hunting in that cats take mice more for amusement than to eat: "A good cat takes many and eats few".
If then, only for the sake of making (a cat) more valuable as a vermin-killer, she ought to have regular and sufficient food. Attend to the feeding, and, at a more than one-day show, cats ought to have water as well as milk.
Spratt, which began by making dog biscuits, appears to also have been the first commercial producer of cat food. Most store-bought cat food comes in either dry form, also known in the US as kibble, or wet canned form. Dry food (8-10% moisture) is generally made by extrusion cooking under high heat and pressure. Canned or wet food (75-78% moisture) generally comes in common can sizes of 3 oz (85 g), 5.5 oz (156 g), and 13 oz (369 g). In the United States, cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" must meet standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. Vitamin deficiencies can lead to wide ranging clinical abnormalities that reflect the diversity of their metabolic roles.
The table below lists the AAFCO nutritional profiles for cat foods along with the roles of vitamins and minerals in cat nutrition according to the National Research Council. The feeding of vegan or vegetarian diets to cats remains controversial, even among vegan, vegetarian, animal, and scientific advocacy groups.
The broad pet food recalls starting in March 2007 came in response to reports of renal failure in pets consuming mostly wet pet foods made with wheat gluten from a single Chinese company beginning in February 2007. Although a true requirement for fat per se has not been established, the minimum level was based on recognition of fat as a source of essential fatty acids, as a carrier of fat-soluble vitamins, to enhance palatability, and to supply an adequate caloric density. If the mean urine pH of cats fed ad libitum is not below 6.4, the risk of struvite urolithiasis increases as the magnesium content of the diet increases. Because of very poor bioavailability, iron from carbonate or oxide sources that are added to the diet should not be considered as components in meeting the minimum nutrient level.
Because of very poor bioavailability, copper from oxide sources that are added to the diet should not be considered as components in meeting the minimum nutrient level. Vitamin K does not need to be added unless diet contains greater than 25 percent fish on a dry matter basis. Because processing may destroy up to 90 percent of the thiamine in the diet, allowance in formulation should be made to ensure the minimum nutrient level is met after processing. Biotin does not need to be added unless diet contains antimicrobial or antivitamin compounds. A trip down the supermarket cat food isle can read like an international culinary festival. While these offerings may evoke the idea of tasty meals for humans, are they representative of what a cat is designed to eat?
Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their digestive systems are designed to eat one thing: meat from whole, small prey. While store bought cat food may have supplements to add these nutrients, there is truly no substitute for a balanced raw food diet which mimics as closely as possible what a cat would naturally eat in the wild. In a 10 year study involving over 900 cats, it was found that cats fed only cooked meat exhibited alarming increases in degenerative disease, parasites, skeletal deformities, and behavioral changes.
Cats seek out grass for a variety of reasons, mostly to do with digestion and assistance with hairball removal. Aside from the simple observation that nothing that comes out of a can or pouch can approximate a cat’s natural diet of raw whole prey—not to mention dry kibble, which hardly qualifies as a food product at all—the ingredients used in commercial cat food are typically very low quality animal byproducts that are processed to oblivion. The animal byproducts are rendered, texturized and extruded, using high heat and chemicals such as Birkolene B, carbolic acid, creosote, fuel oil, kerosene and citronella. In 2007, a massive recall was initiated in North America, South America and Europe on hundreds of pet food products found to be tainted with melamine—an industrial chemical used to make fertilizer and plastic. This incident, and the many pet deaths from renal failure that ensued, helped focus minds on the importance of knowing what was in pet food. There is a debate among veterinarians regarding the safety of a raw diet for cats, however with the right knowledge and precautions, a raw diet can be very healthy and successful.
Your cat will reap the benefits of quality ingredients and avoid exposure to pesticides, hormones, antibiotic residue and other contaminants found in factory farmed meat.
Avoid giving your cat anything in the allium family, such as garlic, onions, shallots, etc. You don’t have to use premixes in order to create a successful raw diet for your cat, however using premixes like the ones listed below can help save you time and money, while ensuring that all the needed nutrients are available for your cat in the correct proportions.
Feline Instincts is a brand of raw diet premixes which you add to the raw muscle and organ meat of your choice. If you want to make raw cat food entirely from scratch, do some careful research into exactly what cats require and in what ratios. This raw cat food recipe is adapted from Natascha Willie of TC Feline.  Always use human grade ingredients.
