Each year the School Food Service (SFS) Departmenta€™s Nutrition Educators research current statistics and trends. For the most effective nutrition education, material must be age-appropriate and tailored to the audience's learning capabilities. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) at the University of Rhode Island has provided free nutrition education to limited-resource individuals and families in the state since 1968. Participants in the EFNEP program receive nutrition-related knowledge and skills to help better manage resources, secure adequate nutrition, and enjoy better health.
EFNEP is delivered as a series of six or more lessons by trained nutrition educators well versed in the community they serve.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a USDA funded program that provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to children in participating elementary schools throughout the school day. Be Active!" is a nutrition curriculum where students examine the key nutrients provided by each of the five food groups of MyPlate and learn how to make healthy choices.
Students from kindergarten through eighth grade are given the tools to plant and care for a garden. This yummy curriculum introduces the importance of eating from all five food groups using the MyPlate icon and a variety of handsa€“on activities. Children at this age are assuming more responsibility for their own health and well-being. Nine lessons are designed to teach children and their families about nutrition by relating each lesson to a garden activity.


Children in the school setting receive activity-based learning experiences to positively influence both their own and their family’s food choices. A balanced diet that supplies key nutrients at recommended levels promotes normal growth and development, facilitates academic and physical performance, and helps to prevent chronic disease, thus reducing healthcare costs.
Total enrollment of all schools selected in the state must result in a per-student allocation of $50 to $75. Research tells us that the early years are especially important for establishing habits that will last a lifetime.
The lessons actively engage the children in learning about healthy choices for food and fitness. These activities include everything from procuring one or more local items for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and other child nutrition programs to school gardens to local food tastings and more! Encouraging healthy eating and ample physical activity during the preschool years will have long-term benefits. The most common outlets are: nutrition education lessons created for school and community audiences, nutrition messages strategically included on monthly breakfast and lunch menus, and the Districta€™s website which also contains a variety of resources for students, parents, and teachers.
