We are pleased to announce that The village-stores run an open discussion blog for the local community. It can be a confusing question as there is a lot of conflicting opinion in the media as to the nutritional benefits, but regardless of the data on the actual nutrient levels of organic vs.
In a perfect world, we’d all eat nothing but naturally grown produce from our local farmer (or straight from the enormous vegetable patch in our own back yard!) everything freshly picked that day, still covered by mineral rich soil and warm from the sun. So I usually answer by saying that if there was a short list of what you should buy organic, then include the foods that are known to be the most chemically sprayed conventionally and invest on those foods.
Hopefully the more we buy organic, the more we create a demand for it, the more prices will come down.

Interesting story – we often see lists of things that you must buy organic but not the other way around. We grow our own produce and cooperate with local farmers to provide a veg box delivery scheme in and around Caernarfon and Bangor, in North Wales. The van used to make our deliveries runs on bio-fuel, helping to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum.
Please visit our face book group - Village Veg - to find out more about our scheme and see pictures of our farm and produce. I was kindly sent a vegetable box to review from the lovely people at Riverford Organic Vegetables.
All the vegetables arrived in tip top condition and all that was left for me to do was unpack the box then think up what to cook with them! Carrots, Leeks, Potatoes, Broccoli, Greens, Mushrooms, Fennel and Cherry Tomatoes were all faultless. Riverford are a mine of information on everything from chicken farming, ploughing fields, cooking ideas and loads more. When I was in the States last summer, I signed up for a veg box from an organic cooperative and I loved it. All future discussions (Recipes, Organic foods issues, Community issues etc.) will be published in our blog. With organic methods, the nitrogen present in composted soil is released slowly and therefore plants grow at a normal rate, with their nutrients in balance.
When you look at these two lists you can see the foods ok to eat non-organic mostly have a protective skin to shield the goodness inside from harmful chemicals.  So keep all this in mind, but in the end, just make the best choices with what’s available to you and always wash your produce well regardless. I never really considered that there might be more nutritional value in one versus another.
I agree with you that although it would be ideal to have nutritious AND clean food, that we need to be more concerned with eating organic where possible to avoid pesticides.

Ideal for small business to promote healthy eating in the work place, improving physical wellness and productivity. Word spread, and with it came the challenge of how to meet demand without compromising a commitment to local growing and employment, supporting local farmers and keeping a close link between grower and consumer.
Vegetables fertilised with conventional fertilisers grow very rapidly and allocate less energy to develop nutrients. Some of Alison's favorite foods are: avocados, dark chocolate, blueberries, brown rice sushi, fish, sweet potatoes, black bean spaghetti, buffalo mozzarella and quinoa.
This list is very helpful to at least bridge the gap where organic is either out of budget or simply not available. Throughout the year the selection of our boxes alters with the seasons, allowing us to give you the freshest, best quality and best value for money possible. However, buying conventional produce from local farmers also has benefits as nutrient values in produce peak just after harvest. All the produce is either grown on the farm or sourced from as locally as possible to ensure that the food you receive is as fresh as possible. As a general rule, the less produce has to travel, the fresher and more nutrient-rich it remains. If there are items that you do not want then you can simply get in touch and we will be happy to make sure that you are not delivered any. Alternatively you can choose not to have gift wrapping and we will deliver in the regular polystyrene boxes.
