How the US Loses 40% of Our Food: Problems & Solutions7 by Danielle Gould24 Aug 2012How often do you find yourself throwing away wilted greens or leftovers that have sat too long in your refrigerator? The report takes a hard look across the supply chain at the areas generating most waste, using the best available data, and makes a number of recommendations for waste reducing solutions.
One example of a tech-related problem and solution referenced in the report was that of rejected perishables at the distribution stage.
Food deserts are defined  as parts of the country vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas.
This has become a big problem because while food deserts are often short on whole food providers, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, instead, they are heavy on local quickie marts that provide a wealth of processed, sugar, and fat laden foods that are known contributors to our nation’s obesity epidemic.
Mari Gallagher, noted author and expert of Food Deserts will be speaking at an ANA presentation in Spring 2011.

It enables FDA to focus more on preventing food safety problems rather than relying primarily on reacting to problems after they occur.
The law also gives FDA important new tools to hold imported foods to the same standards as domestic foods and directs FDA to build an integrated national food safety system in partnership with state and local authorities. The funding the Agency gets each year, which affects staffing and vital operations, will also affect how quickly FDA can put this legislation into effect. The law requires FDA to write the regulations that were authorized by the Sanitary Transportation Act of 2005 and does not provide FDA with any new authorities beyond what was included in the 2005 law. The food pyramid was designed to offer an easy-to-understand look at healthy eating, but for the average person it’s too simplistic, vague, and sometimes way off. Above is an image of the original USDA food pyramid, familiar to so many from primary school. Breakfast: A bowl of cereal with milk, an apple or banana, and two pieces of toast with butter (1 serving of dairy, 1 serving of fruit, 2 servings of carbs and little fat).
Lunch: A lean turkey sandwich with cheese, some cut carrots and celery, a bag of mixed nuts, and a plum (2 servings of protein, 1 serving of dairy, 1 serving of carbs, 1 serving of vegetables, and 1 serving of fruit). Dinner: Grilled chicken, peas and carrots, salad, and a slice of zucchini bread (1 serving of protein, 2 servings of vegetables, and 1 serving of carbs). The food pyramid has undergone quite a few revisions since it was created, both official and third-party, but we’re going to look at the two most notable.
In April 2005, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) decided to update the food guide pyramid with what you see above. The biggest fault of any food pyramid, like any set of diet and health guidelines, is that everybody is different and encounters different eating experiences throughout their day.
Food pyramids break up macronutrients into more specific categories, which is great except you don’t necessarily eat a whole zucchini as part of your meal. When choosing foods you want to eat, you’re never going to know the full list of nutrients it can be provide. Your daily calorie intake depends on more factors than being human, but that’s basically all the food pyramids assume. Safe diets aren’t always as simple as just reducing calories, and you should consult a doctor before making any extreme decisions about your diet, but there are a lot of ways to find out how to determine your daily calorie intake using those factors. In theory, we digest and process food in the same ways, but a lot of us have allergies and dietary restrictions. Just a small comment on the old school pyramid, carb's were high back in the day when active lifestyles were a norm, with the modern era of the internet and television, eating carbs and not enough exercise will bulk you up, and not in a healthy or sexy way either. Physical actions in the real world and data processing in the digital world are fusing as the Internet of Things takes hold.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released their latest data on food security in the US. In [the]… more severe range of food insecurity, the food intake of some household members was reduced and normal eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year due to limited resources.
What you’ll notice about the USDA’s findings is that people are going hungry not because of a food shortage, as is often portrayed in the media (and certainly used as a buzz word to promote genetically modified crops), but rather because of a lack of resources, or poverty, combined with a number of other factors discussed below.
Genetically modified (GM) crops are often touted as necessary to ensure global food security, even though studies show reduced crop yields with their use. Instead, the scientists suggested that "agro-ecological" methods would provide the most viable means to ensure global food security, including the use of traditional seed varieties and local farming practices already adapted to the local ecology. You see, our current food system is highly concentrated — first, in terms of being a monoculture with very few varieties available, and second, in terms of ownership of these few precious crops. Meanwhile, problems with hunger are typically not related to a shortage in food production, but rather problems with the way that food is used and distributed – and the types of food being grown in the first place.
Instead of becoming more conservative and conscious of the food resources available, many nations have become overly consumerist and wasteful.
