The question of whether or not organic food is really actually better for you than conventional counterparts is for sure in the top 10 questions I’m asked most often. Namely, pesticides, insecticides, added growth hormones and un-needed (and dangerous) antibiotics.

Note: this post is about the health effects of eating organic, like nutritional value and pesticide residues in organic vs. The point is that studies are messy and you should expect to find a lot of conflicting results. With the disclaimer out of the way, let’s look at what the science says about nutritional quality of organic vs.

Nearly every time 'common sense' is invoked, it's a smoke-screen for laziness: "I just know what I know".
That's not how you're using it (you're doing us a service by pointing out something interesting and informative); but it does no work. Which proves the reason many, if not most, people get into organic products in the first place. Reading the abstract or paper (unfortunately behind a paywall) would make more sense than relying on one of Rupert's withered old organs. The abstract suggests some small differences in residue levels, and in the type (but not amount) of bacterial contamination. But, still 'hopefully' no GM (which I actually don't have that much of an issue with) and pesticides.


OK, let's discount the studies where animals fed GM soy led to organ damage, let's discount the studies that found rising sterility, they don't exist, they're all written by crazy people! I'm giving you starting points to go find the evidence for yourself, or do you need a whitepaper to do that as well?
Google and random web videos are indiscriminate starting points, like picking books off a shelf by rolling dice. Go do your research on Monsanto and GMOs, and you can tell me in 3 months time that what I posted today was actually correct. Some people assert that “organic” foods are a marketing ploy–they cost more but there is no other difference between these and conventionally-grown plants. The researchers discovered that the quality of studies has hugely appreciated over the years, resulting in more reliable reports of food safety and nutrition. Now there is concentrated evidence as the result of independent review that the old-fashioned way produces better food. A plant on a conventionally managed field will typically have access to high levels of synthetic nitrogen and will marshal the extra resources into producing sugars and starches. Without relying on pesticides, plants grown organically have to protect themselves naturally and they do so by increasing antioxidant levels that bugs don’t like (but we do). In people, phytochemicals such as phenols and polyphenols can help prevent diseases triggered or promoted by oxidative damage, like coronary heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. The study estimates that organics contain twenty to forty percent more antioxidants than non-organics. There are fewer pesticide residues in organic foods (and remember, any pesticides used must also be organic and not synthetic)–by a factor of one quarter. Much of the biggest crops in North America (soy, corn) is genetically modified, which introduces a whole other level of concern. Genetically modified foods go against the grain, so to speak–why fool with Mother Nature?
These two lists call out the most contaminated and cleanest produce available, even after it’s been washed. Antibiotics that are fed to animals also end up in your body and are a nightmare for your healthy gut bacteria, while growth hormones can make your fat cells grow (they are growth hormones, after all.) Having an organic-only rule then it comes to animal products is a personal choice, but I highly recommend it.
Always remember, the more vibrant, colorful and flavorful produce will have the most amount of nutrients. My wife and patients have told me for 20 years that they feel better on an organic diet, but I have said there is no reason why they should. Organic foods do not contain pesticides and hormones, so healthy gut bacteria are not at risk. Our pursuit will always be to provide pure food that nourishes the gentle tummies of the little ones in our lives.
Organic is portrayed as the right choice for your health and conventionally produced food is scoffed as being ‘pesticide laden’. Because organic is more expensive, and feeling like they have to eat organic those with smaller budgets feel stressed.
That’s why we should look at the evidence as a whole and not rely too much on any one study. I do my best to use credible sources, but medical research is complex and I can't guarantee the information on this site is error-free. As far as one can tell from the abstract, it doesn't suggest any differences are clinically significant.


There will be some organic providers (usually the one you have to get up at the crack of dawn to go to) that can provide more nutritious quality produce. Just because it "feels" better because you have to make a special effort to get organic produce doesn't mean it is more nutritious.
Truly, if you're serious about finding good sources of evidence on anything, you don't start with google and vimeo. Try googling for flat earth and fake moon landing, and see if they prove to be useful starting points on the nature of our solar system.
We can be pretty confident that we are going to face: massive destruction of our ecosystems due to global warming and almost certain nuclear war due to nuclear proliferation amongst unstable states.
As a result, the harvested portion of the plant will often contain lower concentrations of other nutrients, including health-promoting antioxidants. So when you eat a conventional apple, you are also eating four times the chemicals used to kill other living things with it than in an organic apple. Theoretically, consumers have the power to demand what they want and manufacturers will create the products to meet that demand.
Unfortunately, there’s still some debate as to whether or not organic produce has more nutrients that conventional produce.
It also prevents you from over-consuming unhealthy foods that you shouldn’t be having in the first place. Nutritional value changes with seasons, weather, soil quality, crop variety, freshness, storage time, etc. That’s also the reason that both sides of the debate can claim “scientific validity” for their arguments. It equips us for nothing else, certainly not evaluation of the results of different agricultural techniques.
Judgements may differ on that, but it looks like it's what the paper says, in which case Angus's report is accurate. It most likely has to do with the use of synthetic fertilizers and cadmium absorption by plant roots. Peeling helps, but remember that pesticides actually grow into the plant as well through the roots so simply peeling the produce might not remove all of the toxins. Even though most of Europe has banned GMOs, the loop hole is that the animals can be fed grain from GM crops. Studies use various ways to try to control for those variables, such as using adjacent plants and matching cultivars and growing seasons.
In this field (like in most areas of scientific study) it’s easy to find some studies that support your predetermined conclusions. I'm not convinced so far that enough due diligence has been done to use GM on a large scale, but neither do I think GM research should be shut down. Getting knickers in a twist about research that may, or may not, have minor health ramifications is blinkered and neurotic. Again, I still think that organic is better–even the healthiest produce can be ruined with toxic pesticide and insecticide residue.
