When I reviewed FoodSmart, I made a quip about how organic food might not be as good for you as you might think.
In the past year or two, certified organic sales have jumped around 30% to about $52 billion (2008 dollars) worldwide despite the fact that organic foods cost up to three times as much as those produced by conventional methods. The number one reason that I hear as to why to eat organic foods is that they have no pesticides or harmful compounds. Just this year, nearly half of the pesticides that are currently approved for use by organic farmers in Europe failed to pass the European Union’s safety evaluation that is required by law 5. That said, those who do eat organic can take to heart that many smaller farms use few to no pesticides, and overall, organic foods do usually contain lower levels of pesticides than conventional foods. Some people believe that by not using manufactured chemicals or genetically modified organisms, organic farming produces more nutritious food. Just recently, an independent research project in the UK systematically reviewed the 162 articles on organic versus non-organic crops published in peer-reviewed journals between 1958 and 2008 10.
So organics are not better for us and we can’t tell the difference between them and non-organic foods.
True, organic farming practices use less synthetic pesticides which have been universally found to be ecologically damaging. The unfortunate truth is that until organic farming can rival the production output of conventional farming, its ecological cost due to the need for space is devastating. What bothers me most, however, is that both sides on the organic debate spend millions in press and advertising to attack each other instead of looking for a resolution.
But I also firmly believe that increasing the chemicals used in agriculture to support insanely over-harvested monocultures will never lead to ecological improvement. As it stands now, to be honest, if you want to eat the healthiest food for you that has the least environmental impact, buy local produce. I am a bit on the fence with organic products precisely for the reasons outlined in your article. I will send by email my NZ media responses to aspects of the FSA nutritional attack on organics and also an example of pesticide residues in conventional produce. You need to learn how to spell, punctuate sentences correctly, and try using words that are ACTUAL words. As for the EU report, the reason I did not include it is that it’s not available yet.

It’s ridiculous to believe that food that is made in the laboratory and sprayed with toxin carcinogens is just as nutritious as real (not fake big corporation) organic foods. Thirdly the toxic chemicals sprayed on plants often cause cancer but again there’s a cover up. Another question that needs to be asked is why is the USA population so overweight and unhealthy. My work on this whole project has slowed significantly over the summer as I pursued an interesting opportunity of sorts with the Rodale Institute up in Pennsylvania and as I work towards a masters in nutritional biochemistry.  Both opportunities have opened a whole new series of doors that will only serve to strengthen this site going forward.

The London Telegraph, when not fabricating news to support England’s latest imperial adventures overseas, is at the forefront of many of the largest corporate-financier funded lobbying campaigns. When entire news cycles are dominated by headlines built on a single university study, with editorials attempting to hammer in big-agri talking points, a lobbying effort is clearly afoot.
This most recent anti-organic food campaign began with a Stanford study out of its Center for Health Policy (a subsidiary of Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies), examining the nutritional value of organic food versus non-organic. The Stanford study intentionally dismisses concerns regarding the presence of pesticides by simply claiming levels were within legal tolerances.
The Center for Health Policy is a subsidiary of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). Silver Spring, Maryland resident Sonia Marie Bunch always knew she’d invest in an organic food and beverage line—the only question was when.
Born out of the ’90s coffee house scene, organic coffee accounts for $21 billion of all coffee imported to North America, reports Research and Markets. A former NASDAQ market analyst, Bunch impressed the store’s executives by “knowing her product, her competitors her marketplace and her niche,” says James Sturgis, director of supplier diversity for Ahold USA.
Bunch jumped into the java business right as the economy tanked and wasn’t able to secure a bank loan. Bunch runs The EverGreen Home from her home office and spends about $5,000 annually on Website maintenance and trade shows where she promotes her coffee brand through lectures and home roasting demonstrations; her monthly in-store demos are free. Having operated in the red for nearly three years, Bunch expects revenues of $300,000 by year’s end, and projects revenues of $1 million in 2010 by expanding into an additional 380 Giant and Stop and Shop stores in New England.
