In 2013, Food Sentry added more than 3,400 verified instances of food safety violations associated with products exported from 117 different countries. The incidents in the dataset addressed raw or minimally processed foods, including seafood, vegetables, fruits, spices, dairy, meats, grains, and nuts and seeds. Food Sentry also analyzed the source of the problems and found that more than a third of them were due to “excessive or illegal pesticide contamination.” The next main causes of food safety problems were pathogen contamination and excessive filth or insanitary conditions. Special new coatings being investigated by researchers are more resistant to bacteria and other microbes than food-contact surfaces used today, according to a report on a recent symposium hosted by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). The coatings may be commercially available in the next few years and will need to withstand some pretty tough treatment. Besides the food safety applications, such coatings can also help reduce the massive amount of food waste that occurs from spoilage. Goddard noted that other areas of food processing plants that might benefit from these coating include door knobs and HVAC vents and drains, which can harbor microorganisms. These are three of several varieties of three brands of flour recalled by General Mills in relation to a multi-state outbreak of E. No one has died, but 13 victims have required hospitalization and one has developed the serious complication hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure that is often fatal.
In response General Mills expanded its recall — already at 30 million pounds — to include two more months of production from its Kansas City, MO, plant. The recall still includes only three main brands of flour, Gold Medal, Signature Kitchens and Wondra. The General Mills plant in Kansas City, MO, is just northeast of the heart of the city’s downtown area. The news release from the Minneapolis-based food giant reminds consumers about their responsibilities for food safety in their homes. In addition to packaging and distributing the flour for consumers and restaurants, General Mills also sold bulk lots of it to undisclosed corporate trading partners that have used it to produce other foods.
The Betty Crocker cake mixes and products from other companies are under recall because they contain the recalled flour. The company also warns that “flour is made from wheat that is grown outdoors where bacteria are often present and the normal flour milling process does not remove these bacteria. Previously announced recalled flour production dates ranged from November 4, 2015 through December 4, 2015. More extensive testing during the weekend proved the town water in Hugo, CO, does not contain any THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, as was reported by public officials last week.
A shed covering a town wellhead was broken into, but the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department has not been able to determine when the break-in occurred and does not know who did it.
Hugo residents were warned going into the weekend not to drink the town’s water because some tests showed the presence of THC in the water.
Hugo, a town of 730, is located 110 miles southeast of Denver on the state’s Eastern Plains.
Tests kits that reported false positives are being returned to the manufacturer to determine why they were defective. While recreational marijuana has been legal in Colorado for more than two years, Hugo has not approved any licensing, which is done at the local level. During the Thursday to Saturday period covered by the water warning, bottled water was trucked into the community.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in its Thursday post on its Facebook page that the Hugo Public Works staff notified it of the test results showing THC in the water supply. A team from Alaska’s Division of Public Health traveled to the town of Bethel last week to investigate a cluster of Salmonella illnesses reported there.
Louisa Castrodale, a state epidemiologist, told KYUK Public Media the cluster of sick people confirmed with Salmonella infections amount to an unexplained situation that raises public health concerns. Three people from the state’s health department arrived Wednesday in the town of about 6,300 people in the south central area of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Officials are encouraging anyone on the Bethel area who has had Salmonella infections symptoms recently to see a doctor.
Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach ache, vomiting, fever, headache and dehydration, especially in infants and older people. Seafood importers must also have a written guarantee from foreign processors that the imported fish or fishery product is processed in accordance with U.S. The observations were detailed on a form later issued to the company by the agency, the February letter pointed out. Inspectors also noted failure to clean and sanitize utensils and equipment to protect against contamination of food and food-contact surfaces, as required by law. Additional problems included lack soap at hand-washing stations and no protective covers on lighting fixtures suspended over exposed food. Recipients of FDA warning letters have 15 working days from receipt to respond with details of the procedures they have taken, or will take, to correct the current violations and prevent them from recurring. As Americans prepare for the second week of pre-empted prime time programming tonight with the beginning of the Democratic National Convention today in Philadelphia, there’s one thing that liberals and conservatives agree about — food safety. One statistic that was not reported along party lines was the survey respondents’ overall confidence in the food supply. Also, a majority of the survey respondents, 53 percent, believe that modern agriculture produces safe foods. Liberals more frequently cited pesticides as a top food safety issue, 38 percent compared with 24 percent of conservatives.
