Among the three Hong Kong-listed fast food restaurant chains: Cafe de Coral, Fairwood Holdings Ltd and Tsui Wah Restaurant, it seems Tsui Wah has surged ahead by discovering the formula for success on the Chinese mainland, analysts say. Tsui Wah’s financial results for the six months ended Sept 30, 2013, largely, were in line with market expectations. Among Hong Kong fast food restaurant chains, those with better positioning on the mainland market are more likely to have the upper hand against the competition in the future, Kenny Tang Sing-hing, general manager at AMTD Financial Planning, told China Daily.
Tang said that from the analyst’s perspective he favors Tsui Wah over Cafe de Coral or Fairwood Holdings Ltd, because of Tsui Wah’s positioning and strategy on the mainland.
He points out Tsui Wah Restaurant brands itself as a Hong Kong-style cafe on the mainland, targeting a relatively higher end market; while Cafe de Coral and Fairwood are positioned as “fast food restaurants” targeting the mass market, the different strategy enables Tsui Wah to charge high prices for menu items. Tang said that although Cafe de Coral and Fairwood are highly popular in Hong Kong, their business prospects on the mainland are not “very exciting”.
Tsui Wah, by comparison with its higher priced menu, and lower rentals, was able to post a higher profit margin on the mainland than in Hong Kong.
Tsui Wah is also a 24-hour, 7 days a week operation, giving it a higher “table turnover rate”, Tang added.
The people are piled together too…no matter how fast you wish to walk through this thing, I can assure you that it will take much longer.

After reading the financial results and meeting with the management team, we feel that Tsui Wah has the potential to run a successful chain over the long term,” Mark Yuan, a research analyst at ICBC International, said in a report. The streets are more crowded, all the locals are hopping on planes to go elsewhere and Max and I are soaking up the beginning of the festivities! I was worried that it would be too crazy and it is really crazy here but I’m appreciating it! By the end of September, 2013, Tsui Wah owned 25 restaurants in Hong Kong, nine on the mainland, and one in Macao. A Credit Suisse report showed pre-tax profit at Tsui Wah’s mainland stores was 6 percentage points higher than the company’s Hong Kong outlets. I could spot their bubbly logo anywhere and was always fascinated by the use of the French de in the name.

My favorite snack was a thick piece of deep-fried french toast stuffed with peanut butter and drizzled with a honey-like syrup.
And of course washed down with a hot cup of lingmun cha (lemon tea).Chinese fast food cafes are so easy to find in Hong Kong, no matter how remote the village. But these places have nothing in common with the US chain, Panda Express, except that they all serve fast food.On a side note, back when my former in-laws from Hubei province lived with us for a year in San Francisco, we took them to a food court one day. My then-husband brought them around the stalls and when they saw rice at Panda Express, they figured they wouldn’t go hungry.
