Whole Foods Market announced earlier this year that they would require all foods sold in their stores with genetically modified ingredients to be properly labeled as such by 2018. Still, the story gave me a little laugh because in many ways, it’s a “prettier” version of the story that plays out in retailers each and every day. You have no reason not to make this salad for your next picnic, backyard BBQ, neighborhood party or quick lunch option.
Instead, I recommend that my clients and readers concentrate on eating complex carbs rather than simple carbs. Actually, the initial goal is to ensure all products with GMOs are labeled as such, but we can surmise what the next step might be. But, you have to admit, playing hard ball in the organic, non-GMO, free-range world seems more acceptable, right? Removing Chobani may open up the space for more of Whole Foods’ own store brands (making it less about GMOs and more about the Whole Foods bottom line). Chobani is currently the #1 Greek yogurt in the US and is not able to maintain present production levels using non-GMO milk.
Or, at the other end, may make room for niche yogurts with a higher price point (and perhaps customers with bigger wallets).
Whole Foods though is claiming the change is due its goal of partnering with suppliers who offer unique, innovative products such as new flavors and forms that customers may not be able to find elsewhere. Whatever the exact reason, it comes back to offering a product line-up that will maximize fiscal performance. I’m sure that fermenting the brown rice would change a portion of the flour to lactic acid, but not all of it.
