It is no surprise that Raw Foodism has taken the health field by storm over the past few years. Raw Foodism is defined as “a lifestyle promoting the consumption of un-cooked, un-processed, and often organic foods as a large percentage of the diet. It may seem like Raw Foodism is a new thing, and yes while it does seem trendy, it has actually been around for a long time. In recent years, celebrities like Uma Thurman, Mel Gibson, and Demi Moore have promoted raw foodism and helped to make it a common household name.
Leslie Beck, a Toronto-based dietitian at the Medcan Clinic and regular feature on Canada AM, recently outlined the latest research on nutrients found in cooked and uncooked food. Microwave cooking without water and only until tender maintained the highest antioxidant levels (Journal of Food Science, March 2009). 1 cup of uncooked spinach has 90 mg of calcium, whereas 1 cup of cooked spinach has about 260 mg! Use gentle cooking methods such as grilling or steaming until vegetables are just crisp or tender! Buy frozen veggies and fruits– they lock in more nutrients as compared to ‘out of season’ produce that has been transported across the country, losing many nutrients along the way. On the other hand, I think it is important to realize that we are never going to be able to eat the perfect diet!
Yes, many meals that I cook probably have vitamins and minerals leached out, but you know what? I will continue to enjoy researching about these topics because I love them, but I am not going to drive myself crazy trying to concoct the PERFECT diet. I respect raw foodists very much, and I admire their passion, but for me personally, a raw food lifestyle would be too restrictive. I think a lot of people may have grown up with veggies that were boiled beyond recognition, and there is definitely a happy medium between that and a short steam or sautee! Thanks for this, Angela – this post is timely because I think the whole raw foodism debate is almost all I think about right now! That said, I make clear time and time again that the emphasis should be 100% healthy, plant based, and digestible, NOT 100% raw. I never knew much about raw eating before (other than the positive effects), so it’s good to know all sides. I have just given up artifical sweeteners..(I am a true gum addict) and was wondering the effect that had on your weight? You may be shocked to hear this but my weight (and hunger) actually decreased when I gave up artificial sweeteners! I agree with some of the above about the raw food thing being a trend and that it will soon fade away as trends do. Now, if you’re anything like me, you might well be thinking that raw food isn’t particularly suitable for winter and cold weather.
So, how to make raw meals that are just as warming and comforting as our cooked favourites? Tanya Alekseeva is one of the UK’s leading raw food chefs and educators and blogs over at better raw. Tanya’s e-book “Nourished – Comforting Raw Food Recipes for Winter” addresses the issue of eating raw in winter, with lots of useful info and recipes. I really wanted to try one of the main-dishes from the book but struggled to make a decision with so many options. The cabbage gets jazzed up with a yummy raspberry vinaigrette (Tanya suggests using frozen berries if they’re not in season where you live). The next recipes I want to try are the Pecan Pie Shake, “Never Miss Meat” Stroganov, Root Veggie Satay Noodles…and the Traditional Apple Crumble with Vanilla Sauce! Although my body loves worm breakfasts, especially in the winter, it also craves raw lunches. I was totally going to keep eating salads all winter long, and then I moved to Scotland and, well, let’s just say that I never once switched on the heating when I lived in London, but I do now in Stirling. But I have also had some really nasty colds already, so I definitely want to eat more raw foods! I definitely love both raw and cooked food though I usually lean more towards raw for the desserts! Thank you for sharing this delicious hot cocoa at Smoothie OTW as a good hot chocolate is one of my little evening pleasures ?? I love that you make it completely from scratch, including the almond milk! It’s a learning opportunity complete with a guide, a day by day menu plan, recipes and even a grocery list to help you to experience the vibrant feeling of eating raw foods. If you want to maintain or even gain weight make sure to increase your portions so that you are always feeling full.
If you are aiming to lose weight and are still hungry it is advised to increase your portions and have the additional snacks listed after the weekly plan. These foods will leave you satiated and feeling full but if you are overweight, you will still lose weight quickly even if you add more of these.
This will be made in advance and kept in your fridge to have as a bonus go-to snack, a safeguard to have for when and when hunger hits unexpectedly.
As well, it is full of nutrients, including lots of protein and healthy fat, with a nutritional profile similar to flax, and gives you stamina and endurance. With an increased focus on society’s over-processed, animal fat, and chemical laden diet, the Raw Food Movement seems like a suitable alternative for many. Back in the 1900’s, Ann Wigmore and Herbert Shelton claimed that a raw diet composed of fruits and vegetables was the best diet that humans could eat (Source). For example, lycopene found in tomatoes has been shown to increase by 171% when heated at 190F for 15 minutes (source), blowing its’ raw counterpart out of the water.
However, I know there are tons of people out there who swear by eating raw and that their energy and overall health has increased ten-fold. I feel like there is so much to explore with this topic and so much that we still don’t know. I think it is very easy to get caught up in this obsession with health, but sometimes it is important to step back and look at the big picture. I was waiting for someone to comment on the oxalic acid content in our green monsters that have been flooding blogs lately!!!