Puree the liver in a food processor or chop into small pieces with a knife or kitchen shears.
For storage, divide into daily portions or individual meals and freeze in small freezer containers or ice cube trays. My original reason for trying raw food was my adopted foster cat, Christy Paws, who had recurring bouts of severe diarrhea. After the weeks of required treatment, the condition improved but came back again after a short time. I was a relatively new foster when Christy Paws came to me in September of 2009 recuperating from a broken leg and a partially amputated tail. This diet is different from the Paleo Diet in that it does not add any fiber (fruits or vegetables).
Christy was having an episode when I started feeding her raw food and within two or three days, the diarrhea was gone and she hasn’t had it since — that was two years ago! The first thing you need to do if you are making a commitment to making raw cat food on a regular basis is to purchase a food grinder. If you don’t want to invest in a grinder to grind bones and all, you can still make raw food. 2000 – 5000 mg fish oil (a good source of essential fatty acids)  Do NOT use cod liver oil!

I put about two cups of hot water in a measuring cup and add all the supplements (8 times the amount in the recipe as this is 25 lbs of meat) to give everything time to dissolve while I am preparing the meat. And, voila, less than two hours later I have 25 pounds of fresh, raw food that my cats love. The supplements are just a guestimate and probably quite a bit higher than the actual amount. If you feed raw food or decide to give it a try, leave us a comment and let us know how it works for you.
Last September, when the Butte fire broke out, I was just getting ready to make a batch of raw when the power went out.
My friend Kelly’s relatives were kind enough to offer us a place to stay while we were evacuated but they had dogs and there was not a good place for the cats. As much as I am against feeding dry food to cats, I decided she would be less likely to get diarrhea from it and I hoped it would only be for a short time. If you want to try this, check out my instructions for canning raw pet food coming next week. This website doesn’t talk about rotating proteins so my cats ate chicken for probably three years or more. As I did more research on raw feeding, I learned that feeding the same protein over and over can cause allergies or at least an intolerance to that protein. Shortly before I started rotating proteins, Christy started throwing up several times a week but I didn’t think that much of it. As part of my healing, I retired early and moved to a beautiful place with few pressures left in my life.
So I started thinking about what cats like: eating, sleeping, hunting, climbing, and hiding. The things that are left, hunting, climbing and hiding, all fall in the category of environmental enrichment and where I feel I fall a little short. They have boxes and cubes that they can hide in and there’s always the furniture to hide under in a pinch or for an ambush. I had one cat that had taken to living in a bedroom upstairs, except at meal time, because she would get chased as soon as meal time was over. I am actually feeding them less raw food than they were getting of commercially canned food. The buying, storing, cleaning, maintaining and using a meat grinder seemed like such a hassle.
I was feeding Cornelius the same raw chicken recipe everyday with the occasional canned food.  After about 7 months he struggled with Cat Food Boredom.
Long-term taurine deficiency resulting, for example, from feeding taurine-deficient dog food, may result in retinal degeneration, loss of vision, and cardiac damage. Some manufacturers sell frozen raw diets and premix products to cater to owners who feed raw. Fat may then be sprayed on the food to increase palatability, and other minor ingredients, such as heat-sensitive vitamins, which would be destroyed in the extrusion process, may be added.
A good quality either wet or dry can be more than satisfactory for a cat's nutritional requirements.
Cat Food Nutrient Profiles were established in 1992 and updated in 1995 by the AAFCO's Feline Nutrition Expert Subcommittee. The main complaint is excessive scratching (Pruritus) which is usually resistant to treatment by steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Overall, several major companies recalled more than 100 brands of pet foods with most of the recalled product coming from Menu Foods.
Brightly colored packaging offers up such gourmet items as Salmon Florentine with Garden Greens, Yellowfin Tuna in Sauce, Beef Feast in Roasted Beef Flavor Gravy, Pate, Salmon with Chunky Tomato Bisque . In nature, a cat’s diet consists of small prey—birds, small rodents, lizards, snakes and insects—which they eat whole and fresh, including feathers, fur, skin, blood and bone. Not only is this completely unnecessary, it is also difficult for cats to digest, as they are not omnivores and do not have digestive systems fit to process large amounts of vegetables or carbohydrates. Add to this a strange mix of ingredients your cat was never meant to eat, such as grain, vegetables and extracted grain proteins—to boost the protein content on the label, even though vegetable protein is not appropriate for cats—and you end up with your typical can of cat food.
