If you’re looking to learn more about the vegetable growing and no dig gardening then I have a range of courses available, both taught in person at Homeacres and on my trips around the UK, or online as part of my in-depth guide which allows you to learn at your own pace. Learn about growing all kinds of vegetables and many fruits too, productively, healthily and with less effort.
Both Day Courses and Weekend Courses are available and they cover many topics, or if you have specific requirements we can create your own bespoke course itinerary. My events calendar has complete listings of all my scheduled courses at Homeacres and elsewhere. Lamport Gardening Academy was started in 2012 to allow keen gardeners to improve their skills and knowledge and learn some new techniques too! Tutors are well qualified in the field and groups are kept small so that you receive plenty of attention. We run RHS courses at Lamport for keen amateur gardeners eager to learn more about their hobby. If you are looking for a gardening holiday in Scotland or a gardening weekend break, easily accessible from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling or Perth you can have fun, relax and learn new skills.
A welcome coffee, tea and homemade shortbread are served from 9:30 and you can wander around the garden or chat with your host before the start at 10 am. Our one day courses are practical and hands-on; time is spent out in the garden and in the polytunnel.
Our aim is to work with small groups and communicate our passion for plants and gardening and give you the knowledge to go home and get results. Here at Cwm Harry we have long been aware of the need for efficient resource use and this has led to the development of both the food waste composting initiative as well as the Zero Waste project, which aims to look at the whole waste stream for opportunities to reduce and reuse. So it seems like a natural development for us to be interested n community growing, especially on under-used plots of land around the urban fringe. So it was this in mind that we decided to develop and run a special community garden design course later this month to help develop a fully thought out design for our new garden on the Coleg Powys campus in Newtown.

We have developed a community garden blog for the Get-Growing project for all our project news etc, we also have  Facebook Group for anyone keen to support the project. Inspired by Food Surplus heroes FareShare, Cwm Harry have set up the Shrewsbury Food Hub that uses volunteer power to to get surplus food to local community organisations, so they can make their budgets go further.
Presteigne and Norton still trailblazing Zero Waste Residents of Presteigne and Norton slimmed their bins by 60% thanks to their community-based Zero Waste Service, and still have slim bins more than a year after the service finished. Basic wildlife gardening techniques such as creating shelter and food for wildlife in your garden such as garden birds etc. Creating a plan for your wildlife garden using the best plants and features to suit your location and your gardens needs.
Pest and diseases how to control them by using organic methods and creating a natural balance in your garden to keep them under control.
Home course for a day in your own garden for you and you and your friends for up to 12 people.
One to three day residental gardening courses held in our main UK garden 5 miles North of Dorchester, Dorset see our gardening course facebook page for more details costing £150 per person per day including bed and breakfast plus lunch for you and your non gardening partner.
This 6-module home study course provides an in-depth introduction to the design and theory of healing and therapeutic gardens. Includes all study material, course book, The Healing Garden: a practical guide by Sue Minter. In the videos I explain the beautiful simplicity of growing without digging, using mulches and how this reduces weed growth. They also provide a foundation for further learning and training in the field of horticulture.
Two courses focus on vegetable growing and healthy eating; one on plant propagation and one on the creation of a beautiful garden. We provide a delicious lunch of home made soup, home grown salads and home baked bread supplemented by other local produce.

If the sun is shining, most of the day will be outside; if it’s wet, more time will be spent inside but bring a coat anyway! We have been able to construct a productive garden on the the back lot of the Cwm Harry plant on the Vastre estate over the last three years, using compost from local food waste and lots of recycled and reclaimed materials. Firstly we saw developing the new site as an opportunity for all concerned to gain some experience and insight, and we also saw it as a chance to involve some local people in the garden sites design with the intention of building strong local links around the new community garden. The course lasts for a day and takes you through all the basics you need to know to get you own wildlife garden started . Discounts available for single people attending our resdidental gardening course and two people both attending one of our residental courses sharing a room.
It explores the design of therapeutic outdoor space to enhance emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. I show an example of how we make one bed in a morning, using compost on top of weeds, then we plant it straightaway. The garden itself was designed by a group of permaculture design students as part of their studies, and they generated a garden design which generated the maximum diversity for both trainee and volunteer growers as well as for wildlife and biodiversity.
Emma Maxwell, brings her perspective as an organic grower and market gardener with many years teaching basic and advanced horticulture courses, while Steve Jones brings a wider permaculture and sustainability perceptive to the course.
It should prove to be a very interesting and useful, information packed course which we hope will be a catalyst for the new garden’s development as well as helping us develop a training course that we believe should be very useful in the future as a tool for any community looking to develop a stronger local food economy and to play an active role in community development.
