April 16, 2010 By: Nicole3 CommentsThere has been much debate and controversy on this topic ranging from animal cruelty and various genetically modified food issues. I feel like we all know quite a bit about this topic, but most people don’t care that much. You can lose 25 lbs in a year by replacing one 20 oz soda a day with a no calorie beverage (preferably water). Children consume almost twice (1.8 times) as many calories when eating food prepared outside the home. Support the passage of laws requiring chain restaurants to post calorie information on menus and menu boards.Half of the leading chain restaurants provide no nutritional information to their customers. Over the last two decades, rates of obesity have tripled in children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years. Farmer’s markets allow farmers to keep 80 to 90 cents of each dollar spent by the consumer. Each year, contaminated food causes millions of illnesses and thousands of deaths in the U.S. Demand job protections for farm workers and food processors, ensuring fair wages and other protections.Poverty among farm workers is more than twice that of all wage and salary employees. When you’re eating clean or paleo or whatever, you should pay attention to not only what you are eating, but where your food comes from. The iconic American meal of a cheeseburger, fries, and shake includes several corn-based ingredients: the patty (corn-fed beef), the cheese (cornstarch), the bun (high-fructose corn syrup), the ketchup (high-fructose corn syrup and corn syrup), the fries (corn oil), and the shake (corn syrup solids and cellulose gum).
A chicken can be born, raised in a pitch black environment, loaded with meds and antibiotics, and butchered and ready to eat in 49 days.
Numerous federal agencies are responsible for food safety and inspection in the United States, including the U.S.
As author Michael Pollan says, “That’s what we’ve been heavily subsidizing, encouraging farmers to grow more of, and that’s what makes fast food so cheap.

COOK WITH KIDS: Get those kiddos into the kitchen using real food ingredients to make some of their favorite meals. PURCHASE FROM LOCAL FARMS: There is no better way to learn where food comes from than visiting a farm. If you've researched organic food to any depth, one thing becomes readily apparent--conventional foods can't compare to organic. The Stanford University review was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and simply regurgitated the results of other studies with inconclusive results.
They looked at 17 studies comparing people who ate organic with those who did not and 223 studies that compared the levels of nutrients, bacteria, fungus or pesticides in various foods - including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and eggs. None of the human studies ran for longer than two years, making conclusions about long-term outcomes impossible. They claimed that fruit and vegetables contained similar amounts of vitamins, and milk the same amount of protein and fat. Tomatoes grown by organic methods contain more phenolic compounds than those grown using commercial standards. Other findings published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that organically produced apples have a 15 percent higher antioxidant capacity than conventionally produced apples. I would emphatically disagree and emphasize that higher antioxidant levels, lower pesticide loads (which the study admits to), lack of genetically modified seeds, and overall better farming practices are indeed a convincing difference between organic and conventional foods in both nutrient content and health benefits.

Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler, the lead author of the latest review, said there were many reasons why people chose to eat organic, including animal welfare or environmental concerns.
One of the possible reasons they didn't find that is that they were exposed to a group of studies that were hand picked to provide erroneous results on which they based their fabricated conclusions. Studies that treat crop trials as if they were clinical trials of medicines, like this one, exaggerate the variation between studies, and drown out the real differences.
There is an abundance of evidence that suggests that the nutritional benefits from eating organically produced foods are quite dramatic when comparing them conventionally produced foods. The only two factual findings coming out of this review were the highlights on pesticide loads and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
A very unfortunate and convenient omission from the review is that organic foods (by definition) do NOT contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) so they are far healthier in this respect alone over conventional produce.
Most nations in the world have no GMO-Free platform to protect their citizens and although this is slowly changing, most nations are far behind places like Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Egypt, Russia and others who have GMO-Free or national bans on GMOs. This study and its promotion by the mainstream media only further reduce the credibility of conventional produce.

Read on to find out about the importance of farms, the food chain and the process of taking produce from the farms to you.
We cannot live without food and because we obtain our food from farms, we depend on farming for our everyday needs. In Australia, around 98 percent of the fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, milk and eggs sold in supermarkets are produced by Australian farmers. The food chain shows us how each living thing is connected in a chain that provides food for our survival. The second part of the chain are the producers, which are organisms that make their own food from the primary energy source (e.g. Secondary consumers are the animals (including humans) that eat the primary producers (meat) or the products that they produce (e.g.
When the producers or consumers die, they are broken down or eaten by the next link in the chain: the decomposers.
A food supply or production chain is the process of how food from a farm ends up on our tables. I just posted on my blog about my daughter wanting to try a vegetarian diet after watching meet your meat videos from youtube.
A lot of supermarket food is not regulated as closely as organic labeled food, not to mention all of the chemicals, antibiotics and other crap that is in non-organic choices. Meanwhile over in the produce section, the head of broccoli costs more than a fast-food hamburger.
Photo junkie, crafty, oudoorsy chick with a flair for graphic design and digital marketing. Both in nutrient content and quality, organic foods exceed conventional sources in almost every area. And all of the available evidence was relatively weak and highly variable - which the authors say is unsurprising because of all the different variables, like weather and soil type, involved. That study -- published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry -- analysed the phenolic profiles of Daniela tomatoes grown either using 'conventional' or organic methods, finding that those grown under organic conditions contained significantly higher levels of phenolic compounds than those grown conventionally. However, you have to look at all the evidence, not just the evidence that has been tailored for the conventional food industry. It's actually having the reverse effect of what they were intending to accomplish by pouncing on this review as they did.

He holds degrees in Public Health and Environmental Science and is a professional speaker on topics such as disease prevention, environmental toxins and health policy. As people started to grow crops and keep animals, they could depend on the food they grew themselves and also make a little extra to supply people who did not grow their own food. Australia exports about half of what is produced, but this only equates to about one percent of the global food supply. There are different levels of consumers, but to keep it simple, we will focus on two: primary and secondary consumers. Worms are an example of a decomposer that eats the producer or consumer, while bacteria or fungi break them down. For a long time we have not only bought organic but also local chickens and other meats, so I DO KNOW where my food comes from. However, no one agency is responsible for all foods, and agencies may split responsibility for even the same food product. In that timeframe, Robert Kenner attempted to interview 50 of the largest food producers in America.
But that's not the message the mainstream so persistently portrays when it comes to organics. Today, most people (in the city and country) rely on farmers to grow and supply their food. Once this happens the nutrients go back in to the soil which helps to feed the plants and the cycle begins again.
If an animal is removed from the food chain through our actions, this impacts upon the group of animals that feed on that animal and so on.
You can grow your own, but if that isn’t an option for you, try to find local sources of meat, fruits and vegetables. Most of the corn Americans eat today comes not from the cob, but by way of food ingredients and additives in processed foods and meat from corn-fed livestock. In doing so, their stomachs cannot digest the corn, and their stomachs become breeding grounds for E.coli bacteria. The USDA is allowed to regulate what constitutes organic food and when your milk is past due, but it does not have the authority to shut down a meat plant if they are selling tainted meat. We did very simple things throughout our daily routine, encouraging them to make good food choices, and setting a good example has given them a very good foundation.
I love to show the kids that not all food comes from the grocery store and educating the kids about pasture raised animals versus ones raised on conventional farms. According to the sloppy researchers at Stanford University, organic food will not make you healthier and there is no discernible difference.
Washing beef in ammonia and chlorine to destroy these bacteria before they are sold to grocery stores.
I love to garden, decorate, be a little crafty, shop and just have fun with my family and friends. By taking the kids with you they can begin to understand growing seasons and how foods grow for a specific time, and then they are done so we enjoy them while they are in season.
