Those who think that eating healthfully means spending big bucks and shopping at specialty stores and organic markets hasn't been to Costco lately.
The store stocks a wide selection of everything from pistachios to medjool dates at more affordable prices and much of it organic. Pumpkin, sunflower, chia, and flax seeds are all at a significant discount over mainstream markets. Quite a few items are available that pass my sniff test for better snacking, including Roasted Seaweed, Skinny Pop, Kind Bars, and Mary's Gone Crackers.
The produce section is packed with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, much of it organic.
The store sells Dave's Killer Bread, a top choice for whole grain sliced bread, along with a section devoted to local loaves, in my case, Acme bread. The selection isn't huge, but Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats and True Roots Quinoa, two quality brands, are among the offerings.
No shortage of choices for nut butters at Costco, including Brad's Organic Almond Butter, which has a bit of a cult following as I understand it. Both Foragers nut milks and Harmless Harvest coconut water are household favorites that I rarely buy because of the hefty price tag.
Canned wild sardines and wild salmon are two of the most convenient and affordable sources of healthful omega-3 rich fish available. Many brands of olive oil have come under fire for false advertising, labeling their products "extra-virgin" when indeed they are not. Name brand yogurts, including Fage, Noosa, and Chobani were among the offerings, as well as Bellweather Farm's DELICIOUS creme fraiche. Over the holidays, I noticed Epoisses on the shelves at Costco, a delicious, stinky, and expensive French cheese.
Organic beef and chicken and wild salmon, are among the offerings in the butcher section of the store. Organic maple syrup with a more reasonable price tag than the norm and also one of the better ways to sweeten things up on the home front. We have whole foods and new seasons which is local, between the two, an occasional trip to Costco and the farmers market that both stores host in their lot we do all our shopping. Previously I went to WF a lot but now my diet has changed a lot and my new town has TONS of local farmers.
Whole Foods does accept SNAP (food stamps) so I really do not think they are trying to keep poor people out of their stores.
Sadly, Whole Foods is just around the corner from my home and it can be way too tempting to pop over there and end up spending WAY too much.

A recent spin through the aisles turned up a surprising number of wholesome offerings, making a lot of good food accessible and affordable to a lot of folks. Everything is either organic or natural and they have recently rolled out a ton of products. Their produce can be high but they often have good one day sales and the variety can’t be beat. There are many regulations regarding what you can and cannot use WIC vouchers for, only specific brands are allowed.
Coconut water, banana, coconut milk, whey protein, chia, dates, muesli, honey immunity and vita booster and cinnamon. If you make EVERYTHING from scratch then it might not be worth it for you, but I have to cut corners sometimes and am glad to have those options to feed my family.
I also find they have best price on Bubbies pickles (the Publix down the street charges over $2 almost $3 more per bottle!!!). I buy regular organic eggs at Costco for baking, but for eating for breakfast, it’s got to be pastured eggs and right now, WF is my only source of good ones. They often have coupons and free trial samples too (omg I go so long between buying shampoo thanks to those things lol).
I love that the supplements are so pure- I never have to worry about mineral oil in any vitamins I get there. My old apartment was a mile from WF and loved that neighborhood (cheap older complex in very very UMC area- score!
