I've started writing (but not finished) a post on formulating a conservative approach to new issues. Each month, the global population grows by another 6 million, and an ever-wealthier world means one with more purchasing power, which drives up prices. I haven't entirely wrapped my head around it yet from a personal belief perspective yet, but I'm leaning in the direction of supporting genetically modified food, with caution. In a move that has as many implications for world trade as it does for agriculture, Egypt has banned the import and export of GMOs.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin is a soil bacterium that has been used as a pesticide spray for many years.
Despite fears over the health effects of genetically modified food, an analysis of nearly 900 studies found GM crops are safe. A 2015 Pew Research survey revealed that 57 percent of American adults think that genetically engineered foods are not safe. A study committee composed of experts in the field of ecology, genetics and crop health, however, have yet again showed that genetically modified crops are generally safe for humans and even the environment. A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine report on this analysis that looked at nearly 900 studies and disease data revealed there has been no increase in health risks related to the consumption of genetically modified food.
The report, which was released on Tuesday, did not also find evidence of environmental problems that can be attributed to genetically modified crops albeit it noted that pesticide resistance increasingly becomes a problem.
Some weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate, the herbicide that most genetically engineered crops were engineered to be resistant. Advocacies have pushed for the mandatory labeling of genetically modified food, but results of the report suggest that this move is not necessary.
Despite the result of the analysis that show no evidence of health effects from current use of GM products, the study committee's chair, Fred Gould, from North Carolina State University, pointed out the importance of continued scrutiny over the possibilities of "subtle" effects emerging later.

Currently, with the global population at 7 billion and change, more than a billion of those go to bed hungry, and another billion suffer from malnutrition.
Genetically modified foods are nothing if not controversial, and that controversy spans the globe. That means that none can come in -- meaning they can't import from any countries growing GMO foods they want -- and none can leave -- meaning they can't grow any GMOs, either.
Most of the soy and corn -- two of the most frequently modified foods -- that enter Japan is carefully sourced explicitly as "non-GM," using expensive traceability schemes, but that doesn't cover all of their bases.
When insects bite into the plant, the poison they ingest splits open their stomach, killing them. Crops that were engineered to resist bugs, for instance, reduce incidence of insecticide poisoning, and those that were altered to produce more vitamin A can cut cases of blindness and death caused by vitamin A deficiency.
At a press conference, report committee member Michael Rodemeyer said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the authority to mandate such labeling without the evidence of the health impacts from GM crops. Some companies such as General Mills and Campbell Soup already start to label products that were made with genetically manipulated ingredients. This sets in motion a complex agripolitical dance involving many countries where agriculture is a big part of foreign trade. For example, "A non-GMO policy would not cause difficulties for sunflower oil but it would for soyoil," according to one European trader.
Unfortunately, the FDA does not require that food labels state the presence or amount of genetically altered food in a manufacturer's product.
2010 was the first year when more people lived in urban rather than rural environments; by 2050, we're going to need 30 percent more food and 40 percent more water than is currently available. Fish and Wildlife shouldn't have allowed genetically modified crops on a national wildlife refuge. Resistant insects will then proceed to destroy crops as they did before, but now no pesticide will be effective, and we're back to square one.The biotechnology companies that engineered these crop seeds claim that the pesticide has a history of safe use since Bt bacteria spray has been used by organic farmers for natural insect control.

You may be surprised to find that most of the processed foods you eat, including sodas, soups, crackers, and condiments, contain genetically engineered ingredients. However, because Japan imports GM canola from Canada, GM contamination has already occurred and it is spreading to a much greater degree than one could imagine. That may not sound like much, but, thanks to the ruling, 37 farming contracts -- many being used for GMO soybean and corn crops -- have been canceled. Will it lead to more widespread action?
The difference, however, between the Bt toxin produced by GM plants and natural Bt spray is that the Bt toxin in the GM plants is thousands of times more concentrated than natural Bt spray, is designed to be more toxic, has properties of an allergen, and unlike the spray, cannot be washed off. Though the toxins are supposed to be destroyed in the gut, studies have found this not to be always the case. So, essentially, we end up consuming these "harmless" toxins, the full effects of which are not yet known. These recommendations include an upgrade to a threshold of 0.1 percent for genetically modified material in plant products and animal feed, and a minimum distance between apiaries and fields where GM crops are grown (though that distance was not specified).
In South Africa, the government gave permission to proceed with trials of genetically modified sorghum, with the blessing of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and DuPont, among other supporters. The justification is that, while it is one of the few crops that grows well in arid regions, it lacks most essential nutrients and it has poor protein digestibility; modifying it allows more nutrients to be "put" back in.