In the meantime, while there is a global food surplus taking place there is still starvation in developing countries throughout the world. And it is largely because of inequality that poverty is allowed to sit at the table unwelcome, removing the possibility of providing the food resources needed by everyone, but tolerated by present, past, and likely future generations nevertheless. Today, about 75 percent of US men and 67 percent of US women are either overweight or obese, and the trend is getting worse, not better.
And here again, while it’s claimed GM crops are "necessary" to feed a growing population, their actual results of FATTENING the world are rarely shown. GM crops make no progress with starvation due to distribution issues, and producers instead look for profitable ways to get more people eating the GM diet staples of corn syrup, trans fats from soybean oil, and GM sugar, which together fuel the rising obesity rates around the globe while doing little to solve problems where hunger exists.
Hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans fats) known to cause heart and cardiovascular disease is made from GM soy that is resistant to pesticide. Corn syrup, trans fats, and sugar – along with heavily processed refined grains – these ingredients are now foundational in the US diet, and there is virtually no doubt that they are primary contributors to Americans' failing health and rising rates of obesity.
Ever since 1933, every five to seven years the US Congress passes a set of legislative acts commonly referred to as "the Farm Bill," which includes agricultural subsidies to growers of certain types of food.
This includes corn, soybeans, wheat, and rice, which are the top four most heavily subsidized foods.
The Farm Bill essentially creates a negative feedback loop that perpetuates the highly profitable but health-harming processed food diet that the United States has become infamous for. The US government is actively promoting obesity and chronic disease through these subsidies, while simultaneously creating flawed and ineffective anti-obesity campaigns and programs to combat the very problems rooted in its agricultural policies.
But this “green energy” program is backfiring, because there’s nothing “green” about planting a mega-surplus of corn, especially when natural prairies are now being sacrificed to do it. Another clear indicator that food production shortages are not the root cause of people going hungry is the amount of food wasted in the US. In all, it’s estimated US families throw out about 25 percent of the food and beverages they buy.

Many Americans on the most limited food budgets, such as those who receive food assistance dollars, live in "food deserts" – areas without grocery stores, and perhaps only a convenience store or a fast-food restaurant where they can purchase their food.
The junk foods are made even cheaper through the use of unhealthy filler ingredients and preservatives that prevent spoiling, with the end result being that the very worst foods for your health are often significantly cheaper to buy and may be the only options available for some. If we're going to subsidize farmers, let's subsidize in a way that helps restore the health of American citizens and our land — programs that might just pay for themselves by the reduction in healthcare costs they bring about. Since mid-August 2012, FoodCorps has started 411 garden projects in 10 states with the help of close to 3,300 community volunteers, and have harvested nearly 29,600 pounds of fresh produce for local schools.14 On a national level, intense lobbying by the junk-food industry and corn and soy associations is keeping junk-food and its related subsidies as the status quo. Two well-known chefs prepared quite a meal for dozens of world leaders at an informal working lunch on climate and sustainable development goals at the United Nations Sunday.
The lunch, which was hosted by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for world leaders as part of an ongoing discussion about the Paris climate accord likely to be finalized in December, was designed to make a unique point: food and sustainable agriculture are an important part of the energy transition discussion. The two chefs a€“ former White House chef Sam Kass and Dan Barber, a prominent New York chef who co-owns the Blue Hill restaurant a€“ told Agence France-Presse that they created the lunch for world leaders from food waste to make just such a point. Afterward, Ban told reporters at a press briefing that the world leaders had made progress toward a Paris accord. But while climate and a transition to a renewable energy economy were the main focus of the working lunch, food waste was also on the menu. That sort of response to the menu was precisely what Kass and Barber had hoped for with the concept of a wasted food lunch for world leaders. Reducing cattle production as a food source is actually one of the few silver bullets available to make significant inroads in the climate fight, experts say. Barber crafted the menu with Kass, the former White House chef who drove the anti-obesity "Let's Move" campaign of first lady Michelle Obama.
Kass told AFP he thought of the wasted food lunch concept as he learned about the goals of the Paris climate agreement.
If food waste were a nation, in fact, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. For the lunch, Kass and Barber partnered with farmers, distributors, processors, producers and retailers to transform the "waste" that occurs at every link in the food chain into a world-class meal. Barber said he hopes that more meals like this for world leaders, CEOs and elite thought leaders can have an impact. Since so much food is lost or wasted each year, doing something about it to make the process much more efficient could have a significant, positive effect on the global economy. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, one of the world's poorest and most food-insecure regions, the World Bank estimates that just a 1 percent reduction in post-harvest losses could lead to economic gains of $40 million each year.
