Do you suffer from seasonal allergies, well why not try raw honey as an all-natural treatment! Although there is very little formal research on the topic, many seasonal allergy sufferers swear by it!
Raw honey is very moisturising and is a natural humectant, use it as a nourishing face mask to help your skin retain its moisture. But not all sugar is bad, says Helen Troncoso, a Latino Health & Wellness expert based in New Jersey. Boxed cereals, pancakes, pastries, muffins, toast with jam… we’re bombarded with temptations from the time we wake up until the time we go to bed.
While there are a ton of problems with sugar (I’ll go into that a little later), a big one is the fact that sugar spikes insulin, which causes some serious issues over time. Think of insulin like your mom… she comes into your room and tells you to clean up – store everything away. These sneaky little sugars are everywhere and you’ve been conditioned to CRAVE this nasty substance, wreaking havoc on your body from your mind to your gut to your skin and your overall health! The Standard American Diet has nearly eliminated the bitter taste by packing our foods and products with SUGAR.
Sugar was only available to our ancestors a few months out of the year during harvesting time. In the last 20 years, the amount of sugar each person consumes yearly in the United States has soared from 26 pounds per person to more than 135 pounds per person. Fast Fact: Metabolism slows when your liver is under too much pressure and alcohol certainly gives your hard-working liver a run for it’s money, requiring it to work extra hard to process this detrimental substance! And a note to all the guys out there… consuming more than 2 drinks can stall your testosterone for 16-18 hours! It’s the leading reason that nearly 70 percent of Americans and 40 percent of kids are overweight, which is a shocking percentage. In one study, Harvard scientists found that a high-sugar milkshake (compared to a lower-sugar one) not only spiked blood sugar and insulin and led to sugar cravings, but it caused huge changes in the brain. All forms of sugar can spike blood sugar levels, leading to cravings, hunger and energy crashes.
An excess of glucose (blood sugar) in your body triggers insulin to be released from the pancreas.
Fructose (specifically) is metabolized in the liver and an overconsumption can lead to liver problems. When sugar spikes insulin levels, it creates an immune response in the body, causing inflammation. Raw honey is usually much thicker and cloudier and still contains all the pollen and benefits that honey can offer. Unlike all the other sweeteners on the site, honey has a relatively high glycemic index, so it is not suitable for people who are on low-sugar diets.
We enjoy it in small amounts - a teaspoon spread on a flax cracker, or a couple of tablespoons in a batch of chocolate.
We were roasting in the south west of France and saw on the map a lake 'just over the border' in Spain. However, we spent the next week camping the Pyrenees, in an incredibly wild area where it really did seem like time had stopped. Always we would stop at the shop in Bielsa to buy larger and larger amounts of Ramon's amazing honey.. We couldn't meet the demand from friends and family - this alerted us to the fact that we might be onto something really exceptional.
So one year we decided we would try and go and see Ramon and ask him if he could sell wholesale honey to us. We had bought ferry tickets and were close to our leaving day but still we hadn't been able to get any response from him.
I suppose we were expecting a little old man dressed in a beekeeper's suit, but as we were to find, Ramon looked somewhat different. Quite a hip looking dude, but not in the least bit pretentious and very very earnest about his honey. They really were living the self-sufficient life, although it was a way of life for them, not a fad.
Begona had prepared a feast for us and as it was a cold day we sat in front of a roaring fire whilst Ramon told us about his philosphy of beekeeping and we tried different types of honey on freshly buttered baguettes. We go to see the hives for all the different floral varieties of honey we supply and witness the honey extraction process. While the vast majority of orders placed before midday are dispatched the same day, this is not guaranteed.
