Yes, I agree that serving whole, unprocessed and brown foods are more conducive to health, but I disagree with the alarmist notion that serving babies white rice cereal will ruin them for life.
White or brown rice, if it comes from a box, it will start to set up taste buds to prefer processed food. Instead, let’s focus on the patterns that will develop just a year or two later and for the rest of childhood. You can feed you infant organic whole grain super food, but if you eat burger and pizza everyday, it will be for nothing.
It seems to me that if a family is eating healthy, taking a fork and mashing a bit of whatever everyone else is eating is a much better plan. If it comes from grass fed animals being raised appropriately, raw milk is far and above better than pastuerized milk.
In fact, looking at the first stages of solid food feeding as a no-pressure introduction may help everyone. The American Academy of Pediatrics says 6 months is the minimum age to start solids, even if baby shows an interest earlier. But current consensus is that really any baby-friendly food is fine to start with, as long as it is mashed and easy to swallow (and not sugary, spicy, or salty). And a combination of jarred and homemade is a nice compromise (you can reuse the jars to store your own homemade baby food!).

There is so much more information now for parents, than when I had our son…years ago. My studies in Chinese medicine have led me to believe that starting with the right foods can eliminate the potential for allergies and other health issues later on. Also babies do not have much memory here and there is ample time to lay the ground work for heathier foods. They are kind of a source of some B vitamins, but nothing so steller as to crowd other foods off the table. I found, my boys loved sweet potatoes and avocados and pears and I do think early foods do lay the groundwork for later eating.
I started both my kids off with white rice cereal, but by 7 months had abandoned grains altogether in favor of more nutrient dense foods like pureed spinach, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, green peas, and some fruits, plus pureed meats. I try to offer whole meals that are grain free and I am always on the lookout for grain free snacks. Vegetables and fruits are best first foods to offer, then branching out into non-allergenic grains as the digestive system develops. After all, breastmilk is variable and moms in countries with highly seasoned foods don’t likely shield their children from them. Because my kids don’t eat alot, and any pretzels and crackers and bread and goldfish and cheerios and other grainy nonsense fill their tummies so much I can’t get anything else in! So then kids are getting less protein, brain building healthy fat and fewer nutrient dense veggies.
