We were a little miffed when David and Vanida Bank closed their small but always-welcoming Amsterdam Avenue restaurant Recipe last year. The Banks also runs Land Thai Kitchen next door, which is another solid option up there on Amsterdam. We ate an early, pre-movie dinner at Cocina Economica last week, really liked most of what came out Chef Perez's kitchen, and appreciated the effort on the rest. Top 10 things we learned about Cantina Laredo: 1) It’s a Mexican restaurant located smack bang in between Covent Garden and Leicester Square tube stations – leading up to the Seven Dials area. An extensive drinks list is available, with wines selected by Richard Bampfield Master of Wines to match the fiery flavours, tempting cocktails, and of course, a range of over 30 of the world’s very best 100% blue agave tequilas.

Alright you may need ear plugs for this place, definitely not the place to go if conversation is on the agenda.
Originally opening in Jersey City Orale decided to take a swing in the big leagues, The Upper West Side.
The outdoor patio, welcoming atmosphere, and the uber cheap awesome food… win win win. With its comfortable, even slightly stylish room (for the Upper West Side anyway), and consistently good ingredient-driven food, Recipe had become one of our go-to neighborhood dinner spots.
The Cocina Economica menu has dishes you might expect from a Mexican restaurant (tacos, carne asada, ceviche, quesadillas) but there are also plenty of less-common items here which seem worth exploring. The Cocina Economica version are pretty standard issue, except instead of being served with a blue cheese dipping sauce, Chef Perez melts salty oaxaca cheese right onto the wings.
We take your privacy very seriously and will never share your details with third parties witout your consent. Cantina Laredo serves traditional and authentic dishes, concocted by Executive Chef, Reuban, who grew up in the Mexican ranches. 4) You must, must, MUST order the guacamole en molcajete which is freshly prepared at the table and served with tortilla crisps. Not so much the tortilla, which was just fine, but our chosen filling Beef Cheeks was first-rate: heavily seasoned, grilled to tender, chewy perfection.

As well seeing that the dip is fresh and not from a pre-made container, you find out just how easy it is to make guacamole yourself. 5) Skirt steak is from the diaphragm of the cow. The restaurant serve it grilled, adebo-marinated and wrapped around a fresh poblano pepper stuffed with prawns, mushrooms, onions and cheese. And yes, the steak is British sourced. 6) If you don’t like your margheritas to be messed with - ie flavoured - order The Purist.
It’s made with Casa Ambar Blanco tequila and served with salt all along the glass rim and a wedge of lime. Instead it’s gone for light wood panelling, sturdy and varnished tables and leather upholstered booths. If American Psycho were set in Mexico, Cantina Laredo would be the equivalent to Dorsia restaurant – although I’m sure staff are more obliging to book you a table. 8) For a night of dining out with friends, family and work colleagues in the heart of Central London, Cantina Laredo is the perfect choice. We recommend you try the pomegranate version. 10) Mexican brandy butter is better than our British Christmas version.