All their products are USDA approved and have the support of a wide group of holistic veterinarians. TC Feline is another brand of raw cat food premixes that offers a balanced, nutrient rich powder that you add to raw meat and liver or organs.
Egg white cannot be fed raw, because it contains the enzyme Avidin which binds to the vitamin Biotin—making it unavailable to your cat.
Some cats dislike eating little chunks of liver, while others love it.  You can experiment to see which your cat prefers. While you can use chunks of meat, ground meats create a nicely textured cat food which is easily digested and prevents your cat from possibly picking out what she likes and leaving the rest.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or float frozen food in its container in a sink of very warm water for a quick thaw.
I've made the transition from baking and cooking gluten-free to creating raw vegan recipes that are naturally gluten free. I had her tested for parasites and she had low levels of giardia and coccidia as well as tritrichromonas, an often overlooked parasite in cats. So I had to ask myself, was it really the parasites causing the diarrhea or was the improvement just a part of the cycle of her chronic condition? That’s fine for dogs who have evolved into omnivores, but cats are still strict carnivores and are not equipped to efficiently digest fiber. You can grind just the meat in a food processor, or even hand chop it, and add bone meal to the recipe. As healthy as raw food is for your cat, they are not eating the whole animal and we can rarely find the organ meats they would eat in the wild which contain some essential elements. Then I replace the large grinder plate with the small one and grind the bones a second time.
Some people use baggies, and I tried them for a while, but I find the rigid container easier to fill and store.
When I’m ready to feed it, I take about two ounces per cat and add enough water to make it the consistency of a thick chili. So for less than $35, I have 25 pounds of high-quality, raw cat food with chicken as the main ingredient. We got our generators set up and I was going to make it the next day but, before I could, we were evacuated.
I couldn’t even buy more at our local store because their power was out too and they were closed.
So, I settled on what seemed to be a high-quality dry food and that is what they ate for the next few days. I knew taking frozen raw food on the trip would be very impractical so I decided to try canning some of her food to take along.
She’s the reason I started feeding raw since she has always had a sensitive digestive system. Feeding the same protein over and over in any form; canned, dry or raw, can cause allergies or an intolerance.
The author mentioned the stories you may have seen recently about people who took their dogs on great adventures after learning their dogs were terminally ill. I am constantly researching to make sure I’m feeding a nutritionally balanced diet that is the best it can be.
One thing I did decide at the beginning of the year, though, was that I would play with my cats more. All kitties in the household acted like they were starving to death at meal times, no matter how much I fed them.
Everyone but Echo was quite excited by the idea. I had a very difficult time transitioning Echo to raw food in the beginning and it looks like Mr. They get about two ounces twice a day of raw versus the three ounces twice a day of commercial.

The study found that over 50 percent of cats were either obese or overweight. As with humans, obesity in cats can be detrimental to their health. Wet food has more moisture than dry food, making water intake especially important for cats who eat primarily dry food. The updated profiles replaced the previous recommendations set by the National Research Council(NRC).
Nevertheless, it remains likely that formulation errors will result in nutritional deficiencies in a wide range of commercially available diets from time to time, whether meat-based, vegetarian or vegan. The most likely cause according to the FDA is the presence of melamine in the wheat gluten of the affected foods. By eating whole prey, cats get a balanced ratio of calcium from the bones, fiber from the feathers or fur, and iron and protein from the meat and organs. Moreover, the essential amino acids that are crucial to the optimal health of cats—which exist i  n abundance in raw meat—are completely destroyed by heat.
This will give your cat an alternative to the grass found in landscaping, which may have been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals. Vegetables and grain do not represent food that a cat would seek out in the wild, and vegetable protein found in grains or soy are not an appropriate substitute for that found in raw meat.
This was traced back to at least two Chinese companies who knowingly supplied melamine tainted wheat gluten and rice protein—two forms of cheap protein used in commercial pet food—to hundreds of pet food manufacturers around the world. Mixing meat from different animals in a single meal can cause problems for cats, who have evolved to digest one kind of animal at a time. Feline Instincts brings to light a good point that cats being carnivores do not eat a diet high in wheat, soy, or corn in the wild, so why should they eat that diet, designed for an herbivore, as our pets?
