Green Isle Foods are investing €30m into their Irish operations and will create 115 jobs over the next 5 years. The frozen food aisles are an important area in any retail grocery store, but it is also an area that presents brands and retailers with a difficult challenge to engage with shoppers due to its very nature. Green Isle Foods and Tesco worked together on a project for the Tesco Naas store, with the objective of driving more shoppers down the frozen aisle and then once there, to engage them in the aisle for a longer period than normal.
By working closely with our retail partners and brands on some bespoke In-Store installations we are aiming to enhance the In-Store experience for shoppers, drive footfall, while simultaneously boosting overall category sales.

Welcoming the announcement by Minister Martin, Frank Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of Enterprise Ireland said Green Isle?s success to date can be attributed to a continual investment in capital, R&D, product innovation, brand development and customer service.


Managing Director of Green Isle Foods, Kieran Carolan, concludes: ?This is an ambitious expansion by Green Isle Foods and was secured against strong competition for investment within Northern Foods. I would personally like to thank our management and staff whose dedication and focus has ensured that this investment has taken place within Ireland and not overseas.
50 of the jobs are to be based in Longford in its pizza production facility and another 65 jobs are to be bases in Portumna, Co. It is, therefore, essential to recognize how shoppers are responding to this area in-store so that changes can be made if required. Operating in some of the most dynamic and fast moving categories of the food industry, the company is focused on providing customers with branded and own label products. Following extensive market research, Green Isle, with the assistance of an Enterprise Ireland Research Technology and Innovation (RTI) grant, committed R & D funding to investigate expanded pizza production and enhanced manufacturing processes.
The expansion copper-fastens Green Isle as the centre of excellence for pizza production in the Northern Foods Group. The company has a well established and highly innovative sales and marketing strategy, a factor which will be important in delivering the sales and exports arising from this expansion?. We wish to acknowledge the contributions of Enterprise Ireland and Kildare County Council in making this investment happen.
This fact should not be underestimated given the aggressive cost increases facing Irish based industries and the very challenging environment in which Irish companies operate. Ken Hughes of Glacier Consulting spoke at Visualises recent Shopper Marketing conference about how shoppers typically only spend between 25 to 35 seconds at a category (typically lower in frozen) and furthermore picking a product within a category segment may only take 2 to 3 seconds. Working with Irish International, Visualise implemented a complete overhaul of the frozen food category in Tesco Naas (see above images).


The development which is due to begin production in Autumn 2005, is supported by Enterprise Ireland and will lead to the creation of 130 new jobs from a current base at the Naas plant of approximately 630. That research commitment has led to a major expansion which will generate projected sales of ?35m and exports of ?23.5m over the next five years. I congratulate Enterprise Ireland for its role in securing this project for Ireland and Naas. This is an exciting development and we have every confidence in the continued growth of the business?. This bespoke installation improved product signposting within the category, while also adding an element of in-store theatre and warmth, to create a more enjoyable shopping experience, in a category which historically has poor dwell times. The challenge of winning new sales in highly competitive global markets cannot be underestimated.
The pizza production facility is state of the art technology and is evidence of the ambition and vision of Green Isle?s management and the dedication and commitment of its staff?. Growing productivity and controlling costs will be critical in achieving and sustaining the competitiveness needed to win such ambitious international sales?.
