About The Gardener's Arms and The Garden RestaurantWe use cookies to enable you to book and track jobs and purchase products. Widely known for our great vegetarian food and relaxed atmosphere , having become free of tie at last in 2012 we have now expanded our range of well kept traditional British ales and have the pleasure of being able to bring you the finest brews that local independent breweries have to offer.
We also have a great selection of vegan friendly wines which we have delivered by the best local supplier who travels far and wide to seek out the finest wines to import and gives us regular expert recommendations on which varieties to stock.
Our range of bottled ciders, soft drinks and beers are carefully chosen to give variety and great taste to those looking for something different from the traditional real ale and our premium lagers also reflect our ethos that the products we supply are of the best quality.
The Gardeners Arms also boasts the only grass lawn beer garden in town great for relaxing and eating in on balmy summer evenings or long lazy weekend afternoons. We play hosts to regular poetry nights and music events as well as our famous weekly quiz all of which help us maintain our position as a hub of the community as well as a great destination pub for travellers from further afield.
The pub supports two charities and the landlord (despite swearing never again after each one) regularly runs marathons to raise money via sponsorship from locals. Becoming free of tie and becoming leaseholders recently has given us the ability to make improvements to the pub and give our customers more of what they deserve, central heating, a wider choice of drinks, a redesigned and beautiful garden and better furniture are all additions that were made possible by finally acquiring the reins and we plan more improvements so we can keep offering visitors a great dining and drinking experience. The original Gatekeepers Cottage of the Montebello Estate was opened as the Gardener’s Cottage Restaurant by the Barty family in 1993.

An outdoors pop-up restaurant in Scotland doesn’t sound like the best idea ever,  but it is. For the main attraction there was smoked haddock and poached eggs on a bed of wilted spinach.
Having eaten my full, and topped up on coffee, I shouldered my tote and went off to forage for dinner. If you continue to use this site we will assume you are happy to comply with our cookie policy. The building  has stood empty for a long time is being refurbished before Dale and Edward can move in. We started with a delicious pretzel from Falko Konditormeister (where Edward was head chef). I like pretzels. Between the two, they have 15 years of experience and have worked in a number of well-known restaurants: The Kitchin, the Atrium, Blue, Cafe St Honore and The Outsider. I’ve only had pretzels with mustard or cheese before but can tell you that they go wonderfully with farmhouse butter and strawberry jam too.

The sun shone on the castle cliff and serious shoppers were arriving in droves as we took our seats. While they wait for the restoration to be finished, their practicing their skills and cooking in pop-up restaurants at the Castle Terrace Farmers’ Market, and, at the end of the May, at the Hopetoun Farm Shop. I went on my own but chatted with my fellow diners and watched the chefs cook our food on a hotplate. We loved the fresh tastes including a wonderful pea and lovage cold soup and gorgeous crispy toasts with variou toppings. The smoky flavour of the haddock was enhanced by the little wafts of smoke that came from the smoking lunch. Based on what I’ve seen and tasted so far, I really look forward to visiting the restaurant when it opens.
