Boulder County's natural food companies are drawing heavy interest from investors, in part because recent sales have shown them selling for three, four and five times their valuations. Long considered a hub of the growing natural and organic food scene, the Boulder Valley is home not only to some of the country's premier brands but, increasingly, the industry's most innovative investment groups.
Together, they will funnel more than $200 million to emerging brands in hopes of growing them into multi-million dollar companies within the next two to five years, according to estimates provided by five local funds.
One of the first firms to specialize in natural foods locally was Greenmont Capital, founded by industry insiders in 2004. Greenmont's portfolio includes Door to Door Organics in Boulder and Longmont's Madhava Sweeteners.

Greenmont started with a single $20 million fund, and Boulder's Eco Products was its first investment. The fund is preparing to raise another round of funding with which to start hunting for new investment opportunities. Seven companies are in the portfolio now (three of which are in Boulder), and Spier said they hope to double that number over the next couple of years.
But now, they're looking to get in at the early stages to minimize their investment, knowing they can grow the brands quickly. In 2012, General Mills' acquisition of Food Should Taste Good carried a 3.6 multiple, Culberson said. Rumors abound of big name New York investment firms setting up shop in Boulder, and a few smaller players have already established a presence here. Vernon, formerly chief operating officer with Eco Products, said the fund's first food investment will be finalized in the next few months and that all the investments he will oversee will be in Colorado companies that fall under the company's active lifestyle platform. While Hammers said she questioned launching a company during an economic crisis, she moved forward and used the tough times to her advantage: touting her reusable bags as a good economical choice. In those efforts of keeping stride, exhibiting at Expo West -- trying her hand at landing more business -- is a logical choice for the next stage of eco-ditty, she said. The recession has been tough in a lot of ways for Ice Box Bakery's Bush, who said she's weathered the difficult times as a business owner and as a single mother. She raised some investment money through a "friends and family" round, hired a national sales manager and brought on brand developer Liz Myslik to further shape Ice Box Bakery's brand image. Industry slow-down The economic state during the past 18 months brought the high-flying and booming natural and organics industry back to earth. Organic products appear to have taken the biggest hit, said Patrick Rea, editor of the Boulder-based Nutrition Business Journal, citing his publication's initial data from the "tough" 2009. Organic products are "not doing well at all," with sales growing in the 5-percent-to-6-percent range, Rea said. Consumers, deciding not to pay a premium on some items, will "trade down" to private label products, or may opt to "trade out" of organics all together, he said.
Supplements, however, have been the best-performing sector of the industry, with indications of possibly double-digit sales growth, said New Hope's Linder. Consumers turned to immunity products as H1N1 fears climbed and other consumers -- perhaps those who lost health care because they were out of work -- turned to herbal supplements in efforts to provide self-care, Linder said. The cost was the deciding factor for some such as Organic Vintners and Eldorado Artesian Springs Inc. Bonetti and crew weighed the costs of attending: the $5,800 for the two-table booth, the hotel rooms, the flights, the shipping. But Organic Vintners could not rectify the costs that totaled to the $10,000 and $12,000 range. Instead, the company chose to have its wine featured at an organic wine and beer tasting event held at a neighboring hotel to the Anaheim Convention Center, he said. Making a go For some of the nearly 40 Boulder-area companies attending, the past few weeks have been hectic, to say the least, in preparing for the "must-attend" event. Evol Burritos is launching three new products at the show and plans to use the event as a way to showcase their "premium" frozen burritos, he said.
Others see the upcoming trade show as a way to solidify relationships and stabilize brand awareness for a potential rebound in the industry, said TJ McIntyre, general manager of the Boulder County-based Earth Balance division of spread company Smart Balance Inc.