Perishable items can be rejected if they do not meet the requirements of a buyer, at which point the distributor must find a new buyer. This is largely due to a lack of grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and healthy food providers. The food desert problem has in fact become such an issue that the USDA has outlined a map of our nation’s food deserts, which I saw on Mother Nature Network. John Ryan, and overview of the FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FMSA) so those who have a supply chain which requires refrigeration or cold storage understand the regulations as part of doing business in the food transportation and good space.
The law also provides FDA with new enforcement authorities designed to achieve higher rates of compliance with prevention- and risk-based food safety standards and to better respond to and contain problems when they do occur. Building a new food safety system based on prevention will take time, and FDA is creating a process forgetting this work done.
Some authorities will go into effect quickly, such as FDA’s new authority to order companies to recall food, and others require FDA to prepare and issue regulations and guidance documents. FDA is committed to implementing the requirements through an open process with opportunity for input from all stakeholders. FDA is required to issue regulations to require that shippers, carriers by motor vehicle or rail vehicle, receivers, and other persons engaged in transportation of food to use sanitary practices within the next year and half.
When we didn’t get paid for the services within 50 days, we called them and found out that we are now required to enter the PRO number which is used to trace and track the originals of the foods. Here’s a quick look at the history of the food pyramid and its goals, followed by some tips for how you can actually use it for better eating.
The bottom of the pyramid is the carbohydrate group, recommending 6-11 servings per day — an aspect heavily attacked by modern nutritionists. If the original food pyramid felt slightly confusing and incomplete, you now have a fully fledged diet puzzle. The figure climbing the steps was designed to represent the physical activity necessary to healthy living. There are enough similarities to make some general recommendations, but acting on any of those recommendations without factoring in your own specific needs is not the best course of action. You start with a tortilla, add beans, and then add rice (amongst other potential ingredients). When you’re figuring out how much you need to eat each day to maintain a balanced diet, you should factor in your age, sex, height, weight, level of exercise, and whether fat loss is a goal. Whether your restrictions are voluntary or not, you probably have to substitute a normal item you find on the food group pyramid for something else. Share your tools, tactics and your own ideas of what the food pyramid looks like for you, in the comments. The Internet of Things – a network of of physical devices that are connected digitally – can translate physical properties into digital data, which can be sent anywhere in the world, and processed at light speed. Being food “secure” means you have access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. Not to mention, GM crops are monocrops, which means they are more vulnerable to disease and require increased usage of pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides.
And far from being the answer to the world's food needs, this concentration actually ensures food insecurity.
1.2 to 2 billion tons of all food produced ends up as waste, which is 30 percent to 50 percent of total food production in the world, and it is not only a waste of food but a waste of energy, water, and other resources that go into producing it.
Many people are not getting enough to eat and the main contributor is a large-scale social problem that no one can seem to tackle fully: poverty. By subsidizing these, particularly corn and soy, the US government is actively supporting a diet that consists of these processed grains, namely high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), soybean oil, and grain-fed cattle – all of which are now well-known contributors to obesity and chronic disease. The US green energy policy requires oil companies to blend corn ethanol into their gasoline, which has driven up corn prices (until this year).
Meanwhile, how can there be talks of a food shortage when the US is using up some of its best soil to grow corn for fuel? More than 800 million people around the world don’t have access to enough to eat, and when corn prices rise, it makes it difficult for even more people to feed their families. A report from the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) revealed that 40 percent of food in the US goes uneaten, which amounts to a waste of more than 20 pounds of food per person, every month.

In the UK, about two-thirds of household food waste is due to food spoiling before it is used.
Meanwhile, instead of ensuring that all Americans have access to healthy foods, the US government is actively supporting a diet that consists of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), soybean oil, corn oil, and grain-fed cattle, a direct result of their flawed farm subsidy system.
The time is ripe for change, and redesigning the system could help move us toward economic and nutritional, recovery – and a food system that provides access to nutritious foods for all.
You can also find an ever increasing number of "eat local," and "buy local" directories, in which local farms will be listed.
On their interactive map, you can find a listing for local farmers, CSAs, and markets near you. An energy transition on the scale envisioned by the Paris accord will require actions at many levels, including sustainable agriculture.