Conservatives cited carcinogens or cancer-causing chemicals in food twice as often as liberals, 40 percent vs. Somewhat liberal respondents were twice as likely as somewhat conservative respondents to cite food additives and ingredients as a top food safety concern, 12 percent vs.
More than half of liberals, 51 percent, reported reading an article examining the food system in the past year, while less than a third, 31 percent, of conservatives did. Liberals more than conservatives cited the government as a top source of trusted information on the safety of food and ingredients, 58 percent vs. Many of the survey results were not reported in terms of liberal or conservative views, but rather as combined numbers for both groups.
With foodborne illnesses as the top food safety concern at 57 percent overall, the second and third concerns overall were chemicals at 50 percent and pesticides at 48 percent. Public awareness of common foodborne illnesses is high, though it dropped in comparison to previous years. Nine out of 10 respondents this year said they have heard of Salmonella as a problem in food, and seven in 10 have heard of E. The survey also showed that people have more faith in the safety of food if it comes from sources close to home. Consumers are also taking responsibility for their share of food safety, with 83 percent reporting washing their hands with soap and water and 74 percent reporting washing cutting boards with soap and water.
Four out of 10 respondents said they would be more likely to use a food thermometer if the recipes and cookbooks they used listed proper cooking temperatures in the directions. Sitting in my hotel room on the shores of Waikiki in the remnants of tropical storm Darby, has given me time – perhaps too much – to think about this outbreak – especially after meeting with a few of the families.
The Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) is investigating a cluster of 74 hepatitis A infections on Oahu. HDOH staff are conducting interviews with the cases in an effort to identify the source of infection. All of the cases are residents of Oahu with the exception of two individuals who now live on the islands of Hawaii and Maui, but were on Oahu during their exposure periods.
On the 74 sickened, one was an employee of a Taco Bell on Oahu and one was an employee of a Baskin-Robbins on Oahu.
Be cooperative – hepatitis A illnesses can last two to six months and victims are certainly not feeling their best, but their cooperation is vital. Focus on where you have been eating and drinking in the two to six weeks prior to becoming ill – at home or out. Review your credit and debit card purchases as well as any accounts you have at grocery stores or restaurants. Ask friends, co-workers or family what they might recall that you did during that same time.
With the help of the 74 – hopefully, not more – HDOH will solve this mystery and stop the spread of this potentially deadly virus.


Bittman’s “foodiness” scale rates foods on a scale of one to five with five being the best for consumers. We applaud this evolution of messaging and it is noteworthy since only a few months ago OTA was still engaging in tactics designed to scare consumers away from conventionally grown foods. An example of this marketing against tactic was a social media post that warned consumers if they served a popular and healthy produce item for dinner they would consume seven probable carcinogens, 12 suspected hormone disrupters, seven neurotoxins and six developmental or reproductive toxins.
Interestingly, Ken Cook of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which is one of the main culprits of promoting negative and disparaging messaging about conventionally-grown produce, was in attendance at the Organic Produce Summit and heard both Batcha’s and Bittman’s presentations. For decades, EWG has released a “dirty dozen” list which makes inaccurate and unscientific claims about pesticide residues on the most popular fruits and veggies. Since 2010, the AFF has worked to counter erroneous claims from groups like EWG and provide science-based information to consumers about the safety of all produce. Over those years, AFF has also repeatedly asked Cook and EWG to stop calling healthy and safe fruits and veggies “dirty,” “toxic laden” and “contaminated” because of potential negative impact on consumers and produce consumption.