While The EverGreen Home Coffee is also available at three Whole Foods Markets in Southwestern Maryland, the company also sells powdered Japanese-style green tea from it’s Internet storefront and has plans to sell Fair Trade honey, peanut butter, and hot cocoa. Man, your eyeballs can roll in your head when you see how much more organic foods cost, but it helps to know the reasons why organic produce costs more.
Some crops, like carrots and onions in particular, never really shade out the weeds …. Leafy green and leguminous crops are grown and then turned back into the soil for mulch and plant food. So, for example, instead of harvesting the whole carrot crop at once (which would ‘flood’ the organic market), the organic carrots are harvested fresh six days a week, with small amounts being sent very regularly to a wide range of outlets. A little soul-searching will inevitably lead to the realisation that the ones who profit from fruit and veg at the supermarket are not the growers, but the supermarkets themselves. For me, it’s Food Connect, which is not strictly organic, but is sourced from farms and smaller producers who grow sustainably.

If, as time wears on, we find that the pesticides used by modern agriculture are more dangerous than we think, then it may be a good thing that so many of us are eating Certified Organic.
Between 1990 and 2001, over 10,000 people fell ill due to foods contaminated with pathogens like E. However, science simply cannot find any evidence that organic foods are in any way healthier than non-organic ones – and scientists have been comparing the two for 50 years now. Organic farming does have many potential upsides, and may indeed be the better way to go in the long run, but it really depends on technology and what we discover and learn in the future. Organic supporters tend to vilify new technologies, while conventional supporters insist that chemicals and massive production monocultures are the only way to go.
Smaller farms, like the one owned by my boyfriend’s family, often use less pesticides and take better care of their land and crops.
What I have come to realize is that you must pick your battles based upon research and guidelines. It looks great, has what I consider some very useful information, eg who owns organics?, and I have not trawled particularly deeply but again your article while technically well written is not balanced or fair.
There’s a lot of spin being done by both sides, and in the end, it simply leaves the consumer not sure where they should buy their food. You take a jaded, negative approach to organic farming, and it’s clear you have spent little to no time actually working on both conventional and organic farms. Recently, someone has splurged, and splurged big on anti-organic food lobbying built atop a suspect Stanford study. Organic food is free of pesticides and genetic manipulation, both of which are proven to cause learning disabilities, decreased IQ, sterility, and a myriad of other health problems including a wide variety of cancers. Food with pesticides on it had nearly the same nutritional value, the study claims, as organic food – completely skipping over the whole point of eating organic. No discussion was made on whether legal tolerances equated to safe tolerances, nor was there any mention made of the harmful effects of genetically modified organisms (GMO) or other controversial food additives found in non-organic food products. So who are these “friends,” national and international foundations and corporations funding the research of FSI and its subsidiary, the Stanford Center for Health Policy? In February 2008, Bunch added an organic coffee to her roster of offerings under The EverGreen Home, then an organic bedding and green living consulting company. The 46-year-old borrowed about $30,000 from friends and family, and nearly lost her house in order to can her first few orders of USDA certified organic, fair trade brews.
The company also pays about $800 a year for memberships in the National Minority Supplier Diversity Council, the Organic Fair Trade Association and Green America.
Beverage buyer Keenan says it’s a big leap of faith for a grocer to take on a fledgling brand, but building a stronger brand in smaller store makes your brand more solid. Find a niche that puts such a big dent in a larger brand’s business that they want to buy you out just to get you off their back, says veteran diversity supplier manager Sturgis. Conventional farmers often get 2 or 3 crops per paddock each year by using synthetic fertilizers, where organic farmers rejuvenating their soil, will only get one. Some of these are too small to fork out for certification, so you’re getting chemical-free produce at a more reasonable price. If you switch one thing in your trolley to organic each week, then you won’t notice much difference at the checkout.
We eat less meat and more legumes, we cook more from scratch and I generally make do with my Food Connect box (medium veg) and maybe a kilo of potatoes.
Organic farming, just like other forms of agriculture, still uses pesticides and fungicides to prevent critters from destroying their crops. The local organic farms, he explained, spray their crops all the time with a variety of chemicals. GMOs have the potential to up crop yields, increase nutritious value, and generally improve farming practices while reducing synthetic chemical use – which is exactly what organic farming seeks to do.
