It was a chance invitation to set up a health food store in Newcastle West which first spurred Rosemarie Bennis into action. Employing four highly trained staff, Sonas offers a full and comprehensive range of organic wholefoods and beverages, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, homeopathy and eco friendly cleaning products. Health food specialist The Naked Deli is set to transform the former Post Office in Gosforth into a huge deli cafe and whole foods shop as part of expansion plans. Concertina doors will also open the shop out onto the main street, close to Gosforth Central Park. SMYTH’S Centra, Newcastle is getting into the swing of the Irish Open as it prepares for the world’s top golfers, media and golf fans to descend on the County Down town. The store, located close to the entrance of Royal County Down Golf Club which is hosting the Irish Open, has given some in-store offerings a golfing spin with a little help from caricature of our local golfing legends Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke. Customers can tee-off their day with Rory’s Fry Up, a five-piece breakfast with tea or coffee for only ?3 or fill up with G Mac’s Snacks, a ?3 sandwich deal for any made to order sandwich with a 500ml bottle of Coca Cola or River Rock Water and a packet of Tayto crisps.
Centra Newcastle also has a delicious range of ice-cream including Darren’s Double Choc, Rory’s Ripple, McDowell’s Mint Choc Chip, Westwood’s Whippy, Ricky’s Rum and Raisin, Harrington’s Honeycomb and Kaymer’s Karmel.

Centra Newcastle store owner, Hugh Smyth said: “The excitement is really building throughout Newcastle for the Irish Open and the council have done a great job getting the town ready for this event. Now nearly eight years on, Sonas is a thriving business and, a key shopping and reference point in West Limerick. Organic spelt bread is provided fresh daily, as are salad leaves in season and organic fruit and vegetables to order. Kirstie Kimmins first launched The Naked Deli in Heatona€™s Chillingham Road almost two years ago, with a mission to promote organic and non-processed food.
Heaton-based architects practice Richard Ruddick Architecture has been enlisted to work with the firm on converting the former shop into a deli bar. We also wanted to contribute in giving a special welcome to everyone coming into Newcastle from the world-class golfers, international media and of course the golf fans. We would be delighted to welcome any of the golfers into the store throughout the competition to wish them every success during their time in Newcastle,” he added.
Since then, the firma€™s wholesome juices, super food salads and sandwiches and raw vegan cakes have tempted in customers from across the city, many driving from miles around to snap up their freshly-made foods.

Last year the business expanded through a link-up with Fenwick, one of the regiona€™s best-known department stores, when it secured a deal to stock its range of food and drinks in the revamped Food Hall, a move which created three new jobs taking the workforce to 19. Ita€™s going to be everything we do at the Heaton shop but bigger and better a€“ we decided that if we were going to open in Gosforth we wanted to throw everything at it and do it properly.
Now the workforce will more than double with the creation of 20 new jobs, after taking on the empty post office unit in Gosforth Shopping Centre in a plan that involves an investment of more than £160,000.
As well as converting the entire double unit, creating room for a whole food shop and around 60 covers in a dining area, Kirstie and her team are turning the upstairs of the unit into a huge 2,000sq ft kitchen where preparation for Gosforth, Heaton and the Fenwick outlet will be carried out. Wea€™ve currently got three kitchens and have been using commercial kitchens, but wea€™re converting the upstairs of the unit into a big 2,000sqft kitchen where all the preparation can take place. Our plan to have an eat-in deli with a shop is something wea€™d love to roll out to other areas like Durham a€“ it all depends on how it works in Gosforth.a€? Is this the most hated junction on Tyneside?