For now, the AFF welcomes the end of disparaging messaging and OTA joining with the produce industry in promoting positive messaging that can help increase consumption of produce overall.  This message evolution is good for consumers and it’s the right thing to do. Finally, we applaud the organizers of the Organic Produce Summit for bringing these influential speakers together for a meaningful and thought-provoking discussion. His UV light oven, which is about the size of a microwave oven, will combine UV light with stirred-up water to reduce Salmonella and other bacteria and viruses that can contaminate fresh produce. Chen, who is a professor of food science in UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has developed the technology and is currently working with the university’s Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships to patent and commercialize it.
He said the UV oven will be easy to use and could also have applications in restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and commercial kitchens. After using samples of lettuce, spinach, tomato, blueberry and strawberry in the two scenarios, Chen found that the UV light oven decontaminated the fresh produce much more effectively than washing it with plain tap water.
The professor said that the UV oven method will not heat fresh produce and will not have a negative effect on its sensory properties. Another recall spurred by metal fragments in sugar from an unnamed supplier was issued Friday evening, this time for 30 bakery products sold by Weis Markets. The Weis recall includes muffins, cookies, shortbread and bread products distributed to the Pennsylvania-based retailer’s stores.
Similar to the Weis recall, ConAgra Foods did not name the sugar supplier earlier this month when it recalled more than 195,000 pounds of P.F. ConAgra discovered the problem with metal fragments on July 1 when an employee at its Russellville, AR, facility observed metal fragments while dispensing sugar from a supplier for sauce formulation during processing. Both the Weis and ConAgra recall notices said the fragments range in size between 2 and 9 millimeters (mm) in diameter.
The Weis recall notice warns that the metal fragments may be in the sugar toppings used on its muffins and other baked goods. A Colorado company is recalling more than 4,500 pounds of “Wild Boar Brotwurst” products because of excessive levels of nitrites.
Consumers can identify the recalled products by label information including establishment number “EST.

Health officials said in the notice that people are not at risk as long as they strictly follow food safety best practices when handling and cooking ground beef. Being first to make recreational marijuana legal has meant Colorado is an experiment, but nobody saw this one coming.
Hugo, CO, a town of about 730 people, located 110 miles from Denver on the Eastern Plaints has reported its municipal water has tested posiive for THC, marijuana’s main psychoactive ingredient. But Hugo water is being reported as containing so much THC that town residents are being warned not even to let their pets drink it. The town decided to test its water after a Hugo company doing drug screening was coming up with wildly different results. Lincoln County officials conducted ten field tests, using two different types of test kits, on the town’s water and six came back positive. The Hugo well has been sealed and secured, but officials said it will take time for water to flush through the lines. Prosecuting attorneys from the local 18th Judicial District, FBI, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation have been called in. The Lincoln County Public Heath Department says the public should avoid the town’s water for at least the next 48 hours and report any unusual effects to the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center. Hugo Mayor Tom Lee says there hasn’t been the kind of acrimonious debate over marijuana in the town as there has been in other Colorado communities.
Close to 200 victims of the Salmonella serotype Tennessee outbreak that ended in early 2007 are in line for restitution when ConAgra Grocery Products Co. Credit for finding so many documented victims of a nearly decade-old outbreak goes to federal Judge W.
ConAgra owns the Sylvester, GA, peanut processing plant that late in 2006 and early 2007 was associated with the 44-state outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee that sickened at least 425 people. On May 20, 2015, the government charged ConAgra with one misdemeanor count of violating the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The parties expect to complete the review and provide an assessment of the materials no later than July 29. The agreement does not include any probationary period for the company, largely because it has been operating the Sylvester, GA, peanut butter plant for almost a decade since the outbreak without problems. Multiple failures are believed to have contributed to the contamination of Peter Pan and Great Value branded peanut butter. Peanut butter from different manufacturers became poisoned three times between 2006 and 2012. The outbreak involving Peter Pan and Great Value, both made in the Sylvester, GA, plant, was first in 2006-07. Two years later, peanut butter and peanut paste made by the now-defunct Peanut Corporation of America at nearby Blakely, GA, was blamed for the Salmonella serotype Typhimurium outbreak that sickened 714 people in 46 states.