Even the most ecologically responsible farms have to ship their products to grocery stores. My comments on pesticides, nutrition, and sustainability are based on extensive research, and that research is cited throughout so that you can see for yourself where the information came from. Without being able to read the report, it’s hard to judge exactly what the findings entail – for example, what exact methods were used to get their results? I would advise any readers to search further down this page for a post made by Roxanne, and you will find some actually useful information.
Which means to produce an equal amount of food, you need to take more area away from wildlife. It occurred to me that I was eating waaaay too much butter anyway, so now I have less, but better quality.

Of course, some conventional farms spray just as frequently, if not more so, and some organic farms use no pesticides whatsoever.
Further analysis of similar studies on livestock products like meat, dairy, and eggs also found few differences in nutritional content.
But what’s far more likely is that switches to organic farming will result in the creation of new farms via the destruction of untouched habitats. And in the small scale, particularly in areas where food surpluses already occur, organic farming could be beneficial. Just look at technological advances in creating biodegradable products; sometimes, we can use our knowledge and intelligence to create things that are both useful, cheap (enough) and ecologically responsible, as crazy as that idea may sound.
By buying foods produced locally instead, where we can talk to the growers and learn exactly what is in the food we’re buying, we can dramatically reduce the impact of agriculture on our environment and still get meals jam-packed with nutrition. The upside is that my quality of intake is higher and I can also manage weight and limit spending money on empty calorie foods.
GM plants are mainly engineered to withstand high levels of toxic pesticide application such as round up. Anything approved by today’s governments should be put up for review by a public oversight committee organized at the grassroots level of real organic farmers in no way influenced by the government. The costs of roasting and canning took an $82,000 chunk out of her profits from the delivery. It’s great for the environment and good to give people jobs, but it makes the produce a bit more expensive.
Find a butcher that does organic meat and ask for the cheaper cuts and make stews and stir-fries, then treat yourself to a big, marbled organic steak every now and then. As more research is done into their toxicity, however, this simply isn’t true, either. The same study also found Salmonella only in samples from organic farms, though at a low prevalence rate. And organic farming has another spacial price – by relying on natural fertilizers, it requires more land for the animals that produce those fertilizers.
You would improve your nutritional intake far more by eating a larger volume of fruits and vegetables than by eating organic ones instead of conventionally produced ones. Every government today should have a public oversight committee so the common people will always be informed about what the government is doing. Bunch’s beans are procured through brokers that work directly with farms in Indonesia, Ethiopia and South America. Slowly replaced sauces, mustards and other things in jars with organic versions from the supermarket. According to the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy, the top two organic fungicides, copper and sulfur, were used at a rate of 4 and 34 pounds per acre in 1971 [1]. The reason for the higher pathogen prevalence is likely due to the use of manure instead of artificial fertilizers. Talk to the person behind the crop stand, and actually ask them what their methods are if you want to be sure of what you’re eating. So if anything, the organic livestock products were found to be worse for us (though, to be fair, barely). If there is such a establishment set in place then they have to be reorganized and re-positioned for the right people to take over and keep watch for the public.
In contrast, the synthetic fungicides only required a rate of 1.6 lbs per acre, less than half the amount of the organic alternatives. Since the last ice age, nothing has been more disruptive to the planet’s ecosystem and its inhabitants than agriculture. The main thing is, know which vegetables to buy and if you have the option, go local and go organic. It’s not a literature review like the FSA, nor a comparison of dietary benefits (no attempt was made to determine if eating their organically grown food made people healthier, for example). These are then sold to Africa where the poor people have to pay in hard currency that they do not have and have to keep buying seeds every year rather than saving their seeds. Conventional farms often use manure, too, but they use irradiation and a full array of anti-microbial agents, and without those, organic foods run a higher risk of containing something that will make a person sick.
While I agree it would be nice to include it, again, I’d have to read exactly what they did to feel comfortable doing so. I vote for the public to speak up and take back the responsibility it has given away to the scheming politicians and start making your world a better place because the real power has always been the people.
