The question of whether or not organic food is really actually better for you than conventional counterparts is for sure in the top 10 questions I’m asked most often.
Namely, pesticides, insecticides, added growth hormones and un-needed (and dangerous) antibiotics. If prioritizing a budget, always buy the items listed under the Dirty Dozen organic, and go conventional with the others.
And on a final note, I personally think that the reason some testing shows organic produce could have more nutrients than conventional is because the nutrient density of any plant depends on so many factors, like soil, season and farming methods (organic or not.) Organic blueberries grown in California in May might have slightly different nutrients content than organic blueberries grown in Oregon in June. The reality is the hood cleaning company is suppose to report this, then the restaurant owner gets a letter saying they have so many days to have the problem fixed or sometimes an inspector just shows up and sees the non compliance issue and they report it. With a large variety of produce options and the rise of health food brands, there are many veggies, fruits and meats vying for a spot in your meal management system. Organic foods have the benefit of being grown without synthetic pesticides, additives and fortifying agents. If you’re looking to include more produce in your meal management system, but are also concerned with keeping your food costs at a reasonable level, conventional produce is likely your best option. When it comes to nutritional value, the question, “is organic food better for you?” is no longer valid. You won’t contribute to polluting the environment with potentially dangerous pesticides.
My mom has put her blood, sweat and tears into running an organic avocado farm in Southern California so I’ve heard a lot about this debate on both sides.
There is growing evidence for the benefit of organic food, according to a previously skeptical doctor who says many agricultural pesticides are lethal to good bacteria in the bowel. This causes an imbalance that contributes to obesity and poor general health, says Dr Donohoe, who spoke at an AustralAsian Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine Conference in Melbourne on August 24. He says entire families can become obese if something in their environment disrupts their gut. Interestingly, Dr Donohoe is particularly concerned about the high rate of elective caesarean sections, which may leave babies with inadequate gut flora for years after birth, affecting their weight. As the baby grows, plenty of fresh organic fruit and vegetables in season and minimising grains is the key to a gut-healthy diet, he says. We can’t vouch for the veracity of Dr Donohoe’s line of thinking, but that all seems to make sense to us here at Bellamy’s Organic.

With terms like ‘organic’ and ‘all natural’ becoming more and more prominent, it’s difficult to tell whether organic foods are actually any better than traditionally grown and raised foods. Organic food is food that is grown or raised without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, antibiotics or hormones.
According to the National Institute of Health, a healthy diet should consist of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. The farmers who grow organic crops use different techniques to keep pests from bothering their crops. You’re going to have to read the labels on things and get used to reading the ingredients.

Free Range – This label technically means that the animals were able to roam outside, but the tricky part is knowing how much room they really got. No Hormones Added – When the label says this it means that the animals were not given anything to make it grown unnaturally. These two lists call out the most contaminated and cleanest produce available, even after it’s been washed. Antibiotics that are fed to animals also end up in your body and are a nightmare for your healthy gut bacteria, while growth hormones can make your fat cells grow (they are growth hormones, after all.) Having an organic-only rule then it comes to animal products is a personal choice, but I highly recommend it. Always remember, the more vibrant, colorful and flavorful produce will have the most amount of nutrients. The pesticides in regular produce cause harm to the environment, while organic farmers aim to reduce the amount of chemicals released. Since it costs much less to use pesticides than it does to tend to organic foods, conventional produce comes at a lower cost. There is no evidence that organic food is more nutritious than conventionally grown produce. If you’re looking to eat as cleanly as possible, packing your 6 Pack Bags with organic foods is your best option. And since she toils solely to provide families with fresh produce at farmer’s markets, I was very happy to read the following critique on the debate. My wife and patients have told me for 20 years that they feel better on an organic diet, but I have said there is no reason why they should. Organic foods do not contain pesticides and hormones, so healthy gut bacteria are not at risk.
Our pursuit will always be to provide pure food that nourishes the gentle tummies of the little ones in our lives. The downside is that those foods come with less nutrients and more chemicals that aren’t supposed to be there.
The pesticides and growth hormones are used to make the farming process easier so that more food can be produced at a lower cost. Most organic labels have a green and brown circle on them with the letters USDA, similar to the figure below. Sometimes the number of animals can be pretty high, so they still don’t have much room to move around. With all the choices and different labeling it can be hard to pick out the stuff that’s really better for you. Even if the nutrition content is similar, not ingesting all those chemicals and hormones is better for your body in the long run.
Unfortunately, there’s still some debate as to whether or not organic produce has more nutrients that conventional produce. It also prevents you from over-consuming unhealthy foods that you shouldn’t be having in the first place. This means that those looking to both implement a clean diet and help the environment might prefer organic products for the meals they will pack in their 6 Pack Bags.

Regular fruits and vegetables have the same vitamins, minerals and low amounts of fat as organic produce. If you are looking for produce that is nutritious and beneficial to your health, either organic or conventional produce will do. But, overall studies have found that organic foods are no more healthier than regularly grown and raised food nor do they have any additional health benefits. Studies have found that there is little to no nutritional difference between organically grown and non-organically grown food. Not only do organic foods taste better, but consumers support local businesses when bought at farmer markets. If you buy traditional meat the animal was most likely cooped up in a cage all its life and pumped with GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) and hormones to make it grow faster. Chickens who are cooped up and mass produced in a conveyor belt-like fashion will not produce the best meat or eggs. Next time you are out getting the food for your grocery list, take the time too look at labels and see what’s really in your food. Peeling helps, but remember that pesticides actually grow into the plant as well through the roots so simply peeling the produce might not remove all of the toxins. Even though most of Europe has banned GMOs, the loop hole is that the animals can be fed grain from GM crops.
However, equal nutritional value does not necessarily mean the items are grown or processed in an equally healthy way. In a 2012 systematic review done on over 200 studies between 1996 and 2009, it showed that there was little to no vitamin or nutrient difference between organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables.
In many cases, producing organic foods often also supports better farming practices and worker treatment. If you sat there and tasted a normal chicken breast and an organic chicken breast they would probably taste the same. Even the farmers who harvest the food benefit from not being around the chemicals and pesticides. Next time you go to the grocery store compare an organic chicken breast to a traditional chicken breast. Again, I still think that organic is better–even the healthiest produce can be ruined with toxic pesticide and insecticide residue. There was a notable difference between the use of pesticides in organic and non-organic foods.
But in most cases, organic food is more expensive and is harder to come across, especially in the colder months. Even meats showed little difference, both organic and traditional meat having similar risks of e coli.
