In response to the statement “there is such a thing as an ethnic or national food”, I have decided to qualify it, because there is such thing as an ethnic food or a food special to a certain culture.
However, over time it is a possibility that the recipe could become changed from its original. I believe that you could respond in many different ways to this question.  It all depends on who you are, what you believe in, or even your culture. The statement says: “There is such a thing as an ethnic or national food.” Is there really such a thing as an ethnic or national food?
This evidence from the reading proves how there is no ethnic food(s) to a specific country or culture. This statement is very contradictory, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is incorrect and it is to be challenged. After the creation of many dishes that are world renounced and with the new ability to eat foods from across the world, one question remains. This dish, unique to Mexico, combines foods found all over the world with a technique used in Europe since the Middle Ages.
What do you think?  Is it the ingredients, the chef, or the location what makes a dish ethnic?  Feel free to leave your perspective in the comments section! On the flip side, the mass migrations of people in the second half of the 2nd millennium caused foods and the recipes that came with them to become ethnically blurred. Where the stalls in the bazaar originally only stocked spices and herbs, over the years other edibles were added, such as nuts, honeycomb, Turkish delight, dried fruit and vegetables, mature hard Turkish cheese, caviar, and smoked or dried beef.
Say that an indigenous group of people have an ancient recipe that they have known for as long as one could remember.
But still, wouldn’t that food originally belong to the indigenous people that created it?
I also believe that even though there is no such thing as a National food, there are foods that most people from a certain Nationality or Ethnic group prefer. Other people may have different viewpoints, but in my opinion I challenge this statement to say no.
Since other cultures like the Europeans had created the ethnic food(s) with their own unique resources, other cultures in this case Argentina, adopted them as their own dishes. However when you read the article you see that it is possible to agree with this statement; although not entirely. I believe that a food is the ethnic food of a group of people when it was the people that made the dish. On one hand there is the fact that Christopher Columbus came to the Americas and brought along cows, horses, pigs and sheep; along with a variety of vegetables (Civitello, 123).
There are some cases of a group of people like the early Pueblo peoples of the American Southwest. In China, however, this serves less as a sweet treat and more as a savory snack for Dunkin’ customers.
This burger looks very interesting and is actually good to taste but once again proves the extent to which fast foodies can go in their bid to create marketable fast food items.
All around the world there are millions of places to buy and sell food; it is a culture in and of itself! Afterward, the purchased fish is either loaded onto trucks to be shipped to the next destination or on small carts and moved to the many shops inside the market. The shopkeepers stock all the staple flavors of Eastern cuisine and display them with a great sense of color and arrangement.
Today a fair amount of the over 90 shops unfortunately swapped their spices and offer the typical tourist trinkets such as scarves, kids costumes, and gold.
However, over time it could possibly become changed ever so slightly to a persons taste or liking.
However, some foods are commonly found throughout some countries and are associated with them.
Also, it might not matter what ingredients you are using to prepare food, but as long as it’s different it could be defined as “ethnic”.
When I think of National foods I think of foods that are mostly only in that one ethnic group now in days, it has become more difficult to tell where the food has come from, because there is so much trade and when people are receiving the food a lot of the time they put different twists on it and call it their own, that’s why I believe that there are more like regional foods. The reading thoroughly depicts how the Europeans came to colonize the Americas, and how they brought along with them different types of foods that when combined together, created various dishes which are now main dishes of those countries or cultures (Civitello 128-129). The food does not all necessarily have to be from the same place or even from the place that the people originated.
All of these things integrated themselves into the diets of the Native Americans already living in the Americas.
How can something be an ethnic or a national food if its playing ping pong with many cultures? These people lived in a more remote and inhospitable climate that kept them separated from the Spaniards who were integrating with the other tribes of the Southwest (126).
A large amount of the population was made up of people from Portugal and Africa, thus, these people added their own flare to the food. Just because one food is influenced by another, the people who made the original food can say “they based that off of our food” and thus, claim that the new food is really their food. It is seasoned with salt, spices and vinegar and is considered as an excellent protein source. The tongue and cheek are considered as the best fragments but the eyeballs are always left out. The eggs of chicken, quail, or duck are preserved in clay, ashes, salt for years close to a century until the insides of the egg decompose to form a greenish gel.
This dish is however facing controversies from several animal rights activists for the obvious cruelty towards bears before butchering and cooking them. People having this dish believe they will withstand the powers and strengths of the cobra which is why they just swig it in whole alive. Unless a customer prefers to tote around a long stream of shopping carts, he needs to make sure his pocket is full of change. Once the cashier tallies up your purchases, it is up to you to make sure you have something to store it in. The Spice Bazaar was built in 1664 as an extension of the New Mosque (Yeni Camii) complex, and its revenues helped support the upkeep of the mosque and its philanthropic institutions such as a school, a hospital and several baths. Cardamom, green cumin, ground red pepper, curry, sesame, ground coconut, yellow turmeric and saffron fill bags and boxes and are heaped into miniature volcanoes, while strings of dried okra, peppers and eggplant dangle overhead.
No matter how it is changed or spread along throughout time, it still was created by the original chefs, and that shouldn’t be forgotten. I don’t know one food that is only found in one area, and because of the trade and overlapping in foods it makes it very hard to find a district cultural food for any ethnicity. From 1520 to 1595, were the years the Native Americans were conquered by the Europeans (Civitello 121).
These resources are not from the Americas, they were introduced by the Europeans, which proves the idea of there being no ethnic food for any type of country or culture. As long as it was created by the people, and it is something that they are known for or a dish that is special to them, I would consider it an ethnic food. The opposite side could say “we added our own twist to it, so it is our food” and claim the new food as something entirely different. It was iconic in Poland in the 19th Century and was served to an unsuccessful suitor to tell him his advances were not wanted!