The now-closed Portales peanut processing plant was purchased out of the Sunland bankruptcy for $26 million in March of 2014 and then resold to Ready Roast a year later.

Agricultural ministers meeting in Brussels this week agreed that criminal activity stretching across the European continent is behind the horsemeat scandal.   In response, they’ve called for still more DNA testing of the continent’s meat and meat products. The accompanying infographic provided by the Australian Food Safety Institute shows the breadth and depth of the European horsemeat scandal. The scandal went public January 15 when the Food Safety Authority of Ireland announced that pig and horse DNA had been found in products purportedly made from beef.
IKEA’S Swedish meatballs, which are supposed to contain only beef and pork, were found to contain horsemeat in tests conducted by the Czech Republic. Shortly after the Irish DNA tests were announced, fresh beef sold by several of Europe’s major supermarket chains was found to contain horsemeat. Testing has pulled more countries and more brands into the growing scandal.  Countries now involved are as far flung as Romania and Sweden. Three people were arrested in the United Kingdom in mid-February, but its not likely that those suspects have total awareness of the Europe-wide horsemeat conspiracy. Fresh beef labeling has been more stringent in Europe since Britain and France both experience outbreaks of Mad Cow disease. Whenever a mislabeled product is recalled for containing horsemeat, food manufacturers say food safety is not at issue.  However, there’s not much evidence that those involved in food fraud are much concerned about food safety. What the food manufacturers are trying to say is that mistaking horsemeat for beef should not make you sick, so long as it was not a race horse treated with the painkiller known as phenylbutazone, or “bute.”  So far, little if any of that has turned up in testing done by the Europeans.

The presentation, which was part of an annual conference for farmers in Western Washington, focused on the wonders of a new type of potato dubbed the NewLeaf Potato. Halterman said the advantage of using Bt in genetically modified crops is that the farmers don’t have to use sprayers or tractors to apply the protein because it’s already in the plant, which saves time and fuel. A recent article by Halterman on the history of the biotech potato offers some interesting history, including details on the environment that ultimately led to its removal from the market.
The presentation opened our eyes to the fact that other “agricultural wonders” were waiting beyond the horizon. Going one step further, crops such as corn and soybeans could be genetically engineered to resist glyphosate — think RoundUp herbicide from Monsanto. Oh, and there was the “fish tomato,” which never did get past the research stage, but which, nevertheless, is still being used as an example of genetic engineering. After the presentation, still dazzled by what I had learned, I walked down the hall to the coffee break room. Several years later, I attended an international conference about biotechnology in Seattle. When I gently warned him that yes, we have the freedom of speech in this country, but that it’s tempered by the stipulation that it’s not to incite violence, he told me with all of the fervent idealism of a young person that he was willing to die to stop this new “very dangerous” science.

On the legal front, the two sides — activists and “big ag” — will continue the battle in federal court, in Congress and state-by-state.
As for the voters, they rejected mandatory GMO labeling in four Western states — among them heavyweights California and Washington. While the company’s officials say they’re optimistic that a federal solution can be found in a reasonable amount of time, they are prepared to label all of Campbell’s U.S products for the presence of GMOs regardless whether government mandates it.
At the same time, the company says it continues to recognize that “GMOs are safe, as the science indicates that foods derived from crops using genetically modified seeds are not nutritionally different from other foods.” The company has a list of GMO ingredients on its website. Campbell is a good example of how food companies have changed the way they talk about their products to consumers.