This morning’s spinach-frozen banana-almond milk-whey protein-PB smoothie was INCREDIBLE! I have pondered trying a raw week, but my work right now doesn’t allow me to have the concentration on planning that I would need to have a balanced diet. Sometimes I think we put wayyyy too much of our thought activity into different food trends, diets, etc. I think the best diet is something you can stick to permanently and a 100% raw diet just isn’t feasible for most. The food blog world has been exploding with this topic lately and I have been quite aghast at some of the misconceptions and pseudo-science that many raw food bloggers have posted.
We’re naturally drawn to warming, comforting foods at this time of year, and my associations of crisp, fresh, raw salads just didn’t fit into this picture. There are some real show-stoppers in here which I think would be especially fantastic to serve to guests, along with dishes ideal for everyday eating.
About a quarter do call for a dehydrator though, something I don’t own (yet…), so I couldn’t make these, slightly torturous as they all looked really good. Lots of the recipes might sound like conventional dishes: “burgers”, “ noodles” “mash”” “pie” and “curry”, but they’re probably not what you’re expecting! This was creamy and indulgent-tasting, and it would have been hard to believe it was healthy if I hadn’t made it myself.

I really enjoy raw foods, but at this time of year I am craving more warm foods, I like a balance of both. I often forget about raw main-dishes though and head straight for the desserts (!), so this book’s been great inspiration on that front.
However, I will definitely look at this book because these recipes look so gorgeous and nutritious and on the warmer Winter days, I can see myself really enjoying her creations! I’ve been amazed at how warming and filling these foods have been- seems like a nice blend of spices and some richness can really be satisfying, even in winter.
I was just thinking how i wanted to incorporate more raw foods (following my recent IIN module) but the chilly autumn weather had put me off somewhat. There are some really innovative ideas in the book-dishes I’d have never thought possible to make raw! I still have smoothies for breakfast during the week, then baked porridge with fruit at the weekend. Well, you know I’ve been incorporating more cooked foods lately, and I love making up big batches of soup again.

Gain energy, clarity and flexibility and feel the vibrancy that comes with eating raw foods. Most people when they start eating raw foods need to increase their calorie intake to maintain the same weight.
Generally, raw foodists do not heat their food above 118F (although this temperature is widely debated). In 1984, Leslie Kenton’s book called Raw Energy-Eat Your Way to Radiant Health advocated a diet based on 75% raw foods, like sprouts, seeds, and fresh vegetable juice. In their raw state, these green contain calcium binding oxalic acid which binds to calcium, preventing absorption.
I thought it would be benificial for my body if I did, now I see that might not actually be the best way to eat. Right now I basically do a combo of raw and cooked and it works for me now, so I should just stick to it! I have known a handful of people who have done variations of this diet (some very extreme). I am dedicated to eating healthy because it’s a source of interest and enjoyment for me, plus we all want to be well, of course, but without a real verdict on whether or not eating a high-raw diet is more beneficial than a mainstream diet, my head is swimming with what it all means for me and my own lifestyle. Nevertheless, at this time of year we’re all extra susceptible to getting ill and it’s now when we need to be taking extra good care of ourselves and eating the most nutritious foods possible. Tanya’s given these traditional dishes a  raw make-over, but their healthiness definitely doesn’t compromise their flavour. You can still have warm food eating raw, just as long as you don’t heat foods above a certain temperature which is thought to damage their nutrients. I have managed to resist turning on the heating here but tbh it hasn’t actually got very cold yet. Great as an intro for getting into the raw food lifestyle, or just as a tune up to boost your health and help your body to function more optimally. The motivation for eating a raw food diet often comes from the belief that cooking food destroys beneficial vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.
Our bodies have adapted over thousands of years to function in a variety of circumstances and getting a little less than 100% of the vitamin C that is in our broccoli isn’t going to harm us!
I feel like that might save me some of the hassle of buying a huge tub of organic greens every few days! My problem is that these people seemed to be following these diets as a way to obsessively control their food consumption, and not for the supposed health benefits. I would be interested in trying the high-raw thing for like a week perhaps, just because I’m interested and open to other lifestyles, but I have a feeling that the crux of it is to eat clean above all else and to make good choices. I would probably add less almond milk next time though as I like my chia pudding a little thicker.
They’re very easy to make too, just a few ingredients and a food processor is all you need.
Note: there wasn’t any water listed in the ingredients and I found I needed to add some to get a smooth, pourable consistency. Blending all the ingredients on high with some hot water made this plenty warm enough, and the kick of cayenne added extra heat.
I’ve heard of Tanya before, and wow the sun burgers look pretty good with the ranch dressing. We can only strive to do what’s best and constantly look to evolve based on our currents needs. I know not everyone is like this, but I think this is getting lost in all the hype over the raw diet. Sometimes, I would eat raw once a month back in Oregon (not during travels), for instance, I would make raw foods and do a juice cleanse every few days.
5 years ago I good eat anything with abandon and now I have to be careful because of my gluten sensitivity.
But I also think it’s kind of scary to watch people I know use these diets as an excuse to hurt their bodies.