You can mix a day’s worth of food, or you can mix a larger batch and freeze individual servings in reusable containers or ice cube trays. You give me too much credit, yours and Dallas’s raw food entrees are always awesome!!! My gluten intolerance opened up my diet to a whole new world of nutritious plant-based foods. I treated the giardia and coccidia with the normally accepted drugs and, after much research and consultation with my veterinarian, we decided to treat the tritrichromonas with tinidazole. More research led me to think it might be inflammatory bowel syndrome or, hopefully, just a dietary sensitivity. You will need fish oil capsules (a source of essential fatty acids), vitamin E, vitamin B-complex, and taurine (found in the heart and essential for cats).
I add the rest of the water when I actually feed so I am not freezing all that extra water and taking up precious space in my freezer. I’m bad about waiting until the last minute to make the next batch and I had NONE in the freezer. I really didn’t want Christy to have an issue with diarrhea in my car so it was especially difficult to decide what to feed them. If I had a supply of canned raw food on hand, it would have been easy to grab and put in their go boxes and I would have been much less stressed. I didn’t give it anymore thought since she stopped when I changed her food and all seemed well. I started assessing how I am doing in each area and how I could improve it — what I could add to their bucket list. In spite of all the beds, they prefer to cuddle with me, at least when it is cold, so there will continue to be lots of that. I have two more shelves that have been sitting around since last summer and a remodel I want to do on a large cat tree. When the birds are scarce, I could try one of the cat entertainment DVDs that showcase prey. I’ll usually find them in one of the boxes when it is chilly and they are trying to keep warm while they are sleeping. In the meantime, I bring the outdoors in by growing grass (not often enough) and occasionally giving them leaves to play with.
They would mill around while I was getting their food ready, meowing and fussing with one another. Experience is the best teacher as regards the quantity of a cat's food, and in quality let it be varied. Certain manufacturers label their products with terms such as premium, ultra premium, natural and holistic.
Cats need other minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium, for nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and cell signaling. Also, exclusively meat-based diets may contain excessive protein and phosphorus whilst being deficient in calcium, vitamin E, and microminerals such as copper, zinc, and potassium. Melamine is known to falsely inflate the protein content rating of substances in laboratory tests.
Other critical nutrients, such as taurine, are obtained from eating the eyes of their prey. You can easily purchase grass for cats in many supermarkets, or grow your own cheaply from seed. I’m always amazed at the beauty, the intense colors, the textures, and the rich flavors of raw food dishes. Would LOVE the recipe for the beet carrot wraps as well if you can get her to recreate it and write it down!!! While I'm not 100% vegan, it's my favorite way to eat, and making and sharing raw foods makes me giddy. There are less expensive models that will do the job but I knew I would be making a LOT of food and wanted a grinder that would last — and this unit cuts through the bones like butter.
The bones are very finely ground and their are no sharp pieces, so don’t worry about your cat choking on bones. I’m not suggesting you can all the raw food you make, but to have some canned on hand for emergencies is actually a good idea. I started feeding raw because Christy has chronic diarrhea on canned commercial cat food and I hadn’t really looked at labels in years. They rarely play on their own but come to life when the wand or laser toys are brought out. Oatmeal porridge and milk, or white bread steeped in warm milk, to which a little sugar has been added, are both excellent breakfasts for puss; and for dinner she must have an allowance of flesh. The economic impact on the pet food market has been extensive, with Menu Foods losing roughly $30 Million alone from the recall. Living in the City has its joys and challenges, and I enjoy sharing my experiences with you.
Let’s compare that to, say Friskies which, by the way, is a very decent canned cat food.
I am still looking for a commercial food she can eat for times like this but it hasn’t happened yet. I’m already falling down on that since the first of the year so I need to work harder at it. Check your labels and make sure real meat is the first ingredient, not a grain or grain by-product. Teach your cat to wait patiently till she is served—a spoiled cat is nearly as disagreeable as a spoiled child. After only two days back on raw food, they patiently wait while I get their food ready then they race to their designated area to eat.
If you want to have your cat nice and clean, treat her now and then to a square inch of fresh butter. It not only acts as a gentle laxative, but, the grease, combining in her mouth, with the alkalinity of her saliva, forms a kind of natural cat-soap, and you will see she will immediately commence washing herself, and become beautifully clean.