They consumers claim that this torture in fact releases certain toxins in the hormones which give it the ‘delightful’ taste!
It is an expensive dish and is always saved for festivals and special occasions in Iceland. We walk into a grocery store, meander through the aisles, pick up what we need, and then check it out at the front of the store.
The auction houses then estimate the value and prepare the incoming products for the auctions. In case of large fish, for example tuna and swordfish, cutting and preparation is elaborate. This procedure is quite common throughout Europe in big grocery chains; it is quite effective in ensuring their carts are not stolen!
The market was called M?s?r Çars?s? (Egyptian Market) because it is said that it was built with money paid as duty on Egyptian imports.
On the other hand, if a non-indigenous folk found out the recipe and modified it, it would no longer be ethnic, but would just be a food.

This is why i chose to qualify, because this is such a controversial topic with no clear answers.
I would also argue that different Ethnicity use food from another Ethnicity’s to make it fit their liking, by using other cultures foods to make something else, it automatically not their own idea, therefore, I don’t believe that they can call it there ethnic food. In the time span of this seventy five years, Native Americans were heavily affected by the diseases, animals, and especially diverse foods the Europeans had introduced into their environment, which led up to multiple cultures adopting their unique foods. Although the dish or food might not stay only in the ethnic group that it originated from, because it originated from that ethnic group, it would still be their ethnic food.
During the time of the colonization of the Americas, there was a lot of passing back and forth of the crops and animals that lived in either America or Europe.
For example Flan is a Spanish and French dish, but the Spaniards don’t put a filling in theirs like the French do. The forced integration of wine and grapes into the Peruvian culture eventually resulted in them being incorporated into local cuisine when King Philip II put restrictions on wine exports to protect the vineyards in Spain (127). However, the combination of ingredients today is regarded as “Mexican Food” and not “Spanish Food”. The idea of a “national food” can often vary from person to person, region to region, taste to taste. Sure, there are numerous different options for our food shopping such as farmer’s markets and the like, but for the most part our system follows this order.
The buyers (licensed to participate in the auctions) also inspect the fish to estimate which fish they would like to bid for and at which price. Frozen tuna and swordfish are often cut with large band saws, and fresh tuna is carved with extremely long knives (some well over a meter in length) called oroshi-hocho, maguro-bocho, or hancho-hocho. There are all kinds of interesting beauty products as well, such henna, natural sponges, a large variety of oils and rose water, and the exfoliating hand-woven kese, which are used in Turkish baths for scrubbing.
But then again, that same group of indigenous people would still consider that food their recipe, and it would still be their ethnic food.
As demonstrated on page 124, “one of the most important changes was that the diet if South African natives went from heavily vegetarian and very low fat to heavily meat-based and high fat… tortillas now came in wheat as well as corn”. During the thousands of years before the Spaniards came and stirred up the American Southwest, each individual tribe, like the Pueblos had their own foods that were distinct to their tribe. With fewer amounts of wine being exported to Spain and other parts of the world, the grapes and wines stayed in the possession of the landowners and the natives who worked the farms.
Cheese is often made after a considerable fermentation involving several bacteria, but in this case it is more of decomposition than any fermentation at all.
As anyone who has traveled abroad for any length of time knows, not all shopping systems match what we find here at home. This goes to display that because of what different people have taste for, they change recipes and make them very different from what they were.
This type of delicious food would not have been possible if the Europeans did not settle and conquer the Americas.
Cultures like France, Spain, and England do trading all the time with wine and beer because some are better than others and some have more advantages in the things they can grow because of the climate. This surplus of a new food created a new mixture of two types of food that developed on completely separate continents. Moreover, the food is named after the new location, as in the example of Mexican food and the Argentinian empanadas.
In the example above, it shows how corn, which originated from one Ethnicity and was changed to fit another Ethnicities likings.
The thick dough that makes up the shell of the empanada is made out of wheat and lard, while inside there is usually meat and other vegetables like onions and peppers. For example the tomatoes were brought to Italy and the Italians changed all of their ethnic foods to center around tomatoes. Also just because a food originates from one place or another doesn’t mean its ethnic to that specific place because most of the time the things inside the food do not originate from the same place.
This mixture of foods from multiple ethnicities from around the world makes the dishes and recipes that develop from them of no one ethnicity. Regardless of how tasty this is, eating cheese with wriggling worms is definitely something that needs to be learned! These bidders include intermediate wholesalers who operate stalls in the marketplace and other licensed buyers who are agents for restaurants, food processing companies, and large retailers. Now, I clearly believe that in some Nationalities and Ethnicities there are indeed people that prefer different flavors, but I don’t believe that there are certain foods that only one culture can have, although surely there are certain places that it is easier to grow certain foods because of the differences in climate and region, not as much as your Ethnic group. The text uses empanadas as an example of a non ethnic food because the empanada contains wheat and lard which came form the New World and now Mexico. In this sense, thousands of years ago, pure ethnic foods existed and were fairly common but as people began to explore and began trading with each other, the ethnic foods gave way to of multi-ethnic food that is now the dominant type of food around the world. As stated above, the most important reason explaining why it is not fair to call mostly any food an Ethnic food is because most things are made from other foods from different cultures, therefore there are no ethnic groups that can call any food there ethnic dish. The meaning of something being a national food is that it is completely belonging to one specific country, race, or culture. So that in turn causes the ethnic food to change and vary as time passes, so that shows that there is no set ethnic or national food.