That loss every year is roughly equivalent to more than 3 billion tons of carbon that's responsible for climate change. Reducing food loss and waste could, in fact, reduce financial burdens on the world's most vulnerable people. And out of that $40 million, most of the benefits would go directly to the smallholder farmers growing the food.
Robinson works with the business development department to create messaging that attracts the right decision makers, gaining inbound leads and increasing brand awareness all while shortening sales cycles, the time it takes to gain sales appointments and set proper sales and execution expectations. On the next level up, we have the vegetable group on the left (3-5 servings per day) and the fruit group on the right (2-4 servings per day). This food guide pyramid is actually pretty much the same as the old one, except it’s harder to read. Each category also gets a little more specific, such as the grains category suggesting that at least 50 per cent of all grain intake consist of whole grains. The USDA food pyramid is based on a 2000 calorie (per day) diet and recommends about half of those calories come from carbs.
Here’s how to take the information you find in a food pyramid (preferably the rebuilt pyramid previously mentioned) and actually use it for better eating. Eating one of those could end up giving you a serving of protein (the turkey), a serving of dairy (a piece of cheese), and a serving (or more) of carbohydrates (the bread).
For example, plums are high in fibre and black beans are high in protein and carbohydrates. It’s good to have your particular needs in mind when you figure out how the serving suggestions on the food pyramid apply to you. It’s important to remember that substitutes can have a major difference in nutritional value and to know what those differences are. In the next five years, 20 billion devices are expected to be connected to the Internet of Things, revolutionising business models and marketing strategies and impacting businesses globally. Now, a clunky, Windows-only and Chinese-language-only jailbreak is available for the newest iOS operating system.
Poverty is not merely a social problem it is a major health hazard and humanitarian disaster.
It’s hard to point fingers at a food shortage when we’re dealing with rising rates of obesity-related deaths. Corn crops are already subsidized by the US government, so between subsidies and rising ethanol-driven prices, corn has become quite a cash crop for farmers.
Individual articles are based upon the opinions of the respective author, who retains copyright as marked. For instance, it included a vegetable burger made of pulp left over from juicing (which typically wastes most of the produce). The penultimate level consists of the dairy group on the left (2-3 servings per day) and the protein group on the right (2-3 servings per day).
It was intended to separate the food groups into more accurate categories and make better recommendations for healthier eating based on scientific research. If you’re cooking, try to stay on top of everything that goes into that particular dish.
Using Chipotle as an example, those three items would provide you with 90g of carbohydrates. The information on this website is not intended to replace a one-on-one relationship with a qualified health care professional and is not intended as medical advice. French fries were created from starchy corn that would otherwise go to feed animals, and which is a byproduct of corn grown on about 90 million acres in the United States. More than a third of all food produced worldwide, 1.3 billion tons of edible food each year, goes to waste.
All the way up top is the fat group, which you’re supposed to avoid whenever possible.
It doesn’t account for all sorts of things, like the high carbohydrate content found in beans or all the dairy that sneaks its way into so many foods and sauces, homemade or manufactured.
Diets recommending lower carb intake generally suggest 80g of carbohydrates per day, so some believe that even the lower figure of 130g is a bit high. It is intended as a sharing of knowledge and information from the research and experience of Dr. Processed and prepared foods are loaded with added sugars, many of which they call by different names. The goal of the original food pyramid was to suggest a healthy diet that would be easy for anyone to follow. It also doesn’t account for many important variables, such as your sex, your height and healthy weight, your daily activity, and how different bodies have easier or harder times processing certain foods. While you don’t necessarily want to give up cooking, uncooked and unprocessed whole foods can make a great contribution to a healthier diet. Knowing which foods are good sources of which nutrients can help you make better decisions when choosing your servings. Rice milk has significantly higher levels of carbohydrates than regular milk, and soy milk often has a lot of sugar added (not always the case, but it’s always worth checking first). It’s hard to put stock in something designed to represent everybody in a diverse country. The food pyramid can be a good guide for choosing those servings, but when you start to get specific, you need to know when a food counts as a serving outside of its main category as well. If we want to build an effective, science-backed food movement, additives like these would seem, as Lehrer suggests, to be the best place to start. Mercola encourages you to make your own health care decisions based upon your research and in partnership with a qualified health care professional.
