The Environmental Working Group has a handy printable to help you keep track of their recommendations!
A few things you should know about me: I'm a wife and mother of 6, as well as a full-time work-at-home mom, a passionate entrepreneur, a homeschooler, and an INTJ, with a heavy emphasis on the introvert! We do our best as a family to buy organic foods, but sometimes it’s not entirely possible for lots of different reasons. Avoiding chemical residues such as pesticides is one of the main reasons why many of us choose organic foods. The items on the Dirty Dozen™ list contain the most pesticide residues, while the Clean Fifteen™ items contain the least. Although corn is not on the Dirty Dozen™ list, EWG advises to choose organic because some corn sold for human consumption is produced with genetically modified (GMO) seeds.

The Environmental Working Group just released its 2015 update to the annual Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, which includes the latest version of its popular “Dirty Dozen” list, the 12 fruits and vegetables that were found to contain the most pesticide residues. First off, EWG found that consumers are often ingesting pesticides with their conventionally-grown produce. The data analyzed comes from tests done by the USDA, in which produce is washed and peeled to mimic what a consumer would do before it’s tested. These simple lists are meant to make it easy for you to pull a card out of your wallet or open the app on your iPhone and decide whether spending an extra dollar on an organic avocado is worth it to you.
Lunder says this year’s list is pretty consistent with previous years, but we put together a few need-to-know facts about some of the worst offenders, here.
No argument from me about eschewing pesticide-laden food, whatever level, but why does Well and Good think sweetcorn, with a genetically modified variety in the grocery stores since last summer, and papaya, all genetically modified in US grocery stores, get a pass as “clean”?

It doesn't take anything more than common sense to know that consuming pesticides isn't good for your body. I'll definitely look for organic options on the dirty dozen, and will print out a copy for my husband, too! The expanded “Plus” section of the list did not meet traditional Dirty Dozen™ criteria but were commonly contaminated with pesticides exceptionally toxic to the nervous system (source.) It’s even important to reference these lists when buying cooked or packaged items because they can contain the same pesticide residues that the produce contained before it was processed. The EWG has put together a list of 51 popular fruits and vegetables that have been tested for pesticide residues by the U.S. This website is a guide to help you make informed decisions, but should never replace medical advice from licensed professionals. After EWG compiles the data, analysts classify the 48 popular fruits and veggies into the 12 that contained the most pesticide residues—The Dirty Dozen—and the 15 that contained the least—The Clean 15. Apples are kind of the worst. If there’s one fruit you should buy organic, it’s these crispy favorites.
Peaches and nectarines got dirtier. These summertime fruits have been on the list for a few years in a row, but “they moved up to the second and third spots on the Dirty Dozen list this year,” Lunder says. When you go grocery shopping, remember to read the labels and make sure there are no added sugars! The EPA website says: "Pesticides can cause health problems, such as birth defects, nerve damage, cancer, and other effects that might occur over a long period of time. The "clean 15" is a list of foods that have little or no traces of pesticides and are safe to eat in the non-organic form. And yes, I know a dozen is 12…but this year they added 2 more items that have large amounts of pesticide exposure, yet they still wanted to keep that catchy name. I am still figuring out ways to add more organic produce into our kitchen without breaking the budget.

Belonging to a CSA program at our local farm, growing our own vegetable garden and shopping at the farmer’s market are three major things we do that help make it possible for us to buy local, organic produce, dairy products and meat.
I refer to the Dirty Dozen list and only buy non-organic foods that are low in pesticide residue or I simply avoid them and buy something else to eat. Suddenly skipping the conventional strawberry sale  and buying the more expensive organic ones doesn’t seem so hard. Last year, one report showed that 80 percent of apples sold in the United States were contaminated with a chemical called diphenylamine (DPA), and it doesn’t look like it’s improved much.
Kale and collard greens did not meet the criteria but were added to what EWG calls the “Dirty Dozen Plus” list because they were found to contain trace levels of insecticides that are “highly toxic to the human nervous system.” So if you blend your own green smoothie every day, pack spinach salads for lunch, and sautee kale every night, you might want to look for the USDA organic seal. When we start a new and healthy lifestyle that includes clean eating, grocery shopping can be stressful. I live in a city with fresh vendors on every other corner so fruits and vegetables are plentiful, but unfortunately all of their offerings are conventional, not organic. Look for the label “USDA organic certified.” Other genetically modified crops that can be found in the produce section of the store are zucchini, papaya and sweet corn. It’s probably because DPA is deliberately applied “to prevent the skins of apples from developing brown or black patches,” explains Lunder in this article. I sometimes see adults and children pick a piece of unwashed fruit and pop it in their mouths, obviously oblivious to the pesticide residues they are ingestng. I don’t buy all these things every single visit, but this is an sample grocery list of items we like to have in the kitchen.

I had an awesome birth experience and plan to share it all via video ASAP, but in short, I went in at 39 weeks and 4 days to be induced and SO glad we did it this way for several reasons that I will explain later but basically, he was ready, my doc recommended it and he had the cord around his neck twice (we didn't know at the time) but his HR kept dropping during induction and we couldn't figure out why.


I had a great induction experience, got an epidural at 5cm and progressed to 9-10cm very quickly! I was shocked when they came in and said, the doctor was ready for me to start pushing ?? I honestly pushed for maybe 30 minutes at most and it was a stress-free and beautiful experience! Baby Theo came out with eyes wide open and perfectly healthy at 7.7lbs and 20.5 inches long!
I had very minor tearing that needed 1-2 stitches ??We started the induction with Cervidil at 8pm Tuesday night and I was on IV fluids and other things from then until Thursday morning. And when you buy fresh produce it is still not perfect like in American stores some insects still get to it.
So, I'm still so incredibly swollen from all those fluids ?? I am shocked with this post-labor edema, but I am feeling great! And you still need wash it well as manure is used to fertilize more than safe chemicals here. The swelling should go away over the next week or so and my uterus will continue to shrink back down and heal over the next 8 weeks. I've been walking a couple times a day outside quite a bit and my lady parts are almost completely healed! It just felt sore to stand up and walk too much the first few days but pain meds helped with that! I stopped taking pain meds today because I just hate how they make me feel and being awake to feed + Percoset + narcolepsy = horrible combo lol.
My back is still pretty sore from pushing and my butt, but I am shocked how good I actually feel!I totally attribute the quick and easy labor and healing to continuing to workout and eat well during my pregnancy! Honestly I told so many people after labor and pushing that I have no idea how women do that without keeping up some sort of physical fitness.
My doc said "they don't - they PUSH for hours instead of minutes" - so ladies --- THAT is a good reason to do those workouts and keep up as much as you can! I'm so thankful for that and and "easy" labor experience that I wouldn't have done any differently! My pushes were so strong from that muscle memory and strength that she actually made me do half pushes at the end because he was coming too fast from my pushes and they weren't ready for him yet ?? They expected an hour or so of pushing! So fresh pork that night and chickens kept on a string in the front yard for the next day’s meal. I knew it would help so much after labor for recovery to keep it all up and that's perform to be true! Even though I could have easily gotten discouraged from doing all the right things and still gaining 60lbs regardless?? I KNEW it was important not to let that get me down and continue to eat well and move my body for myself and baby Theo!Even just towards the end of pregnancy and during everything, the docs and nurses always commented on how I could roll myself over still and lift myself up without help.
Also, you HAVE to be realistic and never compare your postpartum journey to someone else's!
My body just did whatever it needed to, to make a healthy baby and now I can focus a little more on my health and fitness goals!So, for me, my only plan is to focus on ME and what I can control and taking care of my new family, including MYSELF as the #1 priority because if I'm not healthy and doing well, no one else, including Theo is. Because I had such a smooth labor and I'm healing so well, I'm cleared to workout at 4 weeks ?? but I am going to be taking it super easy and focus is on nutrition! I plan to walk daily and stretch for 4 weeks and then start with the new Country Heat workout coming out this week!! Sounds weird but until then, I'm going to set some stretching goals for flexibility over the next 4 weeks ?? Gives me something to focus on and it's great for us ??I started back to my normal pre-pregnancy meal plan and added 500 calories and so far milk supply is superb and overactive lol but I will adjust if I see some dips ?? I also think my Shakeology has a lot to do with my over-abundant supply and so far Theo's belly is tolerating it!! Also focusing on lactation-friendly foods in my meal plan as well so I can keep supply up and pump in case my supply drops. It's wild how much better I want to eat post-pregnancy knowing I need to eat as good as I can to keep supply up and baby happy ?? but even if I wasn't breastfeeding etc - just the importance of keeping me healthy and energized.
Oh and DO NOT weigh yourself for a few weeks or even a month post-baby ?? Just trust me??Actually - I suggest not weighing yourself at all.
I love everything about being Theodore's mommy and the smile won't be subsiding anytime soon ????Each day I'm shocked at how my "healing" is taking place!
